The crystal engineering of radiation-sensitive diacetylene cocrystals and salts

Fine-Tuning X-Ray Sensitivity in Organic-Inorganic Hybrids via an Unprecedented Mixed-Ligand Strategy

Crystalline organic-inorganic hybrids, which exhibit colorimetric responses to ionizing radiation, have recently been recognized as promising alternatives to conventional X-ray dosimeters. However, X-ray-responsive organic-inorganic hybrids are scarce and the strategy to fine-tune their detection sensitivity remains elusive. Herein, an unprecedented mixed-ligand strategy is reported to modulate the X-ray detection efficacy of organic-inorganic hybrids. Deliberately blending the stimuli-responsive terpyridine carboxylate ligand (tpc- ) and the auxiliary pba- group with different ratios gives rise to two OD thorium-bearing clusters (Th-102 and Th-103) and a 1D coordination polymer (Th-104). Notably, distinct X-ray sensitivity is evident as a function of molar ratio of the tpc- ligand, following the trend of Th-102 > Th-103 > Th-104. Moreover, Th-102, which is exclusively built from the tpc- ligands with the highest degree of π-π interactions, exhibits the most sensitive radiochromic and fluorochromic responses toward X-ray with the lowest detection limit of 1.5 mGy. The study anticipates that this mixed-ligand strategy will be a versatile approach to tune the X-ray sensing efficacy of organic-inorganic hybrids.

Leveraging Crystalline and Amorphous States of a Metal-Organic Complex for Transformation of the Photosalient Effect and Positive-Negative Photochromism

Uncovering differences between crystalline and amorphous states in molecular solids would both promote the understanding of their structure-property relationships, as well as inform development of multi-functional materials based on the same compound. Herein, for the first time, we report an approach to leverage crystalline and amorphous states of a zero-dimensional metal-organic complex, which exhibited negative and positive photochromism, due to the competitive chemical routes between photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals. Furthermore, different polymorphs lead to the on/off toggling of photo-burst movement (photosalient effect), indicating the controllable light-mechanical conversion. Three demos were further constructed to support their application in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. This work provides the proof-of-concept of a state- and polymorph-dependent photochemical route, paving an effective way for the design of new dynamically responsive systems.

Controlling Thermal Expansion in Supramolecular Halogen-Bonded Mixed Cocrystals through Synthetic Feed and Dynamic Motion

Control over thermal expansion (TE) behaviors in solid materials is often accomplished by modifying the molecules or intermolecular interactions within the solid. Here, we use a mixed cocrystal approach and incorporate molecules with similar chemical structures, but distinct functionalities. Development of mixed cocrystals is at a nascent stage, and here we describe the first mixed cocrystals sustained by one-dimensional halogen bonds. Within each mixed cocrystal, the halogen-bond donor is fixed, while the halogen-bond acceptor site contains two molecules in a variable ratio. X-ray diffraction demonstrates isostructurality across the series, and SEM-EDS shows equal distribution of heavy atoms and similar atomic compositions across all mixed cocrystals. The acceptor molecules differ in their ability to undergo dynamic motion in the solid state. The synthetic equivalents of motion capable and incapable molecules were systematically varied to yield direct tunabililty in TE behavior.

Crystal Structures of Lignocellulosic Furfuryl Biobased Polydiacetylenes with Hydrogen-Bond Networks: Influencing the Direction of Solid-State Polymerization through Modification of the Spacer Length

We present the topochemical polymerization of two lignocellulosic biobased diacetylenes (DAs) that only differ by an alkyl spacer length of 1 methylene (n = 1) or 3 methylene units (n = 3) between the diyne and carbamate functionalities. Their crystalline molecular organizations have the distinctive feature of being suitable for polymerization in two potential directions, either parallel or skewed to the hydrogen-bonded (HB) network. However, single-crystal structures of the final polydiacetylenes (PDAs) demonstrate that the resulting orientation of the conjugated backbones is different for these two derivatives, which lead to HB supramolecular polymer networks (2D nanosheets) for n = 1 and to independent linear PDA chains with intramolecular HBs for n = 3. Thus, spacer length modification can be considered a new strategy to influence the molecular orientation of conjugated polymer chains, which is crucial for developing the next generation of materials with optimal mechanical and optoelectronic properties. Calculations were performed on model oligodiacetylenes to evaluate the cooperativity effect of HBs in the different crystalline supramolecular packing motifs and the energy profile related to the torsion of the conjugated backbone of a PDA chain (i.e., its ability to adopt planar or helical conformations).

Role of water in the crystal structure of LiPCDA monomer and the radiotherapy dose response of EBT-3 film

Purpose

Radiochromic material used in recent commercial films has been suggested as a candidate for in vivo dosimetry because of its dose sensitivity, real‐time response, and atomic composition. It was observed that its sensitive material, lithium pentacosa‐10,12‐diynoate (LiPCDA), can have two distinct forms, with main absorbance peaks at ∼635 and ∼674 nm. The spectrum of the latter is similar to that of pentacosa‐10,12‐diynoic acid (PCDA) used in the commercial predecessor, obtained through desiccation of the commercial film. Water was suggested to be a part of the crystal structure and thus its presence or absence would affect dosimetric parameters. The objective of this study is to: (a) investigate how desiccated commercial films compared to the native form in terms of macroscopic crystal structure, dose–response, signal linearity, and post‐exposure kinetics; (b) demonstrate proof‐of‐concept that the two versions can be combined into one optical dosimeter and measured simultaneously.

Methods

Commercial radiochromic film, EBT‐3, was desiccated for 10 days at 45°C. Using a 6 MV LINAC beam and standard setup of 100 Source to Axis Distance (SAD), 10 cm × 10 cm field size, and 1.5 cm depth, commercial and desiccated films were irradiated to 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 cGy and the latter to 4000, 5000, and 7000 cGy. A custom phantom equipped with optical fibers for real‐time read‐out was used for all measurements. Absorbance spectra were collected at ∼1 Hz before, during, and after irradiation. Data were collected for ∼1 h after the end of irradiation for 200 cGy experiments. The radiation‐induced change in optical density (∆OD) was calculated with a 10 nm band around the primary absorbance peak. The post‐exposure percent optical density change was calculated and compared to ∆OD at the end of irradiation. Both commercial and desiccated films were also irradiated and measured simultaneously as proof‐of‐concept for using two materials within one optical path. For electron microscopy imaging, active materials from commercial and desiccated films were imaged on a scanning electron microscope at an accelerating voltage of 10 kV.

Results

Scanning electron microscope images showed that desiccated film was similar in topographical structure to the commercial EBT‐3 form. It maintained a non‐linear ∆OD with dose but resulted in ∼1/3 signal compared to the commercial film. Evaluation of post‐exposure response showed significantly lower percent increase in ∆OD for desiccated film initially, with no statistically significant difference at 1 h after the end of irradiation. Combining both films and simultaneously measuring their absorbance illustrated that the two absorbance peaks were identifiable and resolvable to allow for an independent determination of dose from each.

Conclusions

Water is implicated in the crystal structure of the EBT‐3 radiochromic film, with its removal through desiccation affecting both dosimetric and spectroscopic characteristics of the material. The two forms of radiochromic material (with and without water) are spectrally resolvable allowing for independent dose determination from each, opening up possibilities for dose measurements at different locations along a single fiber.

Synthesis and Properties of Aromatic-Terminated Diacetylene Organogelators and Their Application to Photopatterning of Polydiacetylenes

A series of simply structured diacetylene-diamide-based gelators (DAGs) with aromatic terminals were synthesized, and their gelation and subsequent photopolymerization abilities were analyzed. DAGs with an adequate spacer length (n) and tolyl terminals (DA-Tn) interacted with aromatic solvents, such as benzene and xylenes, at elevated temperatures. During the subsequent cooling process, the DAGs interacted with each other through CH-π interactions at their terminal positions. They also formed one-dimensional hydrogen bonding arrays through secondary amides, leading to stable organogels. These gels polymerized into π-conjugated polydiacetylenes (PDAs) under ultraviolet irradiation. In the p-xylene gels of DA-Tn, the spacer length exerted characteristic odd-even effects on the photopolymerization rates over a certain range (n = 3-6), which can be explained by periodic changes in the uniformity of the molecular packing modes. When the gelling solvent was changed to cyclohexane, the gelation and photopolymerization abilities were greatly improved because the DA-Tn gel networks became highly crystallized and transparent to ultraviolet light (254 nm). The ultimate conversion to PDA from DA-T8/cyclohexane gels was 45.2 wt %. Applying photolithographic techniques to the DAG with excellent photopolymerizability in the film state, we successfully fabricated microscale photopatterns of PDA. We also established a convenient removal process (development process) of DA monomers in unexposed areas. The resulting PDA patterns were quite stable to ambient light stimuli.

Dynamic Manipulating Space-Resolved Persistent Luminescence in Core-Shell MOFs Heterostructures via Reversible Photochromism

Photo-controllable persistent luminescence at the single crystal level can be achieved by the integration of long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and photochromism within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the first time. Moreover, the multiblock core-shell heterojunctions have been prepared utilizing the isostructural MOFs through an epitaxial growth process, in which the shell exhibits bright yellow afterglow emission that gradually disappears upon further irradiation, but the core does not show such property. Benefitting from combined persistent luminescence and photochromic behavior, a multiple encryption demo can be facilely designed based on the dynamic manipulating RTP via reversible photochromism. This work not only develops new types of dynamically photo-controllable afterglow switch, but also provides a method to obtain MOFs-based optical heterojunctions towards potential space/time-resolved information encryption and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Alkali Metal Salts of 10,12-Pentacosadiynoic Acid and Their Dosimetry Applications

Wide-dose-range 2D radiochromic films for radiotherapy, such as GAFchromic EBT, are based on the lithium salt of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (Li-PCDA) as the photosensitive component. We show that there are two solid forms of Li-PCDA-a monohydrated form A and an anhydrous form B. The form used in commercial GAFchromic films is form A due to its short needle-shaped crystals, which provide favorable coating properties. Form B provides an enhanced photoresponse compared to that of form A, but adopts a long needle crystal morphology, which is difficult to process. The two forms were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, CP-MAS ¹³C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. In sum, these data suggest a chelating bridging bidentate coordination mode for the lithium ions. The sodium salt of PCDA (Na-PCDA) is also reported, which is an ionic cocrystal with a formula of Na⁺PCDA^-·3PCDA. The PCDA and PCDA^- ligands display monodentate and bridging bidentate coordination to the sodium ion in contrast to the coordination sphere of the Li-PCDA forms. In contrast to its lithium analogues, Na-PCDA is photostable.

Boosting Wide-Range Tunable Long-Afterglow in 1D Metal-Organic Halide Micro/Nanocrystals for Space/Time-Resolved Information Photonics

Molecular afterglow materials with ultralong-lived excited states have attracted considerable interest owing to their promise for light-emitting devices, optical imaging, and anti-counterfeiting applications. However, the realization of ultralong afterglow emission in low-dimensional micro/nanostructures has remained an open challenge, limiting progress toward new-generation photonic applications. In this work, new types of mono/binuclear metal-organic halide micro/nanocrystals with tunable afterglow properties, made possibly by the rational control over both ultralong-lived room-temperature phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, are developed. Interestingly, the mono/binuclear coordination complexes present excitation-dependent luminescence across a wide range (wavelength > 150 nm) with broad emission color differences from blue to yellow owing to the multiple long-lived excited states. The 1D binuclear metal-organic microrods further exhibit excitation-dependent optical waveguide and space/time dual-resolved afterglow emission properties, endowing them with great potential in wavelength-division multiplexing information photonics and logic gates. Therefore, this work not only communicates the first example of wide-range tunable ultralong afterglow of low-dimensional metal-organic micro/nanocrystals under ambient conditions but also provides a new route to achieve optical communications and photonic logic compilation at the micro/nanoscale.

Topochemical polymerizations for the solid-state synthesis of organic polymers

Topochemical polymerizations are solid-state reactions driven by the alignment of monomers in the crystalline state. The molecular confinement in the monomer crystal lattice offers precise control over the tacticity, packing and crystallinity of the polymer formed in the topochemical reaction. As topochemical reactions occur under solvent- and catalyst-free conditions, giving products in high yield and selectivity/specificity that do not require tedious chromatographic purification, topochemical polymerizations are highly attractive over traditional solution-phase polymer synthesis. By this method, polymers having sophisticated structures and desired topologies can be availed. Often, such ordered packing confers attractive properties to the topochemically-synthesized polymers. Diverse categories of topochemical polymerizations are known, such as polymerizations via [2+2], [4+4], [4+2], and [3+2] cycloadditions, and polymerization of diynes, triynes, dienes, trienes, and quinodimethanes, each of which proceed under suitable stimuli like heat, light or pressure. Each class of these reactions requires a unique packing arrangement of the corresponding monomers for the smooth reaction and produces polymers with distinct properties. This review is penned with the intent of bringing all the types of topochemical polymerizations into a single platform and communicating the versatility of these lattice-controlled polymerizations. We present a brief history of the development of each category and comprehensively review the topochemical synthesis of fully-organic polymers reported in the last twenty years, particularly in crystals. We mainly focus on the various molecular designs and crystal engineering strategies adopted to align monomers in a suitable orientation for polymerization. Finally, we analyze the current challenges and future perspectives in this research field.
