Efficient homogeneous electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution using a Ni-containing polyoxometalate catalyst

Synergy of {Co(H2O)6}2+ with a Polyoxometalate Leads to Aqueous Homogeneous Hydrogen Evolution: Experiments and Computations

In this work, we have described a polyoxometalate (POM)-based inexpensive and easily synthesizable compound [Co(H2O)6]2[{K(H2O)}2V10O28]·2H2O (1), which exhibits electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in its aqueous solution without its decomposition (or electrodeposition), acting as a rare homogeneous electrocatalyst. Even though the compound [Co(H2O)6]2[{K(H2O)}2V10O28]·2H2O (1) (soluble in water) shows electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity because of the Coulombic attraction, including H-bonding interactions, between the [Co(H2O)6]2+ cationic species and [{K(H2O)}2V10O28]4-anionic species, the individual homogeneous solutions of [V10O28]6- (source: Na6[V10O28]·18H2O) and [Co(H2O)6]2+ (source: CoCl2·6H2O) do not show any electrocatalytic HER activity. We have thus established that the synergy of [V10O28]6- with [Co(H2O)6]2+ in crystal matrix as well as in the aqueous solution of 1 makes the compound 1 a stable and highly active electrocatalyst for homogeneous HER in an aqueous solution. In order to corroborate these homogeneous HER studies, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to show that decavanadate cluster anion [V10O28]6- interacts with hexa-aqua complex cation [Co(H2O)6]2+ via strong H-bonding interactions, leading to a synergy effect that enables the cobalt center of [Co(H2O)6]2+ to be an active site of HER in the present work.

Polyoxometalate-derived electrocatalysts enabling progress in hydrogen evolution reactions

Platinum-based catalysts exhibit outstanding electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, platinum-based catalysts face significant challenges due to their rarity and high cost. This paper endeavors to shed light on a promising alternative: polyoxometalate (POM)-based catalysts, which possess significant potential for the synthesis of non-noble metal-based catalysts for the HER. Utilizing POMs as raw materials to assemble POM-derived materials, including POM-derived crystalline materials, metal sulfides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, and so on, has emerged as an effective approach for the synthesis of hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts. This approach offers advantages in both stability and electrocatalytic performance. This comprehensive review navigates through latest progress in the assembly strategy and HER performance of POM-based crystal materials, alongside discussion on transition metal compounds derived from POMs, such as carbides, phosphides, and sulfides. Besides, future developments in POM-derived electrocatalyst regulation of the electrochemical HER are prospected.

The rigidity and chelation effect of ligands on the hydrogen evolution reaction catalyzed by Ni(II) complexes

With increasing interest in nickel-based electrocatalysts, three heteroleptic Ni(II) dithiolate complexes with the general formula [Ni(II)L(L')2] (1-3), L = 2-(methylene-1,1'-dithiolato)-5,5'-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione and L' = triphenylphosphine (1), 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (DPPF) (2), and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) (3), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, IR, 1H, and 31P{1H} NMR) as well as the electrochemical method. The molecular structure of complex 2 has also been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of complex 2 reveals a distorted square planar geometry around the nickel metal ion with a NiP2S2 core. The cyclic voltammograms reveal a small difference in the redox properties of complexes (ΔE° = 130 mV) while the difference in the catalytic half-wave potential becomes substantial (ΔEcat/2 = 670 mV) in the presence of 15 mM CF3COOH. The common S^S-dithiolate ligand provides stability, while the rigidity effect of other ligands (DPPE (3) > DPPF (2) > PPh3 (1)) regulates the formation of the transition state, resulting in the NiIII-H intermediate in the order of 1 > 2 > 3. The foot-of-the-wave analysis supports the widely accepted ECEC mechanism for Ni-based complexes with the first protonation step as a rate-determining step. The electrocatalytic proton reduction activity follows in the order of complex 1 > 2 > 3. The comparatively lower overpotential and higher turnover frequency of complex 1 are attributed to the flexibility of the PPh3 ligand, which favours the easy formation of a transition state.

Cerium-Encapsulated SbIII-SeIV-Templating Polyoxotungstate for Electrochemically Sensing Human Multidrug Resistance Gene Segment

A tower-like SbIII-SeIV-templating polyoxotungstate [H2N(CH3)2]12Na7H3[Ce0.5/Na0.5(H2O)5]2[SbSe2W21O75]2·50H2O (1) was synthesized, whose skeleton is assembled from two prolonged lacunary Dawson [SbSe2W21O75]13- units and two [Ce0.5/Na0.5(H2O)5]2+ linkers. The uncommon [SbSe2W21O75]13- unit can be viewed as a combination of one [SeW6O21]2- group grafted onto a trivacant Dawson [SbSeW15O54]11- subunit. The conductive composite 1-Au@rGO containing 1, gold nanoparticles, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was conveniently prepared, using which the 1-Au@rGO-based electrochemical genosensor was constructed for detecting human multidrug resistance gene segment. This work enriches structural types of dual-heteroatom-inserted polyoxometalates and promotes the application of polyoxometalates in genosensors.

Hydroxylated Polyoxometalate with Cu(II)- and Cu(I)-Aqua Complexes: A Bifunctional Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Water Splitting at Neutral pH

A sole inorganic framework material [Li(H2O)4][{CuI(H2O)1.5} {CuII(H2O)3}2{WVI12O36(OH)6}]·N2·H2S·3H2O (1) consisting of a hydroxylated polyoxometalate (POM) anion, {WVI12O36(OH)6}6-, a mixed-valent Cu(II)- and Cu(I)-aqua cationic complex species, [{CuI(H2O)1.5}{CuII(H2O)3}2]5+, a Li(I)-aqua complex cation, and three solvent molecules, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. During its synthesis, the POM cluster anion gets functionalized with six hydroxyl groups, i.e., six WVI-OH groups per cluster unit. Moreover, structural and spectral analyses have shown the presence of H2S and N2 molecules in the concerned crystal lattice, formed from "sulfate-reducing ammonium oxidation (SRAO)". Compound 1 functions as a bifunctional electrocatalyst exhibiting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by water oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by water reduction at the neutral pH. We could identify that the hydroxylated POM anion and copper-aqua complex cations are the functional sites for HER and OER, respectively. The overpotential, required to achieve a current density of 1 mA/cm2 in the case of HER (water reduction), is found to be 443 mV with a Faradaic efficiency of 84% and a turnover frequency of 4.66 s-1. In the case of OER (water oxidation), the overpotential needed to achieve a current density of 1 mA/cm2 is obtained to be 418 mV with a Faradaic efficiency of 80% and turnover frequency of 2.81 s-1. Diverse electrochemical controlled experiments have been performed to conclude that the title POM-based material functions as a true bifunctional catalyst for electrocatalytic HER as well as OER at the neutral pH without catalyst reconstruction.

A comprehensive review on the electrochemical parameters and recent material development of electrochemical water splitting electrocatalysts

Electrochemical splitting of water is an appealing solution for energy storage and conversion to overcome the reliance on depleting fossil fuel reserves and prevent severe deterioration of the global climate. Though there are several fuel cells, hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) fuel cells have zero carbon emissions, and water is the only by-product. Countless researchers worldwide are working on the fundamentals, i.e. the parameters affecting the electrocatalysis of water splitting and electrocatalysts that could improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall simplify the water electrolysis process. Noble metals like platinum for HER and ruthenium and iridium for OER were used earlier; however, being expensive, there are more feasible options than employing these metals for all commercialization. The review discusses the recent developments in metal and metalloid HER and OER electrocatalysts from the s, p and d block elements. The evaluation perspectives for electrocatalysts of electrochemical water splitting are also highlighted.

Fabrication of a polyoxotungstate/metal-organic framework/phosphorus-doped reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode by electrochemical reduction and its electrochemical properties

Hybrid nanocomposites based on polyoxometalates (POMs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and graphene oxide (GO) have a unique set of properties. They have specific properties such as high acidity, oxygen-rich surface, and good redox capability from POMs. In contrast, they do not have weaknesses of POMs such as a low surface area, and high solubility in aqueous media. Herein, a novel organic-inorganic nanohybrid compound based on H3PW12O40 (PW12), a Co-based MOF, and GO was prepared. The prepared hybrid nanocomposite (PW12/MOF/GO) was characterized using different techniques. Then, a PW12/MOF/GO nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated by the drop-casting method and next was dried at room temperature. Then, the PW12/MOF/GO/GCE was subjected to electrochemical reduction at a constant potential of -1.5 V, in 0.1 M H3PO4 solution containing 0.10% w/v PW12/MOF/GO additive. The morphology, electrochemical activity, and stability of the modified electrode (PW12/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE) were studied with FE-SEM coupled with EDS, CV, and amperometry. The obtained results confirmed that the PW12/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE could be effective in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical activity of the PW12/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE due to the desirable microstructure of the electrocatalyst (e.g. high active surface area and homogeneous distribution of the PW12/MOF/P@ERGO), and also the synergistic effect of the blocks, is more than those of PW12/GCE, MOF/GCE, PW12/MOF/GCE, and P@ERGO/GCE. Moreover, the PW12/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE showed an excellent long-term stability under the air atmosphere.

Carbazole-based bis-imidazole ligand-involved synthesis of inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates as electrochemical sensors for detecting bromate and efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of thioether

Considering the potential application on preparing electrode and catalyst materials of inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates, a bis-imidazole ligand with carbazole as a connector, 3,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-9H-carbazole (L), was used for preparing inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates. As a result, three complexes formulated by [NiL₂(Mo₂O₇)] (1), [Cu(H₂O)₂(HL)₂ (β-Mo₈O₂₆)]·H₂O (2) and [Ni₂(H₂O)₄L₂ (CrMo₆(OH)₅O₁₉)]·6H₂O (3) were obtained successfully. Structural analysis indicated that the different polyoxoanions and metal ions showed important influences on the formation of structures. In the presence of Ni²⁺ ions and heptamolybdate, a 2D network constructed from Ni²⁺ ions and L ligands was formed in complex 1, in which the [Mo₄O₁₄]⁴⁻ polyoxoanions were encapsulated. But the use of Cu²⁺ ions led to a 1D chain of complex 2, which was composed of [β-Mo₈O₂₆]⁴⁻ polyoxoanions and mononuclear {CuL₂} units. By utilizing [CrMo₆(OH)₅O₁₉]⁴⁻ as the inorganic building block, complex 3 showed a 2D (4, 4)-connected layer. Complexes 1–3 could be employed as electrode materials for sensing bromate with the limits of detection of 0.315 μM for 1, 0.098 μM for 2 and 0.551 μM for 3. Moreover, these complexes showed efficient catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of thioethers.

Three inorganic–organic hybrid polyoxometalates were prepared using a bis-imidazole ligand featuring carbazole as a connector, exhibiting not only diverse structures, but also good electrochemical sensing activities for bromate, as well as efficient catalytic performances for oxidation of thioether.

Ruthenium nanoparticles supported on S-doped graphene as an efficient HER electrocatalyst

An efficient HER catalyst was prepared by doping graphene and wrapping ruthenium nanoparticles, and its performance is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C.
