In situ growth of MOFs on Ni(OH)2 for efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Advances in Selective Electrochemical Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Produce High-Value Chemicals

The conversion of biomass is a favorable alternative to the fossil energy route to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. As one of the most versatile platform compounds, 5-hydroxymethylfural (HMF) can be transformed to various value-added chemicals via electrolysis combining with renewable energy. Here, the recent advances in electrochemical oxidation of HMF, from reaction mechanism to reactor design are reviewed. First, the reaction mechanism and pathway are summarized systematically. Second, the parameters easy to be ignored are emphasized and discussed. Then, the electrocatalysts are reviewed comprehensively for different products and the reactors are introduced. Finally, future efforts on exploring reaction mechanism, electrocatalysts, and reactor are prospected. This review provides a deeper understanding of mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, the design of electrocatalyst and reactor, which is expected to promote the economical and efficient electrochemical conversion of biomass for industrial applications.

Rational Design of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Electroreduction of CO2 to Hydrocarbons and Carbon Oxygenates

Since CO₂ can be reutilized by using renewable electricity in form of product diversity, electrochemical CO₂ reduction (ECR) is expected to be a burgeoning strategy to tackle environmental problems and the energy crisis. Nevertheless, owing to the limited selectivity and reaction efficiency for a single component product, ECR is still far from a large-scale application. Therefore, designing high performance electrocatalysts is the key objective in CO₂ conversion and utilization. Unlike most other types of electrocatalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have clear, designable, and tunable catalytic active sites and chemical microenvironments, which are highly conducive to establish a clear structure-performance relationship and guide the further design of high-performance electrocatalysts. This Outlook concisely and critically discusses the rational design strategies of MOF catalysts for ECR in terms of reaction selectivity, current density, and catalyst stability, and outlines the prospects for the development of MOF electrocatalysts and industrial applications. In the future, more efforts should be devoted to designing MOF structures with high stability and electronic conductivity besides high activity and selectivity, as well as to develop efficient electrolytic devices suitable for MOF catalysts.

Phosphorus vacancy-engineered Ce-doped CoP nanosheets for the electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

The electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furanedioic acid (FDCA) has received increasing attention. To achieve satisfactory electrooxidation of HMF, the development of an efficient electrocatalyst is particularly critical. Herein, porous Ce-CoP nanosheets integrating Ce doping and P vacancies are designed through a deep eutectic solvent approach, and they allow the excellent electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to FDCA in 1 M KOH electrolyte with 100% HMF conversion, 98% FDCA yield, and a faradaic efficiency of 96.4% at low potential.

Phytate-coordinated nickel foam with enriched NiOOH intermediates for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation

Manipulating the surface reconstruction of Ni-based catalysts to form NiOOH intermediates is crucial for electrooxidation. Herein, we report a phytate coordination-induced enrichment of NiOOH on phytate-coordinated Ni foam, which exhibited high catalytic performance for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electro-oxidation. The HMF oxidation rate of 0.76 mmol h^-1 outperformed the majority of Ni-based catalysts.
