Panchromatic dirhodium photocatalysts for dihydrogen generation with red light

Photo- and Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Heteroleptic Dirhodium(II,II) Complexes: Role of the Bridging and Diimine Ligands

A series of heteroleptic Rh2(II,II) complexes, cis-[Rh2(μ-DPhF)2(μ-bncn)2]2+ (1; bncn = benzo[c]cinnoline), cis-[Rh2(μ-DPhF)(μ-OAc)(μ-bncn)2]2+ (2), and cis-[Rh2(μ-OAc)2(μ-bncn)2]2+ (3), is presented, and the excited state and redox properties of each complex was characterized for the photo- and electrocatalytic production of H2. The oxidation potentials shift anodically from 1 to 3, consistent with a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with significant metal-ligand mixing, Rh2(δ*)/DPhF(π/nb). In contrast, modest differences in the first two bncn-localized reversible reduction potentials were observed in 1 - 3. The lowest energy metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (1ML-LCT) transition, Rh2(δ*)/DPhF(π/nb) → bncn(π*), shifts from 633 nm in 1 to 553 nm in 2, and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) Rh2(π*) → bncn(π*) absorption in 3 appears at 462 nm in CH3CN. Although the 3ML-LCT excited state of 2 is shorter lived than that of 1, 2.7 ns as compared to 19 ns, respectively, photocatalytic hydrogen generation is observed for the former upon 595 nm irradiation in the presence of 0.1 M TsOH (p-tolylsulfonic acid) and 0.1 M BNAH (1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide). The temperature dependence of the 3ML-LCT lifetimes of 1 and 2 shows the presence of a thermally accessible deactivating state. In addition, the singly reduced intermediate, [2]-, is photoactive and able to generate hydrogen in the presence of TsOH. Importantly, the electrocatalytic currents generated by equimolar concentrations of 1 - 3 in CH3CN are nearly identical, consistent with a mechanism of catalysis that is localized on the bncn ligand and does not require a Rh-H hydride intermediate. This finding can be used to develop earth-abundant first-row transition metal complexes for photo- and electrocatalytic H2 production.

Pyridinethiolate-Capped CdSe Quantum Dots for Red-Light-Driven H2 Production in Water

The utilization of low-energy sunlight to produce renewable fuels is a subject of great interest. Here we report the first example of metal chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) capped with a pyridinethiolate carboxylic acid (pyS-COOH) for red-light-driven H2 production in water. The precious-metal-free system is robust over 240 h, and achieves a turnover number (TON) of 43910±305 (vs Ni) with a rate of 31570±1690 μmol g-1 h-1 for hydrogen production. In contrast to the inactive QDs capped with other thiolate ligands, the CdSe-pyS-COOH QDs give a significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yield [ΦΔ (1O2)] in solution.

Iron(III) Carbene Complexes with Tunable Excited State Energies for Photoredox and Upconversion

Substituting precious elements in luminophores and photocatalysts by abundant first-row transition metals remains a significant challenge, and iron continues to be particularly attractive owing to its high natural abundance and low cost. Most iron complexes known to date face severe limitations due to undesirably efficient deactivation of luminescent and photoredox-active excited states. Two new iron(III) complexes with structurally simple chelate ligands enable straightforward tuning of ground and excited state properties, contrasting recent examples, in which chemical modification had a minor impact. Crude samples feature two luminescence bands strongly reminiscent of a recent iron(III) complex, in which this observation was attributed to dual luminescence, but in our case, there is clear-cut evidence that the higher-energy luminescence stems from an impurity and only the red photoluminescence from a doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2LMCT) excited state is genuine. Photoinduced oxidative and reductive electron transfer reactions with methyl viologen and 10-methylphenothiazine occur with nearly diffusion-limited kinetics. Photocatalytic reactions not previously reported for this compound class, in particular the C-H arylation of diazonium salts and the aerobic hydroxylation of boronic acids, were achieved with low-energy red light excitation. Doublet-triplet energy transfer (DTET) from the luminescent 2LMCT state to an anthracene annihilator permits the proof of principle for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion based on a molecular iron photosensitizer. These findings are relevant for the development of iron complexes featuring photophysical and photochemical properties competitive with noble-metal-based compounds.

Ligand-Centered Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production in an Axially Capped Rh2(II,II) Paddlewheel Complex with Red Light

A new series of Rh2(II,II) complexes with the formula cis-[Rh2(DTolF)2(bpnp)(L)]2+, where bpnp = 2,7-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine, DTolF = N,N'-di(p-tolyl) formamidinate, and L = pdz (pyridazine; 2), cinn (cinnoline; 3), and bncn (benzo[c]cinnoline; 4), were synthesized from the precursor cis-[Rh2(DTolF)2(bpnp)(CH3CN)2]2+ (1). The first reduction couple in 2-4 is localized on the bpnp ligand at approximately -0.52 V vs Ag/AgCl in CH3CN (0.1 M TBAPF6), followed by reduction of the corresponding diazine ligand. Complex 1 exhibits a Rh2(δ*)/DTolF → bpnp(π*) metal/ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (1ML-LCT) absorption with a maximum at 767 nm (ε = 1800 M-1 cm-1). This transition is also present in the spectra of 2-4, overlaid with the Rh2(δ*)/DTolF → L(π*) 1ML-LCT bands at 516 nm in 2 (L = pdz), 640 nm in 3 (L = cinn), and 721 nm in 4 (L = bncn). Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit Rh2(δ*)/DTolF → bpnp 3ML-LCT excited states with lifetimes, τ, of 3 and 5 ns, respectively, in CH3CN, whereas the lowest energy 3ML-LCT state in 4 is Rh2(δ*)/DTolF → bncn in nature with τ = 1 ns. Irradiation of 4 with 670 nm light in DMF in the presence of 0.1 M TsOH (p-toluene sulfonic acid) and 30 mM BNAH (1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide) results in the production of H2 with a turnover number (TON) of 16 over 24 h. The axial capping of the Rh2(II,II) bimetallic core with the bpnp ligand prevents the formation of an Rh-H hydride intermediate. These results show that the observed photocatalytic reactivity is localized on the bncn ligand, representing the first example of ligand-centered H2 production.

Efficient Red-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution with an Anthraquinone Organic Dye

The direct utilization of the full solar spectrum to obtain renewable fuels remains a challenge because the conversion of the low-energy light (red and near-infrared) is difficult. Current light-driven systems show activity for hydrogen generation with the high-energy part of sunlight. Here we report the use of a simple anthraquinone organic dye in an artificial photosynthetic system that promotes efficient red-light-driven production of hydrogen. The system contains no noble metal and exhibits a turnover number greater than 0.78 million and a quantum yield of 30.6% at 630 nm. A mechanistic study revealed that the excited-state and redox properties of the chromophore are critical to achieving high activity and stability.

Cobalt(III) Carbene Complex with an Electronic Excited-State Structure Similar to Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Compounds

Many organometallic iridium(III) complexes have photoactive excited states with mixed metal-to-ligand and intraligand charge transfer (MLCT/ILCT) character, which form the basis for numerous applications in photophysics and photochemistry. Cobalt(III) complexes with analogous MLCT excited-state properties seem to be unknown yet, despite the fact that iridium(III) and cobalt(III) can adopt identical low-spin d⁶ valence electron configurations due to their close chemical relationship. Using a rigid tridentate chelate ligand (L^CNC), in which a central amido π-donor is flanked by two σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbene subunits, we obtained a robust homoleptic complex [Co(L^CNC)₂](PF₆), featuring a photoactive excited state with substantial MLCT character. Compared to the vast majority of isoelectronic iron(II) complexes, the MLCT state of [Co(L^CNC)₂](PF₆) is long-lived because it does not deactivate as efficiently into lower-lying metal-centered excited states; furthermore, it engages directly in photoinduced electron transfer reactions. The comparison with [Fe(L^CNC)₂](PF₆), as well as structural, electrochemical, and UV–vis transient absorption studies, provides insight into new ligand design principles for first-row transition-metal complexes with photophysical and photochemical properties reminiscent of those known from the platinum group metals.

Unexpected Imidazole Coordination to the Dirhodium Center in a Protein Environment: Insights from X-ray Crystallography and Quantum Chemistry

X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that the adduct formed upon the reaction of dirhodium(II,II) tetraacetate with RNase A reacts with imidazole, leading to the formation of an unexpected product with the imidazole that binds the dirhodium center at an equatorial site rather than an axial site. Combination of Organic Dye and Iron for CO2 Reduction with Pentanuclear Fe2Na3 Purpurin Photocatalysts

Molecular photocatalysts designed with earth-abundant elements are rare and challenging in artificial photosynthesis study. Herein, we report a multimetallic Fe2Na3 purpurin (1) complex for the reduction of CO2 in DMF under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic system achieves 91% selectivity and 2625 ± 334 turnovers of CO in 120 h, which is among the highest reported for a noble-metal-free catalyst without an additional photosensitizer. UV-vis and electrochemical studies suggest that the mechanism involves subsequent reductions and protonations of 1 to generate [FeII2Na3((H)2PP)6]5- and [FeIII2Na3((H)2PP)6]3- as the active photocatalysts in CO2 reduction.

Reactivity of a fluorine-containing dirhodium tetracarboxylate compound with proteins

Dirhodium complexes of general formula [Rh2(O2CR)4]L2 are a well-known class of bimetallic compounds that are used as efficient catalysts for a variety of reactions and have been shown to be potent antibacterial and anticancer agents. The catalytic and biological properties of these complexes largely depend on the nature of the bridging carboxylate ligands. Trifluoroacetate (tfa)-containing dirhodium compounds have been used to build artificial metalloenzymes upon reaction with peptides and have been shown to be more cytotoxic than dirhodium tetraacetate. However, there is no structural information on the interaction between these compounds and proteins. Here, cis-Rh2(μ-O2CCH3)2(μ-O2CCF3)2 ([cis-Rh2(OAc)2(tfa)2]) has been synthesized and its reaction with bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNase A) and hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) was analyzed using a combination of different techniques, including Fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and macromolecular X-ray crystallography, with the aim to unveil the differences in the reactivity of tfa-containing dihrodium complexes with proteins when compared to [Rh2(OAc)4]. [cis-Rh2(OAc)2(tfa)2] and [Rh2(OAc)4] bind the N atoms of His side chains of RNase A at the axial position; however the fluorine-containing compound rapidly loses its tfa ligands, while [Rh2(OAc)4] can retain the acetate ligands upon protein binding. The reactivity of [cis-Rh2(OAc)2(tfa)2] with HEWL is slightly distinct when compared to that of [Rh2(OAc)4] under the same experimental conditions; however, both [cis-Rh2(OAc)2(tfa)2] and [Rh2(OAc)4] degrade when soaked within HEWL crystals. These results provide a structural-based guide for the design of new heterogenous chiral dirhodium/peptide and dirhodium/protein adducts with application in the fields of organic synthesis and asymmetric catalysis.

Dirhodium-Based Supramolecular Framework Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

The direct conversion of solar energy to clean fuels as alternatives to fossil fuels is an important approach for addressing the global energy shortage and environmental problems. Here, we introduce a new dirhodium-complex-based framework assembly as a heterogeneous molecule-based photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution using visible light. Two dirhodium complexes bearing visible-light-harvesting BODIPY (boron dipyrromethene, BDP) moieties were newly designed and synthesized. The obtained complexes were self-assembled to framework structures (supramolecular framework catalysts), which are stabilized intermolecular noncovalent interactions. These frameworks retained excellent visible-light-harvesting properties of BDP moieties. Investigation of the catalytic performance of the supramolecular framework catalysts revealed that the supramolecular framework catalyst with heavy atoms at BDP moieties exhibited excellent performance in the formation of hydrogen with a reaction rate of 275.8 μmol g^-1 h^-1 under irradiation of visible light, whereas the supramolecular framework catalyst without heavy atoms at BDP moieties was inactive. Moreover, the system has the additional benefits of high durability (up to 96 h), reusability, and facile removal from the reaction mixture. We also disclosed the effect of heavy atoms at BDP moieties on the catalytic activity and proposed a reaction mechanism.
