Asymmetrically strained hcp rhodium sublattice stabilized by 1D covalent boron chains as an efficient electrocatalyst

Lattice engineering of noble metal-based nanomaterials via metal-nonmetal interactions for catalytic applications

Noble metal-based nanomaterials possess outstanding catalytic properties in various chemical reactions. However, the increasing cost of noble metals severely hinders their large-scale applications. A cost-effective strategy is incorporating noble metals with light nonmetal elements (e.g., H, B, C, N, P and S) to form noble metal-based nanocompounds, which can not only reduce the noble metal content, but also promote their catalytic performances by tuning their crystal lattices and introducing additional active sites. In this review, we present a concise overview of the recent advancements in the preparation and application of various kinds of noble metal-light nonmetal binary nanocompounds. Besides introducing synthetic strategies, we focus on the effects of introducing light nonmetal elements on the lattice structures of noble metals and highlight notable progress in the lattice strain engineering of representative core-shell nanostructures derived from these nanocompounds. In the meantime, the catalytic applications of the light element-incorporated noble metal-based nanomaterials are discussed. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives in the development of noble metal-nonmetal based nanomaterials.

Metal Borides as Excellent Co-Catalysts for Boosted and Long-Lasting Fenton-like Reaction: Dual Co-Catalytic Centers of Metal and Boron

The continuous electron supply for oxidant decomposition-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is the main contributor for the long-standing micropollutant oxidation in the iron-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, as a new class of co-catalysts, metal borides with dual active sites and preeminent conductive performance can effectively overcome the inherent drawback of Fenton-like reactions by steadily donating electrons to inactive Fe(III). Among the metal borides, tungsten boride (WB) exhibits a significant co-catalytic performance run ahead of common heterogeneous co-catalysts and exceptionally high stability. Based on qualitative and semi-quantitative tests, the hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, and iron(IV)-oxo complex are all produced in the WB/Fe(III)/PDS system and Fe(IV)-induced methyl phenyl sulfoxide decomposition is up to 72%. Moreover, the production efficiency of ROS and relative proportions of radical and nonradical pathways change with various experimental conditions (dosages of PDS, WB, and solution pH) and water matrices. The rate-determining step of Fe(II) regeneration is greatly accelerated resulting from the synergetic effect between exposed metallic reactive sites and nonmetallic boron with reductive properties of WB. In addition, the self-dissolution of surface tungsten oxide and boron oxide leads to a renovated surface for sustainable Fe(III) reduction in long-term operations. Our discovery provides an efficient and sustainable strategy in the field of enhanced AOPs for water remediation.

Emerging Heterogeneous Supports for Efficient Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis plays a fundamental role in many fields, such as metallurgy, medicine, chemical industry, and energy conversion. Anchoring active electrocatalysts with controllable loading and uniform dispersion onto suitable supports has become an attractive topic. This is because the supports can not only have the potential to improve catalytic activity and stability through the interaction between support and catalytic center, but also can reduce precious metal consumption by improving atomic utilization. Herein, recent theoretical and experimental progresses concerning the development of supports to anchor electrocatalytic materials are first reviewed. Next, their controllable syntheses, characterization techniques, metal-support electronic interactions, and structure-performance relationships are presented. Some representative carbon supports and non-carbonaceous supports, as well as recently reported star supports such as 2D supports, single atom catalysts, and self-supported catalysts are also summarized. In addition, the significant role of support in stabilizing and regulating catalytic active sites is particularly emphasized. Finally, challenges, opportunities, key problems, and further promising solutions for supported catalysts are proposed.

Synergistic regulation of coordination sites of Co3O4 by selective doping for efficient water oxidation

Herein, we designed selectively doped Co₃O₄ to explore the effect of coordination sites, in which the octahedral and tetrahedral sites were modulated by simple doping with ions of different radiuses (Al and In). Compared to octahedral regulation, the synergistic regulation of both tetrahedral sites and octahedral sites can induce a higher intrinsic activity, which is because they possess improved electrical conductivity and facilitate the formation of highly active Co³⁺/Co⁴⁺ species during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER).

Crystal phase-selective synthesis of intermetallic palladium borides and their phase-regulated (electro)catalytic properties

Three Pd–B intermetallics, namely, Pd6B, Pd5B2 and Pd2B, are synthesized, and their catalytic activities toward electrochemical water splitting and Suzuki coupling reactions are strongly associated with the Pd(d)–B(s,p) orbital hybridization.

Nanostructured Metal Borides for Energy-Related Electrocatalysis: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

The discovery of durable, active, and affordable electrocatalysts for energy-related catalytic applications plays a crucial role in the advancement of energy conversion and storage technologies to achieve a sustainable energy future. Transition metal borides (TMBs), with variable compositions and structures, present a number of interesting features including coordinated electronic structures, high conductivity, abundant natural reserves, and configurable physicochemical properties. Therefore, TMBs provide a wide range of opportunities for the development of multifunctional catalysts with high performance and long durability. This review first summarizes the typical structural and electronic features of TMBs. Subsequently, the various synthetic methods used thus far to prepare nanostructured TMBs are listed. Furthermore, advances in emerging TMB-catalyzed reactions (both theoretical and experimental) are highlighted, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction, the oxygen reduction reaction, the carbon dioxide reduction reaction, the nitrogen reduction reaction, the methanol oxidation reaction, and the formic acid oxidation reaction. Finally, challenges facing the development of TMB electrocatalysts are discussed, with focus on synthesis and energy-related catalytic applications, and some potential strategies/perspectives are suggested as well, which will profit the design of more efficient TMB materials for application in future energy conversion and storage devices.
