A mechanism for ageing in a deeply supercooled molecular glass

Hidden singularities in spontaneously polarized molecular solids

Films of dipolar molecules formed by physical vapor deposition are, in general, spontaneously polarized, with implications ranging from electron transfer in molecular optoelectronic devices to the properties of astrochemical ices in the interstellar medium. Polarization arises from dipole orientation, which should intuitively decrease with increasing deposition temperature, T. However, it is experimentally found that minimum or maximum values in polarization vs T may be observed for cis-methyl formate, 1-propanol, and ammonia. A continuous analytic form of polarization vs T is developed, which has the property that it is not differentiable at all T. The minima and maxima in polarization vs T are marked by singularities in the differential of this analytic form. This exotic behavior is presently unique to films of dipolar species and has not been reported, for example, in the related magnetic phases of spin glasses.

GenX 3: the latest generation of an established tool

Improvements to the GenX program are discussed, including performance, model building and error analysis.

Since its publication more than 15 years ago the GenX software has been continuously developed and has established itself as a standard package for analyzing X-ray and neutron reflectometry data. The evolution of the software during the last two major revisions is reported here. This includes a simplified model builder for beginners, simple samples, additional sample models, statistical error analysis and the use of just-in-time compilation modules for the reflectometry kernel to achieve higher performance. In addition, the influence of experimental errors on the reflectivity curve is discussed, and new features are described that allow the user to include these in the error statistics to improve the fitting and uncertainty estimation.

Giant Enhancement of Optical Second Harmonic in Poled Glasses by Cold Repoling

For the first time, we demonstrated that additional poling at room temperature (cold repoling) of a soda-lime glass thermally poled in open anode configuration causes an increase of the optical second harmonic signal by more than an order of magnitude. Performed experiments allow relating this increase in the optical nonlinearity of the glass to the orientation of hydrogenated dipoles in the vicinity of the glass surface. This indicates that both frozen electric field and dipole orientation are responsible for the nonlinearity of thermally poled alkali-containing glasses. Observed dipole orientation in glasses is of interest for molecular physics and electrodynamic studies.

Surface equilibration mechanism controls the molecular packing of glassy molecular semiconductors at organic interfaces

Glasses prepared by physical vapor deposition (PVD) are anisotropic, and the average molecular orientation can be varied significantly by controlling the deposition conditions. While previous work has characterized the average structure of thick PVD glasses, most experiments are not sensitive to the structure near an underlying substrate or interface. Given the profound influence of the substrate on the growth of crystalline or liquid crystalline materials, an underlying substrate might be expected to substantially alter the structure of a PVD glass, and this near-interface structure is important for the function of organic electronic devices prepared by PVD, such as organic light-emitting diodes. To study molecular packing near buried organic-organic interfaces, we prepare superlattice structures (stacks of 5- or 10-nm layers) of organic semiconductors, Alq3 (Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum) and DSA-Ph (1,4-di-[4-(N,N-diphenyl)amino]styrylbenzene), using PVD. Superlattice structures significantly increase the fraction of the films near buried interfaces, thereby allowing for quantitative characterization of interfacial packing. Remarkably, both X-ray scattering and spectroscopic ellipsometry indicate that the substrate exerts a negligible influence on PVD glass structure. Thus, the surface equilibration mechanism previously advanced for thick films can successfully describe PVD glass structure even within the first monolayer of deposition on an organic substrate.

Low temperature aging in a molecular glass: the case of cis-methyl formate

Glassy films of cis-methyl formate show spontaneous dipole orientation on deposition from the vacuum, the so-called 'spontelectric effect', creating surface potentials and electric fields within the films. We follow the decay of these fields, and their accompanying dipole orientation, on the hours timescale at deposition temperatures between 40 K and 55 K. Our data trace the low temperature 'secondary decay' mechanism, at tens of degrees below the glass transition temperature of 90 K. We show that secondary decay is due to molecular rotation, with associated activation energies lying between 0.1 and 0.2 eV. Diffusion is absent, as established from published neutron reflectivity data. Using an analytical model for the spontelectric effect, data are placed on a quantitative footing, showing that angular motion in excess of 50° reproduces the observed values of activation energies. Exploitation of the spontelectric effect is new in the study of glass aging and is shown here to give insight into the elusive processes which take place far from the molecular glass transition temperature.
