Tuning the shape and crystal phase of TiO2 nanoparticles for catalysis

Fabrication of porous and defect-rich BiOI/MWCNTs photocatalyst by Ar plasma-etching for emerging pollutants degradation

Carbon material modification and defect engineering are indispensable for bolstering the photocatalytic effectiveness of bismuth halide oxide (BiOX). In this study, a novel porous and defect-rich Ar-CB-2 photocatalyst was synthesized for emerging pollutants degradation. Leveraging the interfacial coupling effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), we expanded the absorption spectrum of BiOI nanosheets and significantly suppressed the recombination of charge carriers. Introducing defects via Argon (Ar) plasma-etching further bolstered the adsorption efficacy and electron transfer properties of photocatalyst. In comparison to the pristine BiOI and CB-2, the Ar-CB-2 photocatalyst demonstrated superior photodegradation efficiency, with the first-order reaction rates for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA) increasing by 2.83 and 4.53 times, respectively. Further probe experiments revealed that the steady-state concentrations of ·O2- and 1O2 in the Ar-CB-2/light system were enhanced by a factor of 1.67 and 1.28 compared to CB-2/light system. This result confirmed that the porous and defect-rich structure of Ar-CB-2 inhibited electron-hole recombination and boosted photocatalyst-oxygen interaction, swiftly transforming O2 into active oxygen species, thus accelerating their production. Furthermore, the possible degradation pathways for TC and BPA in the Ar-CB-2/light system were predicted. Overall, these findings offered a groundbreaking approach to the development of highly effective photocatalysts, capable of swiftly breaking down emerging pollutants.

Significance of Epitaxial Growth of PtO2 on Rutile TiO2 for Pt/TiO2 Catalysts

TiO2-supported Pt species have been widely applied in numerous critical reactions involving photo-, thermo-, and electrochemical-catalysis for decades. Manipulation of the state of the Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts is crucial for fine-tuning their catalytic performance. Here, we report an interesting discovery showing the epitaxial growth of PtO2 atomic layers on rutile TiO2, potentially allowing control of the states of active Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts. The presence of PtO2 atomic layers could modulate the geometric configuration and electronic state of the Pt species under reduction conditions, resulting in a spread of the particle shape and obtaining a Pt/PtO2/TiO2 structure with more positive valence of Pt species. As a result, such a catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction, while also promoting the thermocatalytic CO oxidation, surpassing the performance of the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with no epitaxial structure. This novel epitaxial growth of the PtO2 structure on rutile TiO2 in Pt/TiO2 catalysts shows its potential in the rational design of highly active and economical catalysts toward diverse catalytic reactions.

Distribution of Pt single atom coordination environments on anatase TiO2 supports controls reactivity

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer efficient metal utilization and distinct reactivity compared to supported metal nanoparticles. Structure-function relationships for SACs often assume that active sites have uniform coordination environments at particular binding sites on support surfaces. Here, we investigate the distribution of coordination environments of Pt SAs dispersed on shape-controlled anatase TiO2 supports specifically exposing (001) and (101) surfaces. Pt SAs on (101) are found on the surface, consistent with existing structural models, whereas those on (001) are beneath the surface after calcination. Pt SAs under (001) surfaces exhibit lower reactivity for CO oxidation than those on (101) surfaces due to their limited accessibility to gas phase species. Pt SAs deposited on commercial-TiO2 are found both at the surface and in the bulk, posing challenges to structure-function relationship development. This study highlights heterogeneity in SA coordination environments on oxide supports, emphasizing a previously overlooked consideration in the design of SACs.

Modification engineering of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts

Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysts have gained increasing attention for their versatile applications in organic degradation, hydrogen production, air purification, and CO2 reduction. Various TiO2-based heterojunction structures, including type I, type II, Schottky junction, Z-scheme, and S-scheme, have been extensively studied. The current research frontier is centered on the engineering modifications of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts, such as defect engineering, morphological engineering, crystal phase/facet engineering, and multijunction engineering. These modifications enhance carrier transport, separation, and light absorption, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Remarkably, this aspect has been less addressed in existing reviews. This review aims to fill this gap by focusing on the engineering modifications of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts. We delve into specific topics like oxygen vacancies, n-p homojunctions, and double defects. The review also systematically discusses the applications of multidimensional heterojunctions and examines carrier transport pathways in heterophase/facet junctions and their interactions with heterojunctions. A comprehensive summary of multijunction systems, including multi-Schottky junctions, semiconductor-based heterojunction-attached Schottky junctions, and multisemiconductor-based heterojunctions, is presented. Lastly, we outline future perspectives in this promising research field. This paper will assist researchers in constructing more efficient TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts.

Microflowery, Microspherical, and Fan-Shaped TiO2 Crystals via Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Nanorods with Exposed Specific Crystal Facets and Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

In this paper, khaki titanium dioxide (TiO2) crystals via hierarchical self-assembly of nanorods with different morphologies and specific exposed crystal facets were prepared for the first time by using a TiCl3 treatment process in the presence and absence of morphology-controlling agents. The crystal structure, morphology, microstructure, specific surface area, and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs of the synthesized TiO2 crystals were characterized. The photocatalytic and recycled performances of the synthesized TiO2 crystals in the presence of shape-controlling agents, such as ammonium sulfate (AS), ammonium carbonate (AC), and urea, and the absence of shape-controlling agents (the obtained TiO2 crystals were expressed as AS-TiO2, AC-TiO2, urea-TiO2, and No-TiO2, respectively) were evaluated and compared with the commercial TiO2 (CM-TiO2) crystals. The AS-TiO2 microspheres with exposed uncertain facets exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue solution, which can be attributed to the combined effect of the anatase phase structure, relatively larger specific surface area, and the effective separation of the photogenerated electron-holes.

Phase-Selective Synthesis of Anatase and Rutile TiO2 Nanocrystals and Their Impacts on Grapevine Leaves: Accumulation of Mineral Nutrients and Triggering the Plant Defense

Titanium dioxide nanocrystals (TiO₂ NCs), through their photocatalytic activity, are able to generate charge carriers and induce the formation of various reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the presence of O₂ and H₂O. This special feature makes TiO₂ an important and promising material in several industrial applications. Under appropriate antioxidant balancing, the presence of ROS is crucial in plant growth and development, therefore, the regulated ROS production through the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ NCs may be also exploited in the agricultural sector. However, the effects of TiO₂ NCs on plants are not fully understood and/or phase-pure TiO₂ NCs are rarely used in plant experiments. In this work, we present a phase-selective synthesis of TiO₂ NCs with anatase and rutile crystal phases. The nanomaterials obtained were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). In field experiments, Vitis vinifera cv. Cabernet Sauvignon leaves developed under natural sunlight were treated with aqueous dispersions of TiO₂ NCs at concentrations of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 w/v%. The effect of the applied nanocrystals was characterized via leaf photochemistry, mineral nutrient contents, and pyridoxine levels. We found that stress responses of grapevine to anatase and rutile NCs treatments are different, which can be related to the different ROS profiles of the two polymorphs. Our results indicate that TiO₂ NCs may be utilized not only for direct pathogen inactivation but also for eliciting plant defense mechanisms.

Brookite positively affects solar photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and electrochemical applications by stabilizing photogenerated e−/h+ pairs. Brookite-related heterojunctions, cus Ti atoms, surface acidity and redox behaviour are crucial aspects.
