Ultrafast dynamics of an azobenzene-containing molecular shuttle based on a rotaxane

Controlling excited-state dynamics via protonation of naphthalene-based azo dyes

Azo dyes are a class of photoactive dyes that constitute a major focus of chemical research due to their applications in numerous industrial functions. This work explores the impact of protonation on the photophysics of four naphthalene-based azo dyes. The pKa value of the dyes increases proportionally with decreasing Hammett parameter of p-phenyl substituents from 8.1 (R = -H, σ = 0) to 10.6 (R = -NMe2, σ = -0.83) in acetonitrile. Protonation of the dyes shuts down the steady-state photoisomerization observed in the unprotonated moieties. Fluorescence measurements reveal a lower quantum yield with more electron-donating p-phenyl substituents, with overall lower fluorescence quantum yields than the unprotonated dyes. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals four excited-state lifetimes (<1 ps, ∼3 ps, ∼13 ps, and ∼200 ps) exhibiting faster excited-state dynamics than observed in the unprotonated forms (for 1-3: 0.7-1.5 ps, ∼3-4 ps, 20-40 ps, 20-300 min; for 4: 0.7 ps, 4.8 ps, 17.8 ps, 40 ps, 8 min). Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) elucidates the reason for the loss of isomerization in the protonated dyes, revealing a significant change in the lowest excited state potential energy nature and landscape upon protonation. Protonation impedes relaxation along the typical rotational and inversion isomerization axes, locking the dyes into a trans-configuration that rapidly decays back to the ground state.

Observation of Nanoconfinement Effect on the Kinetics of Hydrated Electron in the Nanoscale Water Pools of Water-AOT-Cyclohexane Microemulsions by Picosecond Pulse Radiolysis

The decay kinetics of the hydrated electron (eaq-) in aerosol OT (AOT)-based ternary microemulsions with pool sizes ranging from 0.34 to 4.85 nm were studied using picosecond pulse radiolysis coupled with transient absorption UV-vis spectroscopy. Electron transfer from oil to water and the subsequent solvation occurred within a time resolution of 7 ps. The decay kinetics of eaq- were accurately modeled using a double-exponential decay model, revealing the occurrence of two types of reactions, i.e., the recombination reaction at the water-oil interface and the radical-radical reactions in the water pools. The apparent lifetimes of both types of decays decreased significantly as the size of water pools decreased, indicating the influence of nanoconfinement effects. Moreover, the importance of the water-oil interface increased with decreasing water content, regardless of the presence or absence of NO3- as an electron scavenger in the water pools. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding on the kinetics of the radiation reaction in AOT-based microemulsions.

Multicharged cyclodextrin supramolecular assemblies

Multicharged cyclodextrin (CD) supramolecular assemblies, including those based on positively/negatively charged modified mono-6-deoxy-CDs, per-6-deoxy-CDs, and random 2,3,6-deoxy-CDs, as well as parent CDs binding positively/negatively charged guests, have been extensively applied in chemistry, materials science, medicine, biological science, catalysis, and other fields. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advances in positively/negatively charged CDs and parent CDs encapsulating positively/negatively charged guests, especially the construction process of supramolecular assemblies and their applications. Compared with uncharged CDs, multicharged CDs display remarkably high antiviral and antibacterial activity as well as efficient protein fibrosis inhibition. Meanwhile, charged CDs can interact with oppositely charged dyes, drugs, polymers, and biomacromolecules to achieve effective encapsulation and aggregation. Consequently, multicharged CD supramolecular assemblies show great advantages in improving drug-delivery efficiency, the luminescence properties of materials, molecular recognition and imaging, and the toughness of supramolecular hydrogels, in addition to enabling the construction of multistimuli-responsive assemblies. These features are anticipated to not only promote the development of CD-based supramolecular chemistry but also contribute to the rapid exploitation of these assemblies in diverse interdisciplinary applications.
