Role of molecular bend angle and biaxiality in the stabilization of the twist-bend nematic phase

Photoinduced Phase Transitions of Imine-Based Liquid Crystal Dimers with Twist-Bend Nematic Phases

Photoisomerizable molecules in liquid crystals (LCs) allow for photoinduced phase transitions, facilitating applications in a wide variety of photoresponsive materials. In contrast to the widely investigated azobenzene structure, research on the photoinduced phase-transition behavior of imine-based LCs is considerably limited. We herein report the thermal and photoinduced phase-transition behaviors of photoisomerizable imine-based LC dimers with twist-bend nematic (NTB) phases. We synthesize two homologous series of ester- and thioether-linked N-(4-cyanobenzylidene)aniline-based bent-shaped LC dimers with an even number of carbon atoms (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) in the central alkylene spacers, namely, CBCOOnSBA(CN) and CBOCOnSBA(CN), possessing oppositely directed ester linkages, C=OO and OC=O, respectively. Their thermal phase-transition behavior is examined using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All dimers form a monotropic NTB phase below the temperature of the conventional nematic (N) phase upon cooling. Remarkably, the NTB phases of CBCOOnSBA(CN) (n = 2, 4, 6, and 8) and CBOCOnSBA(CN) (n = 6 and 8) supercool to room temperature and vitrify without crystallization. In addition, the phase-transition temperatures and entropy changes of CBCOOnSBA(CN) are lower than those of CBOCOnSBA(CN) at the same n. Under UV light irradiation, the NTB and N phases transition to the N and isotropic phases, respectively, and reversibly return to their initial LC phases when the UV light is turned off.

Development of Donor-π-Acceptor-Type Fluorinated Tolanes as Compact Condensed Phase Luminophores and Applications in Photoluminescent Liquid-Crystalline Molecules

Fluorinated tolanes, produced by introducing fluorine atoms into one of the aromatic rings of tolane, emitted almost no fluorescence in a solution state, but the fluorescence intensity increased dramatically in the crystalline state because of intermolecular H⋅⋅⋅F hydrogen bonds. The photoluminescent (PL) colors depend on the molecular orbitals, dipole moments, and molecular aggregated structures can be varied by controlling terminal substituents along the major molecular axis. The introduction of a long alkoxy or semifluoroalkoxy unit as a flexible chain into the terminal positions along the major molecular axis induced the formation of a liquid-crystalline (LC) phase; fluorinated tolanes act both as luminophores and as mesogens, leading to the molecular design of new photoluminescent LC molecules (PLLCs). The results also indicated that a fluorinated tolane dimer, which consists of two fluorinated tolanes linked by a flexible alkylene spacer, also becomes a novel PLLC.

Colloidal Clusters and Networks Formed by Oppositely Charged Nanoparticles with Varying Stiffnesses

Colloidal clusters and gels are ubiquitous in science and technology. Particle softness has a strong effect on interparticle interactions; however, our understanding of the role of this factor in the formation of colloidal clusters and gels is only beginning to evolve. Here, we report the results of experimental and simulation studies of the impact of particle softness on the assembly of clusters and networks from mixtures of oppositely charged polymer nanoparticles (NPs). Experiments were performed below or above the polymer glass transition temperature, at which the interaction potential and adhesive forces between the NPs were significantly varied. Hard NPs assembled in fractal clusters that subsequently organized in a kinetically arrested colloidal gel, while soft NPs formed dense precipitating aggregates, due to the NP deformation and the decreased interparticle distance. Importantly, interactions of hard and soft NPs led to the formation of discrete precipitating NP aggregates at a relatively low volume fraction of soft NPs. A phenomenological model was developed for interactions of oppositely charged NPs with varying softnesses. The experimental results were in agreement with molecular dynamics simulations based on the model. This work provides insight on interparticle interactions before, during, and after the formation of hard-hard, hard-soft, and soft-soft contacts and has impact for numerous applications of reversible colloidal gels, including their use as inks for additive manufacturing.

How Do Intermolecular Interactions Evolve at the Nematic to Twist–Bent Phase Transition?

Polarized beam infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides valuable information on changes in the orientation of samples in nematic phases, especially on the role of intermolecular interactions in forming the periodically modulated twist–bent phase. Infrared absorbance measurements and quantum chemistry calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the structure and how the molecules interact in the nematic (N) and twist–bend (N_TB) phases of thioether dimers. The nematic twist–bend phase observed significant changes in the mean IR absorbance. On cooling, the transition from the N phase to the N_TB phase was found to be accompanied by a marked decrease in absorbance for longitudinal dipoles. Then, with further cooling, the absorbance of the transverse dipoles increased, indicating that transverse dipoles became correlated in parallel. To investigate the influence of the closest neighbors, DFT calculations were performed. As a result of the optimization of the molecular cores system, we observed changes in the square of the transition dipoles, which well corresponds to absorbance changes observed in the IR spectra. Interactions of molecules dominated by pairing were observed, as well as the axial shift of the core to each other.

Structure of the twist-bend nematic phase with respect to the orientational molecular order of the thioether-linked dimers

An analysis of the IR absorbance for the segmented functional groups of liquid crystal dimers mesogen and linker enabled the orientation order to be determined and information about the dipole interactions in the nematic and twist-bend nematic phases to be obtained. The long axis orientational order increases as the temperature decreases in the nematic phase, although much more slowly than for the classical nematics, and then reverses this trend in the twist-bend nematic phase due to the tilt of the molecules. In the nematic phase, the short axis of the molecule performs an isotropic uniform rotation and has a uniaxial alignment. In the twist-bend nematic phase, however, biaxial ordering occurs and grows significantly in accordance with the helical deformation of the director. Changes in the mean absorbance in the twist-bend nematic phase were observed: a decrease for the longitudinal dipole at the nematic-twist-bend nematic phase transition, thus emphasizing the antiparallel axial interaction of the dipoles, while the absorbance of the transverse dipoles remains unchanged up to 340 K, and then the latter become parallelly correlated.

The Beauty of Twist-Bend Nematic Phase: Fast Switching Domains, First Order Fréedericksz Transition and a Hierarchy of Structures

The twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) exhibits a complicated hierarchy of structures responsible for several intriguing properties presented here. These are: the observation of a fast electrooptic response, the exhibition of a large electroclinic effect, and the observation of an unusual pattern of the temperature dependence of birefringence of bent-shaped bimesogens in parallel-rubbed planar-aligned cells. These unusual effects inspired the use of highly sophisticated techniques that led to the discovery of the twist-bend nematic phase. Results of the optical retardation of a parallel-rubbed planar-aligned cell show that the ‘heliconical angle’ (the angle the local director makes with the optical axis) starts increasing in the high temperature N phase, it exhibits a jump at the N–NTB transition temperature and continues to increase in magnitude with a further reduction in temperature. The liquid crystalline parallel-rubbed planar-aligned and twist-aligned cells in this phase exhibit fascinating phenomena such as a demonstration of the beautiful stripes and dependence of their periodicity on temperature. The Fréedericksz transition in the NTB phase is found to be of the first order both in rubbed planar and homeotropic-aligned cells, in contrast to the second order transition exhibited by a conventional nematic phase. This transition shows a significant hysteresis as well as an abrupt change in the orientation of the director as a function of the applied electric field. Hierarchical structures are revealed using the technique of polymer templating the structure of the liquid crystalline phase of interest, and imaging of the resulting structure by scanning electron microscopy.

A generalized density-modulated twist-splay-bend phase of banana-shaped particles

In 1976, Meyer predicted that bend distortions of the nematic director field are complemented by deformations of either twist or splay, yielding twist-bend and splay-bend nematic phases, respectively. Four decades later, the existence of the splay-bend nematic phase remains dubious, and the origin of these spontaneous distortions uncertain. Here, we conjecture that bend deformations of the nematic director can be complemented by simultaneous distortions of both twist and splay, yielding a twist-splay-bend nematic phase. Using theory and simulations, we show that the coupling between polar order and bend deformations drives the formation of modulated phases in systems of curved rods. We find that twist-bend phases transition to splay-bend phases via intermediate twist-splay-bend phases, and that splay distortions are always accompanied by periodic density modulations due to the coupling of the particle curvature with the non-uniform curvature of the splayed director field, implying that the twist-splay-bend and splay-bend phases of banana-shaped particles are actually smectic phases.

The so-called twist-bend and splay-bend nematic liquid crystal phases are important concepts for studying bent-core mesogens. Chiappini et al. use a theory/simulation approach to suggest that the transition proceed via a twist-splay-bend phase which may be obscured by density modulations.

Molecular biaxiality determines the helical structure - infrared measurements of the molecular order in the nematic twist-bend phase of difluoro terphenyl dimer

Fourier-transform infrared polarized spectroscopy was employed, to obtain the three components of the infrared absorbance for a series of bent-shaped dimers containing double fluorinated terphenyl core (DTC5Cn, n = 5, 7, 9, 11). The data were used to calculate both uniaxial and biaxial order parameters, for various molecular groups of dimers. The molecule bend was estimated based on the observed differences between the uniaxial order parameters for the terphenyl core and central hydrocarbon linker. The orientational order, distinctly reverses its monotonic trend of increase to decrease at the transition temperature, from the uniaxial nematic to the twist-bend nematic phase as result of the director tilt in latter/(twist-bend) phase. The molecular biaxiality, which is negligible in the nematic phase, starts increasing on entering the twist-bend nematic phase, following a sin-square relationships with the tilt angle. The local director curvature is found to be controlled by the molecular biaxiality parameter.

Twist-Bend Nematic Phase from the Landau-de Gennes Perspective

Generalized Landau-de Gennes theory is proposed that comprehensively explains currently available experimental data for the heliconical twist-bend nematic (N_TB) phase observed in liquid crystalline systems of chemically achiral bent-core-like molecules. A bifurcation analysis gives insight into possible structures that the model can predict and guides in the numerical analysis of relative stability of the isotropic (I), uniaxial nematic (N_U), and twist-bend nematic phases. An estimate of constitutive parameters of the model from temperature variation of the nematic order parameter and the Frank elastic constants in the nematic phase enables us to demonstrate quantitative agreement between the calculated and experimentally determined temperature dependence of the pitch and conical angle in N_TB. Properties of order parameters also explain a puzzling lack of a half-pitch band in resonant soft X-ray scattering. Other key findings of the model are predictions of I-N_TB and N_U-N_TB tricritical points and insight into biaxiality of N_TB.

Structure and grating efficiency of thin cells filled by a twist-bend nematic liquid crystal

A twist-bend nematic (N_{TB}) liquid crystalline phase spontaneously forms modulated structures on a microscale level when confined in thin planar cells. Preliminary studies showed that these cells can be used as polarization gratings. Here we present a theoretical description of the formation of a two-dimensionally modulated structure. By considering the N_{TB} phase as a pseudolayer medium, a threshold condition for the onset of a modulated structure is calculated for weak and strong boundary conditions in the case of initially bookshelf or pretilt alignment of pseudolayers. Based on the modeled structure we determine spatial variation of the optic axis and calculate properties of the transmitted diffracted light. Results of the beam propagation method (BPM) and transfer matrix method are compared and it is shown that a more complex BPM gives better agreement with experimental results, meaning that even in thin cells the diffraction of light inside the grating should not be neglected.

Biaxiality-driven twist-bend to splay-bend nematic phase transition induced by an electric field

Although the existence of the twist-bend (NTB) and splay-bend (NSB) nematic phases was predicted long ago, only the former has as yet been observed experimentally, whereas the latter remains elusive. This is especially disappointing because the NSB nematic is promising for applications in electro-optic devices. By applying an electric field to a planar cell filled with the compound CB7CB, we have found an NTB-NSB phase transition using birefringence measurements. This field-induced transition to the biaxial NSB occurred, although the field was applied along the symmetry axis of the macroscopically uniaxial NTB Therefore, this transition is a counterintuitive example of breaking of the macroscopic uniaxial symmetry. We show by theoretical modeling that the transition cannot be explained without considering explicitly the biaxiality of both phases at the microscopic scale. This strongly suggests that molecular biaxiality should be a key factor favoring the stability of the NSB phase.
