Heterogeneous vanadium-catalyzed oxidative cleavage of olefins for sustainable synthesis of carboxylic acids

Heterogeneous V2O5/TiO2-Mediated Photocatalytic Reduction of Nitro Compounds to the Corresponding Amines under Visible Light

The hydrogenation of nitro compounds to their corresponding amines is developed using a heterogeneous and recyclable catalyst (V₂O₅/TiO₂) under irradiation of blue LED (9 W) at ambient temperature. Hydrazine hydrate is used as a reductant and ethanol is used as a solvent, facilitating green, sustainable, low-cost production. The synthesis of 32 (hetero)arylamines and their pharmaceutically relevant molecules (five) are described. Significant features of the protocol include catalyst recyclability, green solvent, ambient temperature, and gram-scale reactions. Among the other aspects studied are ¹H-NMR-assisted reaction progress monitoring, control experiments for mechanistic studies, protocol applications, and recyclability studies. Furthermore, the developed protocol enabled wide functional group tolerance, chemo-selectivity, high yield, and low-cost, sustainable, and environmentally benign synthesis.

Combined effects of the lewis acidity and electric field of proximal redox innocent metal ions on the redox potential of vanadyl Schiff base complexes: an experimental and theoretical study

The reactivity of biological or synthetic metalloenzymes is modulated in the presence of redox innocent Lewis acidic metal ions as they change the redox potential of the redox active metal ions present in the active site of metalloenzymes. To study this effect, we synthesised a mono-nuclear V(IV) complex (VOL, 1) with an N₂O₄ donor bicompartmental ligand, characterized it by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and recorded its cyclic voltammogram in acetonitrile. The CV revealed a reversible redox process for the V(IV)/V(V) couple. The potential of the V(IV)/V(V) couple shifted to a more positive value when equivalent amounts of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺ and Ba²⁺ ions were added separately to its acetonitrile solution, but the extent of shift for Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ was much less than that of the other metal ions. The guest metal ions except Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ were accommodated in the outer compartment of VOL as confirmed by IR and UV-Vis spectral analysis. Single-crystal structural analysis of [(VOL)KPF₆]₂, (1·K) and [(VOL)Ba(ClO₄)₂(H₂O)]_n, (1·Ba) also confirmed the hetero-metallic adduct formation. The correlation of the shift of the V(IV/V) redox potential with the Lewis acidity of respective metal ions deviated appreciably from linearity. DFT calculations suggest that the shift in potential is probably controlled by local electric fields induced by those ions, as indicated by 2D vector electric field maps.

Spongy titanosilicate promotes the catalytic performance and reusability of WO3 in oxidative cleavage of methyl oleate

A tungsten containing catalyst catalyzed oxidative cleavage of methyl oleate (MO) by employing H₂O₂ as an oxidant and is known as an efficient approach for preparing high value-added chemicals, however, the tungsten leaching problem remains unresolved. In this work, a binary catalyst consisting of tungsten oxide (WO₃) and spongy titanosilicate (STS) zeolite is proposed for MO oxidative cleavage. The function of STS in this catalyst is investigated. On the one hand, STS converts MO to 9,10-epoxystearate (MES), which further forms nonyl aldehyde (NA) and methyl azelaaldehydate (MAA) with the catalysis of WO₃. In this way, MO oxidation and hydrolysis that generates unwanted diol product 9,10-dihydroxystearate (MDS) decreases obviously. On the other hand, STS decomposes peroxide and promotes the conversion of soluble peroxotungstate to insoluble polytungstate. Meanwhile, these tungsten species are allowed to precipitate on its surface instead of remaining in the liquid phase owing to its relative large specific area. Therefore, tungsten leaching can be reduced from 37.0% to 1.2%. Due to the cooperation of WO₃ and STS, 94.4% MO conversion and oxidative cleavage product selectivity of 63.1% are achieved, and the WO₃–STS binary catalyst maintains excellent catalytic performance for 8 recycling reactions.
