Porous chitosan/partially reduced graphene oxide/diatomite composite as an efficient adsorbent for quantitative colorimetric detection of pesticides in a complex matrix

Self-assembled C-Ag hybrid nanoparticle on nanoporous GaN enabled ultra-high enhancement factor SERS sensor for sensitive thiram detection

Considering pesticide residues cause significant harm to public health and the environment, developing a simple, sensitive, and reliable approach to pesticide residue detection to address this issue is necessary. In this study, an ultrasensitive and reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor was developed using cetylpyridinium chloride as a protecting and reducing agent for the in situ synthesis and self-assembly of C-Ag nanoparticles on nanoporous GaN for the quantitative detection of thiram. A systematic investigation of the performance of the SERS sensor revealed that the SERS sensor delivered a limit of detection (LOD) of 10-14 M and an enhancement factor of up to 1.80 × 1011 with reasonable uniformity and reproducibility, with the stability of the SERS sensor demonstrated via long-term storage for up to 22 weeks in air. The enhancement mechanism of the SERS sensor was verified using a finite-difference time-domain simulation. The SERS sensor successfully detected thiram in real samples with an LOD of 10-10 M. Hence, this study provides an effective platform for monitoring food safety and the environment.

MOF-based Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme for colorimetric detection of thiophanate-methyl based on analyte-enhanced sensing mechanism

Silver nanoparticles supported on metal-organic framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co3O4 nanostructures (Ag NPs/Co3O4) were synthesized via a facile in situ reduction strategy. The resulting materials exhibited pH-switchable peroxidase/catalase-like catalytic activity. Ag NP doping greatly enhanced the catalytic activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 towards 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation and H2O2 decomposition which were 59 times (A652 of oxTMB) and 3 times (A240 of H2O2) higher than that of ZIF-67, respectively. Excitingly, thiophanate-methyl (TM) further enhanced the peroxidase-like activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme due to the formation of Ag(I) species in TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 and generation of more radicals resulting from strong interaction between Ag NPs and TM. The TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme exhibited lower Km and higher Vmax values towards H2O2 when compared with Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme. A simple, bioelement-free colorimetric TM detection method based on Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme via analyte-enhanced sensing strategy was successfully established with high sensitivity and selectivity. Our study demonstrated that hybrid noble metal NPs/MOF-based nanozyme can be a class of promising artificial nanozyme in environmental and food safety applications.

Chitosan nanoplatforms in agriculture for multi-potential applications - Adsorption/removal, sustained release, sensing of pollutants & delivering their alternatives - A comprehensive review

An increase in the global population has led to an increment in the food consumption, which has demanded high food production. To meet the production demands, different techniques and technologies are adopted in agriculture the past 70 years, where utilization of the industry-manufactured/synthetic pesticides (SPTCs - e.g., herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, nematicides, acaricides, avicides, and so on) is one of them. However, it has been later revealed that the usage of SPTCs has negatively impacted the environment - especially water and soil, and also agricultural products - mainly foods. Though preventive measures are taken by government agencies, still the utilization rate of SPTCs is high, and consequently, their maximum residual limit (MRL) levels in food are above tolerance, which further results in serious health concerns in humans. So, there is an immediate need for decreasing the utilization of the SPTCs by delivering them effectively at reduced levels in agriculture but with the required efficacy. Apart from that, it is mandatory to detect/sense and also to remove them to lessen the environmental pollution, while developing effective alternative techniques/technologies. Among many suitable materials that are developed/idenified, chitosan, a bio-polymer has gained great attention and is comprehensively implemented in all the above-mentioned applications - sensing, delivery and removal, due to their excellent and required properties. Though many works are available, in this work, a special attention is given to chitosan and its derivatives (i.e., chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs))based removal, controlled release and sensing of the SPTCs - specifically herbicides and insecticides. Moreover, the chitosan/CNPs-based protective effects on the in vivo models during/after their exposure to the SPTCs, and the current technologies like clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) as alternatives for SPTCs are also reviewed.

Graphene-magnetite functionalized diatomite for efficient removal of organochlorine pesticides from aquatic environment

A unique composite based on graphene oxide, magnetite, and diatomite was synthetized by eco-friendly dry coating technique for the removal of four toxic organochlorine pesticides from agricultural drainage. The prepared composite was fully characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size analyzer, Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), magnetic susceptibility meter, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET) techniques. The characterization results confirmed the fabrication of a discrete core/shell structured composite possess both adsorptive and magnetic nature. The surface area, pore volume and pore diameter were 23.4 m²/g, 0.0026 cm³/g, and 4.5 nm, respectively. The amenability to use the fabricated composite as an adsorbent for some organochlorine pesticides was investigated under different conditions of concentration, time, pH, and temperature. Batch adsorption experiment showed that 97% removal efficiency was observed for all the studied pesticides with adsorption capacities of 7.78 mg/g after 2 h contact time and at any pH region. The adsorption was exothermic (ΔH < 0), spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), followed pseudo 2nd order kinetics (R² > 0.998), and fitted well to Langmuir's isotherm pattern for all pesticides (R² > 0.98). It is assumed that organochlorine pesticides were initially physisorbed by the graphene nanoplatelets via hydrophobic and π-π interactions along with chemisorption for forming monolayer. Moreover, the pesticides molecules could diffuse in the DMG composite micropores and be trapped in the structural defects. The regeneration of the composite exhibited over 90% removal efficiency even after seven cycles. The fabricated composite was examined to remove organochlorine from a real water sample, the obtained results suggest the possibility to use this composite as an economical, effective and sustainable adsorbent for the treatment of pesticides contaminating water.

Colorimetric Sensors for Chemical and Biological Sensing Applications

Colorimetric sensors have been widely used to detect numerous analytes due to their cost-effectiveness, high sensitivity and specificity, and clear visibility, even with the naked eye. In recent years, the emergence of advanced nanomaterials has greatly improved the development of colorimetric sensors. This review focuses on the recent (from the years 2015 to 2022) advances in the design, fabrication, and applications of colorimetric sensors. First, the classification and sensing mechanisms of colorimetric sensors are briefly described, and the design of colorimetric sensors based on several typical nanomaterials, including graphene and its derivatives, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, DNA nanomaterials, quantum dots, and some other materials are discussed. Then the applications, especially for the detection of metallic and non-metallic ions, proteins, small molecules, gas, virus and bacteria, and DNA/RNA are summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and future trends in the development of colorimetric sensors are also discussed.

Simple and sensitive determination of sulfites in Chinese herbal teas by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Sulfites are used widely in food and beverage production to prevent browning or oxidation. However, the overingestion of sulfites is harmful to human health and may cause medical complications. Chinese herbal teas have been widely consumed for centuries. However, sulfite levels in Chinese herbal teas are rarely investigated and reported. Here, we present a simple, sensitive, and quantitative method to determine sulfites in Chinese herbal teas using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) coupled with dispersive solid phase extraction. The method utilized a SeQuant ZIC-HILIC column for separation, and the optimal gradient eluents consisted of acetonitrile and aqueous solution with 0.1% acetic acid and 10 mM ammonium acetate. Porous chitosan/partially reduced graphene oxide/diatomite (CS/prGO/DM) composites were used as efficient dispersive solid phase extraction adsorbents for sample preparation. Several parameters were investigated during the extraction process, including sample-to-extraction solvent volume ratios, the extraction procedure and dosage of the adsorbent. Under the optimum conditions, the developed method gave a good determination coefficient (r² > 0.99), low detection limits (0.51-12.1 μg kg^-1) and high recoveries in the range of 83.8-102.7% at different spiked levels. The method has the great advantages of being time saving, good reproducibility and much lower detection limits when compared to titration methods. The method was further applied to analyze real herbal tea samples collected from the local market, demonstrating that our developed method is robust and useful for determining sulfites in practical application.

A Critical Review of Analytical Applications of Chitosan as a Sustainable Chemical with Functions Galore

Biomass and biowastes stand as sustainable and cost-effective environmentally benign alternative feedstock. Chitosan is a biocompatible, bioactive, and biodegradable biopolymer derived from chitin to achieve eight aspects out of the 12 green chemistry principles. Chitosan got significant attention in several fields including chemical analysis, in addition to chemical functionally, which enabled its use as adsorbent and its structural crosslinking using various crosslinkers. The physicochemical, technological, and optical properties of chitosan have been extensively exploited in analysis. Mainly, deacetylation degree and molecular weight are controlling its properties and hence controlling its functions. This review presents a structure, properties, and functions relationships of chitosan. It also aims to provide an overview of the different functions that chitosan can serve in each analytical technique such as supporting matrix, catalyst…etc. The contribution of chitosan in improving the ecological performance is discussed in each technique.

Diatom biosilica in plasmonics: applications in sensing, diagnostics and therapeutics [Invited]

Several living organisms are able to synthesize complex nanostructures provided with peculiar physical and chemical properties by means of finely-tuned, genetically controlled biomineralization processes. Frustules, in particular, are micro- and nano-structured silica shells produced by ubiquitous diatom microalgae, whose optical properties have been recently exploited in photonics, solar energy harvesting, and biosensing. Metallization of diatom biosilica, both in the shape of intact frustules or diatomite particles, can trigger plasmonic effects that in turn can find application in high-sensitive detection platforms, allowing to obtain effective nanosensors at low cost and on a large scale. The aim of the present review article is to provide a wide, complete overview on the main metallization techniques applied to diatom biosilica and on the principal applications of diatom-based plasmonic devices mainly but not exclusively in the fields of biochemical sensing, diagnostics and therapeutics.

Bioinspired laccase-mimicking catalyst for on-site monitoring of thiram in paper-based colorimetric platform

A long-standing goal has been to create artificial enzymes with natural enzyme-like catalytic activity. Herein, a laccase-mimicking catalyst (GSH-Cu) is designed by simulating the copper active sites and spatial amino acid microenvironment of natural enzymes. In particular, the engineered GSH-Cu shows a catalytic function that conforms to Michaelis-Menten kinetics of natural laccase. The high catalytic activity of GSH-Cu can be easily inhibited by thiram through surface passivation to produce copper nanoparticles. We demonstrate that the developed GSH-Cu with high stability and recyclability can be used to fabricate effective colorimetric sensor for sensitive detection of thiram. The resulting absorption intensity can be employed to quantify thiram in the range of 2.5-250 ng mL^-1, which meets the detection requirement in fruit. Bestowed with the feasibility analysis of colorimetric output, a portable platform is designed by integrating GSH-Cu based test paper with a conventional smartphone for conveniently on-site quantified thiram. The proposed strategy about engineering enzyme-mimicking catalysts with excellent catalytic performance will open avenues for boosting the sensing application.

Optimisation of a gold nanoparticle-based aptasensor integrated with image processing for the colorimetric detection of acephate using response surface methodology

Acephate (Ac) is an organophosphate (OP) compound, which is able to inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase. Thus, the aim of this study was to optimize the detection of Ac using a thiolated acephate binding aptamer-citrate capped gold nanoparticle (TABA-Cit-AuNP) sensor that also incorporated an image processing technique. The effects of independent variables, such as the incubation period of TABA-Cit-AuNPs (3-24 h) for binding TABA to Cit-AuNPs, the concentration of phosphate buffer saline (PBS) (0.001-0.01 M), the concentration of thiolated acephate binding aptamer (TABA) (50-200 nM), and the concentration of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) (1-300 mM) were investigated. A quadratic model was developed using a central composite design (CCD) from response surface methodology (RSM) to predict the sensing response to Ac. The optimum conditions such as the concentration of PBS (0.01 M), the concentration of TABA (200 nM), the incubation period of TABA-Cit-AuNPs (3 h), and the concentration of MgSO4 (1 mM) were used to produce a TABA-Cit-AuNPs sensor for the detection of Ac. Under optimal conditions, this sensor showed a detection ranging from 0.01 to 2.73 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 μM. Real sample analysis demonstrated this aptasensor as a good analytical method to detect Ac.
