Extraction of curcumin from turmeric residue (Curcuma longa L.) using deep eutectic solvents and surfactant solvents

Edible oil-based switchable-hydrophilicity solvent liquid-liquid microextraction prior to smartphone digital image colorimetry for the determination of total curcuminoids in food samples

Edible oil-based switchable-hydrophilicity solvent liquid-liquid microextraction was coupled with smartphone digital image colorimetry for the determination of total curcuminoids. Images of the colored extracts were captured in a laboratory-made colorimetric box, which were then split into their red-green-blue channels. Optimum extraction conditions were achieved using 550 μL of almond oil as the extraction solvent and 0.40 M sodium hydroxide for hydrolysis of the oil to the salt of its fatty acid. Phosphoric acid (2.0 mL, 4.0 M) was used as the hydrophilicity-switching trigger, while pH of the sample solution adjusted to 5.50 and extraction time of 1.0 min, were found to be optimum. Optimum detection conditions were achieved at a distance of 7.0 cm from the detection camera, a region of interest of 175 px2, a detection wavelength of 420 nm and 50.0% brightness of the light source. The limit of detection was found to be 0.020 μg mL-1. A good linearity was achieved as indicated by coefficients of determination above 0.9965. The proposed method was used for the determination of total curcuminoids in tea and turmeric samples with percentage relative recoveries of 95.0-105.0% and percentage relative standard deviations below 8.7%.

A green method to extract rutin from Sophora japonica L

Sophora japonica L. contains high levels of rutin, which has great potential for use in pharmaceutical products for the treatment of diseases related to the cardiovascular and circulatory systems. We proposed a method of extracting rutin from S. japonica by using a green solvent.•Green deep eutectic solvents (DESs) of choline chloride and ethylene glycol (ChCl-Eth) showed the highest extraction efficiency of rutin from S. japonica.•Under optimal conditions, the extraction yield of ChCl-Eth was 1.34 times higher than that of methanol as solvent.•Rutin was recovered from the DES extracts using water as the antisolvent with a high recovery yield, and the DESs of ChCl-Eth could be productively recovered and reused at least 3 times.

Ultrasonic extraction and purification of scutellarin from Erigerontis Herba using deep eutectic solvent

Nowadays, deep eutectic solvent (DES) was widely used in the extraction of bioactive in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as an alternative to organic solvents. While as, it is still a challenge for the removal of DES solvents and recovery of the extracted product. In this study, a simple, efficient and green technique of preparing scutellarin from Erigerontis Herba(EH) was proposed, combining ultrasonic assisted-DES extraction with anti-solvent purification. Firstly, different types of DES were prepared and studied for their abilities to extract scutellarin from EH. DES composed of choline chloride and acetamide (1:4 mol/mol) with 30% water obtained the highest extraction yield. Anti-solvent was proved as an efficient method to recover scutellarin from the DES extract with a content of purification up to 71.2%. Moreover, microscopic structural analysis was carried out to investigate the extract process and explain the extraction principle. Furthermore, the antioxidative activities of the DES extracts were evaluated, indicated that the bioactive property of scutellarin were still remained by using DES as the extraction solvent. In conclusion, the proposed simple and green ultrasonic assisted DES extraction method will serve as an effective alternative strategy to extract bioactive compounds from TCM.

Ionic liquid as hydrogen bond acceptor in the extraction of nutritional natural products

In-depth studies of the extraction mechanism using deep eutectic solvents (DES), especially extraction through the formation of a deep eutectic system (DESys), revealed commonalities between the DES- and ionic liquids (IL)-based extraction systems. New applications of ILs and DES for extraction of nutritional natural products were presented. In this study, the extraction behavior of choline chloride (ChCl) and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([HMIm][Cl]) in DES and IL, respectively, in mechanochemical extraction of target compounds from Moringa oleifera leaves was systematically studied. The results suggested that both extraction methods were based on the formation of a DESys, either a normal DESys or an IL DESys. Considering the DESys-based one-step extraction improves the extraction efficiency and reduces the preparation time, the same idea can be used in IL for performance improvement. By formation of a new IL deep eutectic system based on hydrogen bond interaction in extraction, similar improvement was obtained.

Bioactive Diarylpentanoids: Insights into the Biological Effects beyond Antitumor Activity and Structure-Activity Relationships

Diarylpentanoids, a class of natural products and their synthetic analogs which are structurally related to chalcones, have gained increasing attention due to their wide array of biological activities, including antitumor, anti-infective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-hyperuricemic, and neuroprotective properties. Previously, we reviewed diarylpentanoids with promising antitumor activity. However, in view of the wide range of biological activities described for this class of compounds, the purpose of this review is to provide a more detailed overview of the synthetic bioactive diarylpentanoids that have been described over the last two decades, beyond simply their antitumor effects. A total of 745 compounds were found, highlighting the main synthetic methodologies used in their synthesis as well as the structure-activity relationship studies and structural features for all activities reported. Collectively, this review highlights the diarylpentanoid scaffold as a promising starting point for the development of new therapeutic agents.

Sustainable Food Systems: The Case of Functional Compounds towards the Development of Clean Label Food Products

The addition of natural components with functional properties in novel food formulations confers one of the main challenges that the modern food industry is called to face. New EU directives and the global turn to circular economy models are also pressing the agro-industrial sector to adopt cradle-to-cradle approaches for their by-products and waste streams. This review aims to present the concept of “sustainable functional compounds”, emphasizing on some main bioactive compounds that could be recovered or biotechnologically produced from renewable resources. Herein, and in view of their efficient and “greener” production and extraction, emerging technologies, together with their possible advantages or drawbacks, are presented and discussed. Μodern examples of novel, clean label food products that are composed of sustainable functional compounds are summarized. Finally, some action plans towards the establishment of sustainable food systems are suggested.
