Single-ion magnetism in the extended solid-state: insights from X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy

Room-temperature-persistent magnetic interaction between coordination complexes and nanoparticles in maghemite-based nanohybrids

Maghemite nanoparticles functionalised with Co(II) coordination complexes at their surface show a significant increase of their magnetic anisotropy, leading to a doubling of the blocking temperature and a sixfold increase of the coercive field. Magnetometric studies suggest an enhancement that is not related to surface disordering, and point to a molecular effect involving magnetic exchange interactions mediated by the oxygen atoms at the interface as its source. Field- and temperature-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies show that the magnetic anisotropy enhancement is not limited to surface atoms and involves the core of the nanoparticle. These studies also point to a mechanism driven by anisotropic exchange and confirm the strength of the magnetic exchange interactions. The coupling between the complex and the nanoparticle persists at room temperature. Simulations based on the XMCD data give an effective exchange field value through the oxido coordination bridge between the Co(II) complex and the nanoparticle that is comparable to the exchange field between iron ions in bulk maghemite. Further evidence of the effectiveness of the oxido coordination bridge in mediating the magnetic interaction at the interface is given with the Ni(II) analog to the Co(II) surface-functionalised nanoparticles. A substrate-induced magnetic response is observed for the Ni(II) complexes, up to room temperature.

Quantifying the influence of 3d-4s mixing on linearly coordinated metal-ions by L2,3-edge XAS and XMCD

The mixing valence d and s orbitals are predicted to strongly influence the electronic structure of linearly coordinated molecules, including transition metals, lanthanides and actinides. In specific cases, novel magnetic properties, such as single-ion magnetic coercivity or long spin decoherence times, ensue. Inspired by how the local coordination symmetry can engender such novel phenomena, in this study, we focus our attention on dopants (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) in lithium nitride to accept innovation from molecular magnetism in a high symmetry P6/mmm solid-state crystal. The linear coordination environment results in strong 3d-4s mixing, proving to be an ideal series to investigate the role of d-s mixing and bonding on electronic structure and magnetism. It is shown that L2,3-edge XAS can be applied to experimentally identify the presence of 3d-4s mixing and the influence this has on the ligand-field splitting. XMCD specifies how spin-orbit coupling is affected. The combined spectroscopies are analysed to determine the effect of 4s mixing with support from ab initio calculations. The results provide new insight of relevance to future applications, including quantum information processing and the sustainable replacement of rare earths in magnets.

Neglected Importance of Anharmonicity in Quantifying the Renner-Teller Effect

Linear molecules in degenerate electronic states are influenced by the Renner-Teller (RT) effect. Currently the formula to quantify this vibronic interaction only considers the harmonic term. However, such a harmonic formula cannot well describe molecules that have double-well potential along the bending coordinate. In this work, we propose a new formula to quantify the RT effect by explicitly including the anharmonic term. A sign function and a delta function are additionally included to distinguish different scenarios. It is mathematically proved that the new formula is capable of differentiating different degrees of RT splitting. Representative molecules of different types are calculated. According to the new formula, molecules experiencing a weak RT effect have a positive parameter smaller than 1. For those experiencing a medium RT effect, the parameter will be negative. For others experiencing a large RT effect, the parameter will be larger than 1.

Terahertz Magneto-Optical Excitations of the sd-Hybrid States of Lithium Nitridocobaltate Li2(Li1-xCox)N

We report the results of the experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic anisotropy of single crystals of the Co-doped lithium nitride Li₂(Li_1-xCo_x)N with x = 0.005, 0.01, and 0.02. It was shown recently that doping of the Li₃N crystalline matrix with 3d transition metal (TM) ions yields superior magnetic properties comparable with the strongly anisotropic single-molecule magnetism of rare-earth complexes. Our combined electron spin resonance (ESR) and THz spectroscopic investigations of Li₂(Li_1-xCo_x)N in a very broad frequency range up to 1.7 THz and in magnetic fields up to 16 T enable an accurate determination of the energies of the spin levels of the ground state multiplet Ŝ = 1 of the paramagnetic Co(I) ion. In particular, we find a very large zero field splitting (ZFS) of almost 1 THz (∼4 meV or 33 cm^-1) between the ground-state singlet and the first excited doublet state. On the computational side, ab initio many-body quantum chemistry calculations reveal a ZFS gap consistent with the experimental value. Such a large ZFS energy yields a very strong single-ion magnetic anisotropy of easy-plane type resembling that of rare-earth ions. Its microscopic origin is the unusual linear coordination of the Co(I) ions in Li₂(Li_1-xCo_x)N with two nitrogen ligands. Our calculations also evidence a strong 3d-4s hybridization of the electronic shells resulting in significant electron spin density at the ⁵⁹Co nuclei, which may be responsible for the experimentally observed extraordinary large hyperfine structure of the ESR signals. Altogether, our experimental spectroscopic and computational results enable comprehensive insights into the remarkable properties of the Li₂[Li_1-x(TM)_x]N magnets on the microscopic level.

Aufbau vs. non-Aufbau ground states in two-coordinate d7 single-molecule magnets

Magnetic anisotropy is generated in two related d7 single-molecule magnets; (1) via 3d-4s orbital mixing in FeI; and (2) a non-Aufbau ground state in CoII, demonstrating that the electronic configurations are large retained independent of geometry.
