Abstract
In recent decades, there has been significant interest in inertial microfluidics due to its high throughput, ease of fabrication, and no need for external forces. The focusing efficiency of inertial microfluidic systems relies entirely on the geometrical features of microchannels because hydrodynamic forces (inertial lift forces and Dean drag forces) are the main driving forces in inertial microfluidic devices. In the past few years, novel microchannel structures have been propounded to improve particle manipulation efficiency. However, the fabrication of these unconventional structures has remained a serious challenge. Although researchers have pushed forward the frontiers of microfabrication technologies, the fabrication techniques employed for inertial microfluidics have not been discussed comprehensively. This review introduces the microfabrication approaches used for creating inertial microchannels, including photolithography, xurography, laser cutting, micromachining, microwire technique, etching, hot embossing, 3D printing, and injection molding. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods have also been discussed. Then, the techniques are reviewed regarding resolution, structures, cost, and materials. This review provides a thorough insight into the manufacturing methods of inertial microchannels, which could be helpful for future studies to improve the harvesting yield and resolution by choosing a proper fabrication technique.

Abstract
Although three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies can customize a diverse range of devices, cross-3D printing technique/material comparisons aimed at optimizing the fabrication of analytical devices have been rare. In this study, we evaluated the surface features of the channels in knotted reactors (KRs) fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing [with poly(lactic acid) (PLA), polyamide, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene filaments], and digital light processing and stereolithography 3D printing with photocurable resins. Also, their ability to retain Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb ions was evaluated to achieve the maximal sensitivities of these metal ions. After optimizing the techniques and materials for 3D printing of the KRs, the retention conditions, and the automatic analytical system, we observed good correlations (R > 0.9793) for the three 3D printing techniques in terms of the surface roughnesses of their channel sidewalls with respect to the signal intensities of their retained metal ions. The FDM 3D-printed PLA KR provided the best analytical performance, with the retention efficiencies of the tested metal ions all being greater than 73.9% and with the detection limits of the method ranging from 0.1 to 5.6 ng L-1. We used this analytical method to perform analyses of the tested metal ions in several reference materials (CASS-4, SLEW-3, 1643f, and 2670a). Spike analyses of complicated real samples verified the reliability and applicability of this analytical method, highlighting the possibility of tuning 3D printing techniques and materials to optimize the fabrication of mission-oriented analytical devices.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies are increasingly dominating the market for human therapeutic and diagnostic agents. For this reason, continuous methods-such as perfusion processes-are being explored and optimized in an ongoing effort to increase product yields. Unfortunately, many established cell retention devices-such as tangential flow filtration-rely on membranes that are prone to clogging, fouling, and undesirable product retention at high cell densities. To circumvent these problems, in this work, we have developed a 3D-printed microfluidic spiral separator for cell retention, which can readily be adapted and replaced according to process conditions (i.e., a plug-and-play system) due to the fast and flexible 3D printing technique. In addition, this system was also expanded to include automatic flushing, web-based control, and notification via a cellphone application. This set-up constitutes a proof of concept that was successful at inducing a stable process operation at a viable cell concentration of 10-17 × 106 cells/mL in a hybrid mode (with alternating cell retention and cell bleed phases) while significantly reducing both shear stress and channel blockage. In addition to increasing efficiency to nearly 100%, this microfluidic device also improved production conditions by successfully separating dead cells and cell debris and increasing cell viability within the bioreactor.

Abstract
As a promising new micro-physiological system, organ-on-a-chip has been widely utilized for in vitro pharmaceutical study and tissues engineering based on the three-dimensional constructions of tissues/organs and delicate replication of in vivo-like microenvironment. To better observe the biological processes, a variety of sensors have been integrated to realize in-situ, real-time, and sensitive monitoring of critical signals for organs development and disease modeling. Herein, we discuss the recent research advances made with respect to sensors-integrated organ-on-a-chip in this overall review. Firstly, we briefly explore the underlying fabrication procedures of sensors within microfluidic platforms and several classifications of sensory principles. Then, emphasis is put on the highlighted applications of different types of organ-on-a-chip incorporated with various sensors. Last but not least, perspective on the remaining challenges and future development of sensors-integrated organ-on-a-chip are presented.

Abstract
Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted basic and applied research due to their immense potential to enable applications in fields as varied as drug delivery and bioremediation. Conventional synthesis schemes led to wide particle size distributions and inhomogeneous morphologies and crystalline structures. This has been attributed to the inability to control nucleation and growth processes under the conventional conditions of bulk batch processes. Here, we attempted to address these issues by scaling down the synthesis process aided by microfluidic devices, as they provide highly controlled and stable mixing patterns. Accordingly, we proposed three micromixers with different channel configurations, namely, serpentine, triangular, and a 3D arrangement with abrupt changes in fluid direction. The micromixers were first studied in silico, aided by Comsol Multiphysics® to investigate the obtained mixing patterns, and consequently, their potential for controlled growth and the nucleation processes required to form MNPs of uniform size and crystalline structure. The devices were then manufactured using a low-cost approach based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and laser cutting. Testing the micromixers in the synthesis of MNPs revealed homogeneous morphologies and particle size distributions, and the typical crystalline structure reported previously. A life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis for the devices was conducted in comparison with conventional batch co-precipitation synthesis to investigate the potential impacts on water and energy consumption. The obtained results revealed that such consumptions are higher than those of the conventional process. However, they can be reduced by conducting the synthesis with reused micromixers, as new PMMA is not needed for their assembly prior to operation. We are certain that the proposed approach represents an advantageous alternative to co-precipitation synthesis schemes, in terms of continuous production and more homogeneous physicochemical parameters of interest such as size, morphologies, and crystalline structure. Future work should be directed towards improving the sustainability indicators of the micromixers’ manufacturing process.

Abstract
Passive and label-free microfluidic devices have no complex external accessories or detection-interfering label particles. These devices are now widely used in medical and bioresearch applications, including cell focusing and cell separation. Geometric structure plays the most essential role when designing a passive and label-free microfluidic chip. An exquisitely designed geometric structure can change particle trajectories and improve chip performance. However, the geometric design principles of passive and label-free microfluidics have not been comprehensively acknowledged. Here, we review the geometric innovations of several microfluidic schemes, including deterministic lateral displacement (DLD), inertial microfluidics (IMF), and viscoelastic microfluidics (VEM), and summarize the most creative innovations and design principles of passive and label-free microfluidics. We aim to provide a guideline for researchers who have an interest in geometric innovations of passive label-free microfluidics.

Abstract
Since its invention in the 1980s, 3D printing has evolved into a versatile technique for the additive manufacturing of diverse objects and tools, using various materials. The relative flexibility, straightforwardness, and ability to enable rapid prototyping are tremendous advantages offered by this technique compared to conventional methods for miniaturized and microfluidic systems fabrication (such as soft lithography). The development of 3D printers exhibiting high printer resolution has enabled the fabrication of accurate miniaturized and microfluidic systems-which have, in turn, substantially reduced both device sizes and required sample volumes. Moreover, the continuing development of translucent, heat resistant, and biocompatible materials will make 3D printing more and more useful for applications in biotechnology in the coming years. Today, a wide variety of 3D-printed objects in biotechnology-ranging from miniaturized cultivation chambers to microfluidic lab-on-a-chip devices for diagnostics-are already being deployed in labs across the world. This review explains the 3D printing technologies that are currently used to fabricate such miniaturized microfluidic devices, and also seeks to offer some insight into recent developments demonstrating the use of these tools for biotechnological applications such as cell culture, separation techniques, and biosensors.

Abstract
Drug detection in biofluids has always been great importance for clinical diagnosis. Many detection technologies such as chromatography-mass spectrometry, have been applied to the detection of drugs. However, these technologies required multi-step operations, including complicated and time-consuming pretreatment processes and operations of bulky detection instruments, significantly limiting development of drug detection in clinical diagnosis. Herein, a portable 3D-printed paper cartridge was fabricated for fast sample preconcentration and direct drugs quantitative detection in biofluids by a portable Raman spectrometer. This cartridge contained both paper tip with silver nanowires to preconcentrate samples and achieve surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) measurement, and 3D-printed cartridge to build enclosed environment for the improvement of detection, which cost only one dollar. The preconcentration ability of the cartridge was up to 18.13-fold fluorescence enhancement and compared to the non-preconcentration method, it achieved 9.93-fold improvement of SERS performance. The anticancer drug of epirubicin hydrochloride, cyclophosphamide and their mixtures were quantitatively detected in the bovine serum or artificial urine. The integrated detection procedure required only 1 h, including sample pretreatment and preconcentration, drying, SERS measurements, and quantification analysis. This 3D-printed paper cartridge constituted a portable detection platform that would be potentially a practical and point-of-care detection tool for drug preconcentration and quantification on the clinical diagnosis.
