From disorder to order: A dynamic approach to mesophase formation in soft sphere model

This study explores the dynamics of self-assembly and mesophase formation through molecular dynamics simulations of hexagonal and lamellar systems using a simplified coarse-grained model. We focus on characterizing the order-disorder transitions driven by temperature variations and emphasize the often overlooked disordered regime, which serves as a precursor to periodic mesoscale ordering. Our findings not only underscore the morphological richness of the disordered regime, comparable to that of its periodic counterparts, but also reveal the presence of clustering regimes within isotropic phases, thus corroborating prior experimental and theoretical observations. By employing the dynamic correlation coefficient, this work introduces a novel approach to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of mesophase formation, providing new insights into the complex dynamics of self-assembly.

The influence of molecular shape on glass-forming behavior in a minimalist trimer model

In this study, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to probe the influence of molecular morphological changes on the dynamic behavior of a model consisting of trimer molecules. This model, comprising a chain of three particles, facilitates the exploration of variations in the internal angle between these particles. Our findings highlight the significant impact of molecular conformation: systems with more linear conformations, characterized by larger internal angles, exhibit relaxation times several orders of magnitude greater than their counterparts with smaller internal angles. Furthermore, we delve into the role of angular interaction rigidity, uncovering a pronounced deceleration in dynamics and an increase in dynamic heterogeneity as rigidity escalates. This model not only provides insights into azobenzene-type systems but also sets the stage for subsequent research into the microscopic nuances of related systems, with potential extensions to composite systems.

Does Viscosity Decoupling Guarantee Dynamic Heterogeneity? A Clue through an Excitation and Emission Wavelength-Dependent Time-Resolved Fluorescence Anisotropy Study

Traditionally, deviation from Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) relation in terms of viscosity dependence of medium dynamics, i.e., τ x ∝ ( η T ) p with p ≠ 1, is taken as a signature of dynamic heterogeneity. However, it does not guarantee medium heterogeneity, as the decoupling may also originate from the deviation of the basic assumption of SED. Here, we developed a method to find a stronger relation between viscosity decoupling (p ≠ 1) and dynamic heterogeneity in terms of rotational motion. Our approach exploited the fact that in heterogeneous media, a solvatochromic probe will be solvated to a different extent at different microdomains (subpopulations), and photoselection of these subpopulations can be achieved by excitation or emission wavelength-dependent measurements. We hypothesized that the dynamics of a homogeneous system might show viscosity decoupling, but the extent of decoupling at different excitations (or at different emissions) should not be different. On the other hand, in a heterogeneous medium, this extent of viscosity decoupling (p-value) should be different at different excitations (or at different emissions). As proof of concept, we investigated three versatile solvent media: squalane (viscous molecular liquid), 1-ethyle-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate ionic liquid (IL), and [0.78 acetamide + 0.22 LiNO3] deep eutectic solvent (DES). We found that squalane is homogeneous, although it shows fractional viscosity dependence (p ≠ 1). Interestingly, mild heterogeneity in IL and significant heterogeneity in the DES were observed. Overall, we conclude that the difference in the p-value as a function of excitation (or emission) wavelength-dependent might be a superior way for the detection of dynamic heterogeneity.

Molecular rotors to probe the local viscosity of a polymer glass

We investigate the local viscosity of a polymer glass around its glass transition temperature using environment-sensitive fluorescent molecular rotors embedded in the polymer matrix. The rotors' fluorescence depends on the local viscosity, and measuring the fluorescence intensity and lifetime of the probe therefore allows to measure the local free volume in the polymer glass when going through the glass transition. This also allows us to study the local viscosity and free volume when the polymer film is put under an external stress. We find that the film does not flow homogeneously, but undergoes shear banding that is visible as a spatially varying free volume and viscosity.

Averaging Local Structure to Predict the Dynamic Propensity in Supercooled Liquids

Predicting the local dynamics of supercooled liquids based purely on local structure is a key challenge in our quest for understanding glassy materials. Recent years have seen an explosion of methods for making such a prediction, often via the application of increasingly complex machine learning techniques. The best predictions so far have involved so-called Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) whose accuracy comes at a cost of models that involve on the order of 10^{5} fit parameters. In this Letter, we propose that the key structural ingredient to the GNN method is its ability to consider not only the local structure around a central particle, but also averaged structural features centered around nearby particles. We demonstrate that this insight can be exploited to design a significantly more efficient model that provides essentially the same predictive power at a fraction of the computational complexity (approximately 1000 fit parameters), and demonstrate its success by fitting the dynamic propensity of Kob-Andersen and binary hard-sphere mixtures. We then use this to make predictions regarding the importance of radial and angular descriptors in the dynamics of both models.
