Recent advances in luminescent metal-organic frameworks and their photonic applications

Encapsulation engineering of porous crystalline frameworks for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence

Delayed luminescence (DF), including phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit common and broad application prospects in optoelectronic displays, biological imaging, and encryption. Thus, the combination of delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence is attracting increasing attention. The encapsulation of guest emitters in various host matrices to form host-guest systems has been demonstrated to be an appealing strategy to further enhance and/or modulate their delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Compared with conventional liquid crystals, polymers, and supramolecular matrices, porous crystalline frameworks (PCFs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) can not only overcome shortcomings such as flexibility and disorder but also achieve the ordered encapsulation of guests and long-term stability of chiral structures, providing new promising host platforms for the development of DF and CPL. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and critical summary of the recent progress in host-guest photochemistry via the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, particularly focusing on delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Initially, the general principle of phosphorescence, TADF and CPL, the combination of DF and CPL, and energy transfer processes between host and guests are introduced. Subsequently, we comprehensively discuss the critical factors affecting the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, such as pore structures, the confinement effect, charge and energy transfer between the host and guest, conformational dynamics, and aggregation model of guest emitters. Thereafter, we summarize the effective methods for the preparation of host-guest systems, especially single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation and epitaxial growth, which are distinct from conventional methods based on amorphous materials. Then, the recent advancements in host-guest systems based on PCFs for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence are highlighted. Finally, we present our personal insights into the challenges and future opportunities in this promising field.

Linker Engineering toward Tunable Emission Behavior of Porous Interpenetrated Zr-Organic Frameworks

Conjugated molecules with donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) moieties have garnered significant attention for their ability to form luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs). D-A-D molecules feature tunable bandgaps, which can be varied systematically to control the fluorescence wavelength of LMOFs. In this study, we prepared and characterized the fluorescence properties of two porous interpenetrated Zr-organic frameworks (PIZOFs) constructed using 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diylbis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-Se) or 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diylbis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-S) as linkers. The corresponding MOFs are denoted as PIZOF-Se and PIZOF-S, respectively. Through our investigation, we explored the correlation between the structure of the frameworks and their respective optical properties. Our findings revealed that there are distinct differences in the fluorescence properties of the two PIZOFs. Specifically, the fluorescence of PIZOF-S is red-shifted from that characteristic of the corresponding linker, L-S. By contrast, the fluorescence of PIZOF-Se is substantially blue-shifted from that of linker L-Se. The emission of mixed-linker MOFs is explored by combining L-S or L-Se with structurally analogous, but nonfluorescent linker, 4,4'-((perfluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-F). Based on steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence experiments, as well as confocal fluorescence microscopy combined with fluorescence lifetime imaging (FILM), we demonstrated that linker engineering is an effective method to tune the emission behavior of LMOFs.

Multifunctional Amino Acid Derivative Coordination Compounds: Novel Contrast Agent and Luminescence Materials

In this work a family of multidimensional (2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)ethyl) amino acid coordination compounds have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. For this purpose, glycine, valine, phenylalanine and tyrosine have been selected as starting amino acids and Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ as metallic nodes. From one side, for Mn2+ based dimer magnetic resonance imaging studies have been conducted, prompted by the number and disposition of the coordinated water molecules and taking into consideration the promising future of manganese-based coordination compounds as bio-compatible substitutes to conventional Gd based contrast agents. From another side, d10 block metal-based complexes allowed exploring photoluminescence properties derived by in situ synthesized ligands. Finally, amino acid preserved structural chirality allowed us to examine chiroptical properties, particularly focusing on circularly polarized luminescence.

Smart-Responsive HOF Heterostructures with Multiple Spatial-Resolved Emission Modes toward Photonic Security Platform

Luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with the unique dynamics and versatile functional sites hold great potential application in information security, yet most of responsive HOFs focus on the single-component framework with restrained emission control, limiting further applications in advanced confidential information protection. Herein, the first smart-responsive HOF heterostructure with multiple spatial-resolved emission modes for covert photonic security platform is reported. The HOF heterostructures are prepared by integrating different HOFs into a single microwire based on a hydrogen-bond-assisted epitaxial growth method. The distinct responsive behaviors of HOFs permit the heterostructure to simultaneously display the thermochromism via the framework transformation and the acidichromism via the protonation effect, thus generating multiple emission modes. The dual stimuli-controlled spatial-resolved emission modes constitute the fingerprint of a heterostructure, and enable the establishment of the smart-responsive photonic barcode with multiple convert states, which further demonstrate the dynamic coding capability and enhanced security in anticounterfeiting label applications. These results offer a promising route to design function-oriented smart responsive HOF microdevices toward advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Design and application of dual-emission metal-organic framework-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel inorganic-organic hybridized crystals with a wide range of applications. In the last twenty years, fluorescence sensing based on MOFs has attracted much attention. MOFs can exhibit luminescence from metal nodes, ligands or introduced guests, which provides an excellent fluorescence response in sensing. However, single-signal emitting MOFs are susceptible to interference from concentration, environment, and excitation intensity, resulting in poor accuracy. To overcome the shortcomings, dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors have been proposed and rapidly developed. In this review, we first introduce the luminescence mechanisms, synthetic methods, and detection mechanisms of dual-emission MOFs, highlight the strategies for constructing ratiometric fluorescence sensors based on dual-emission MOFs, and classify them into three categories: intrinsic dual-emission and single-emission MOFs with luminescent guests, and non-emission MOFs with other luminescent materials. Then, we summarize the recent advances in dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors in various analytical industries. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and prospects for the future development of these sensors.

A two-dimensional metal-organic framework assembled from scandium-based cages for the selective capture of sulfur hexafluoride

Herein, we report the synthesis of a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF), assembled from octahedral metal-organic cages featuring phenanthroline-based carboxylate linkers and μ3-oxo-centered trinuclear Sc(III) inorganic building blocks. We study the performance of this MOF towards the capture of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). On account of its structural features and porous nature, this MOF displays an SF6 uptake capacity of 0.92 mmol g-1 at 0.1 bar and an isosteric heat of adsorption of about 30.7 kJ mol-1 for SF6, illustrating its potential application for the selective capture of SF6 from N2. In addition, we study the adsorptive binding mechanism of SF6 and N2 inside this MOF via molecular simulations.

Rhodamine B functionalized luminescent metal-organic frameworks for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of hydroquinone

The development of sensitive and selective detection methods for hydroquinone (HQ), a phenolic organic compound with high toxicity and low degradability, is of extraordinary importance. In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on functionalized luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) was designed and applied for the ratiometric fluorescence sensing of HQ. The sensor was prepared by the functionalization of IRMOF-3 with rhodamine B (RhB), possessing dual-emission fluorescence properties. After the addition of HQ, the blue fluorescence of the IRMOF-3 framework was gradually weakened, while the red fluorescence of RhB remained unchanged, resulting in the continuous fluorescence change of RhB@IRMOF-3 with HQ concentrations. The sensing mechanism demonstrates that HQ changes the fluorescence of the sensor via electron transfer between benzoquinone and RhB@IRMOF-3. The RhB@IRMOF-3 sensor has the advantages of a wide linear range, quick response speed, and strong specificity for HQ detection. This work is the first attempt focusing on functionalized LMOFs for HQ fluorescence detection, which has superb potential for the application to real environmental water samples.

Optical Properties of New Third-Order Nonlinear Materials Modified by Click Chemistry

A high-yielding click reaction was used to synthesize a series of highly conjugated, symmetrical, as well as asymmetrical compounds with a benzene core. Cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy were carried out, and proved that the side groups of the benzene derivatives played an important role in the energy gaps, and affected the third-order non-linear optical response. The maximum absorption wavelength of the series of benzene derivatives showed an obvious red-shift. Moreover, the addition of resilient electron-withdrawing groups significantly narrowed the energy levels as compared with precursors. The third-order nonlinear properties of this benzene derivative were tested by the Z-scan technique. The expected properties of this series of molecules were obtained, and it was found that the series of molecules undergoes a transition from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption, which has certain reference significance for a nonlinear optical field.

Glycols in the Synthesis of Zinc-Anilato Coordination Polymers

We report the synthesis, structural investigation, and thermal behavior for three zinc-based 1D-coordination polymers with 3,6-di-tert-butyl-2,5-dihydroxy-p-benzoquinone, which were synthesized in the presence of different glycols. The interaction of zinc nitrate with glycols, followed by using the resulting solution in solvothermal synthesis with the anilate ligand in DMF, makes it possible to obtain linear polymer structures with 1,2-ethylene or 1,2-propylene glycols coordinated to the metal. The reaction involving 1,3-propylene glycol under similar conditions gives a crystal structure that does not contain a diol. The crystal and molecular structures of the synthesized compounds were determined using single crystal by X-ray structural analysis. The influence of glycol molecules coordinated to the metal on the thermal destruction of synthesized compounds is shown.

Recent advancement in bimetallic metal organic frameworks (M’MOFs): Synthetic challenges and applications
