Abstract
Magnetic field-directed colloidal interactions offer facile tools for assembly of structures that range from linear chains to multidimensional hierarchical architectures. While the field-driven assembly of colloidal particles has commonly been investigated in unbounded media, a knowledge gap remains concerning such assembly in confined microenvironments. Here, we investigate how confinement of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in microspheres directs their magnetic assembly into hierarchical architectures. Microdroplets from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) liquid precursor containing dispersed iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were placed in a static magnetic field leading to the formation of organized assemblies inside the host droplets. By changing the MNP concentrations, we revealed a sequence of microstructures inside the droplets, ranging from linear chains at a low MNP loading, transitioning to a combination of chains and networked bundles, to solely 3D bundles at high MNP loading. These experimental results were analyzed with the aid of COMSOL simulations where we calculated the potential energy to identify the preferred assembly conformations. The chains at high MNP loading minimized their energy by aggregating laterally to form bundles with their MNP dipoles being out-of-registry. We cured these PDMS droplets to immobilize the assemblies by forming soft microbeads. These microbeads constitute an "interaction toolbox" with different magnetic macroscale responses, which are governed by the structuring of the MNPs and their magnetic polarizability. We show that thanks to their ability to rotate by field-induced torque under a rotating field, these microbeads can be employed in applications such as optical modulators and microrollers.

Abstract
Using micro/nanorobots (MNRs) for targeted therapy within the human body is an emerging research direction in biomedical science. These nanoscale to microscale miniature robots possess specificity and precision that are lacking in most traditional treatment modalities. Currently, research on electrically controlled micro/nanorobots is still in its early stages, with researchers primarily focusing on the fabrication and manipulation of these robots to meet complex clinical demands. This review aims to compare the fabrication, powering, and locomotion of various electrically controlled micro/nanorobots, and explore their advantages, disadvantages, and potential applications.

Abstract
Pour sand into a container and only the grains near the top surface move. The collective motion associated with the translational and rotational energy of the grains in a thin flowing layer is quickly dissipated as friction through multibody interactions. Alternatively, consider what will happen to a bed of particles if one applies a torque to each individual particle. In this paper, we demonstrate an experimental system where torque is applied at the constituent level through a rotating magnetic field in a dense bed of microrollers. The net result is the grains roll uphill, forming a heap with a negative angle of repose. Two different regimes have been identified related to the degree of mobility or fluidisation of the particles in the bulk. Velocimetry of the near surface flowing layer reveals the collective motion of these responsive particles scales in a similar way to flowing bulk granular flows. A simple granular model that includes cohesion accurately predicts the apparent negative coefficient of friction. In contrast to the response of active or responsive particles that mimic thermodynamic principles, this system results in macroscopic collective behavior that has the kinematics of a purely dissipative granular system.

Abstract
Magnetically actuated Janus surface microrollers are promising microrobotic platform with numerous potential biomedical engineering applications. While the locomotion models based on a "rotating sphere on a nearby wall" can be adapted to surface microrollers, real-world dynamics may differ from the proposed theories/simulations. In this study, we examine the locomotion efficiency of surface microrollers with diameters of 5, 10, 25, and 50 µm and demonstrate that computational fluid dynamics simulations cannot accurately capture locomotion characteristics for different sizes of microrollers. Specifically, we observe a significant mismatch between lift forces predicted by simulations and opposite balancing forces, particularly for smaller microrollers. We propose the existence of an unaccounted force component in the direction of lift, which is not included in the computational fluid dynamics simulations. Overall, our findings provide a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms underlying surface microroller locomotion and have important implications for future applications in biomedical engineering.

Abstract
It is known that obstacles can hydrodynamically trap bacteria and synthetic microswimmers in orbits, where the trapping time heavily depends on the swimmer flow field and noise is needed to escape the trap. Here, we use experiments and simulations to investigate the trapping of microrollers by obstacles. Microrollers are rotating particles close to a bottom surface, which have a prescribed propulsion direction imposed by an external rotating magnetic field. The flow field that drives their motion is quite different from previously studied swimmers. We found that the trapping time can be controlled by modifying the obstacle size or the colloid-obstacle repulsive potential. We detail the mechanisms of the trapping and find two remarkable features: The microroller is confined in the wake of the obstacle, and it can only enter the trap with Brownian motion. While noise is usually needed to escape traps in dynamical systems, here, we show that it is the only means to reach the hydrodynamic attractor.

Abstract
Electrically powered micro- and nanomotors are promising tools for in vitro single-cell analysis. In particular, single cells can be trapped, transported, and electroporated by a Janus particle (JP) using an externally applied electric field. However, while dielectrophoretic (DEP)-based cargo manipulation can be achieved at high-solution conductivity, electrical propulsion of these micromotors becomes ineffective at solution conductivities exceeding ≈0.3 mS cm-1 . Here, JP cargo manipulation and transport capabilities to conductive near-physiological (<6 mS cm-1 ) solutions are extended successfully by combining magnetic field-based micromotor propulsion and navigation with DEP-based manipulation of various synthetic and biological cargos. Combination of a rotating magnetic field and electric field results in enhanced micromotor mobility and steering control through tuning of the electric field frequency. In addition, the micromotor's ability of identifying apoptotic cell among viable and necrotic cells based on their dielectrophoretic difference is demonstrated, thus, enabling to analyze the apoptotic status in the single-cell samples for drug discovery, cell therapeutics, and immunotherapy. The ability to trap and transport live cells towards regions containing doxorubicin-loaded liposomes is also demonstrated. This hybrid micromotor approach for label-free trapping, transporting, and sensing of selected cells within conductive solutions opens new opportunities in drug delivery and single-cell analysis, where close-to-physiological media conditions are necessary.

Abstract
The remarkable efficiency and dynamics of micromachines in living organisms have inspired researchers to make artificial microrobots for targeted drug delivery, chemical sensing, cargo transport, and waste remediation applications. While several self- and directed-propulsion mechanisms have been discovered, the phoretic force has to be generated via either asymmetric surface functionalization or sophisticated geometric design of microrobots. As a result, many symmetric structures assembled from isotropic colloids are ruled out as viable microrobot possibilities. Here, we propose to utilize orientation control to actuate axially symmetric micro-objects with homogeneous surface properties, such as linear chains assembled from superparamagnetic microspheres. We demonstrate that the fore-and-aft symmetry of a horizontal chain can be broken by tilting it with an angle relative to the substrate under a two-dimensional magnetic field. A superimposed alternating current electric field propels the tilted chains. Our experiments and numerical simulation confirm that the electrohydrodynamic flow along the electrode is unbalanced surrounding the tilted chain, generating hydrodynamic stresses that both propel the chain and reorient it slightly toward the substrate. Our work takes advantage of external fields, where the magnetic field, as a driving wheel and brake, controls chain orientation and direction, while the electric field, as an engine, provides power for locomotion. Without the need to create complex-shaped micromotors with intricate building blocks, our work reveals a propulsion mechanism that breaks the symmetry of hydrodynamic flow by manipulating the orientation of a microscopic object.
