Metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type selective hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes

Metal-catalyzed highly Markovnikov-type selective hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes provides a straightforward and atom-economical route to access 1,1-disubstituted alkenes, which have a wide range of applications in organic synthesis. However, the highly Markovnikov-type selective transformations are challenging due to the electronic and steric effects during the addition process. With the development of metal-catalyzed organic synthesis, different metal catalysts have been developed to solve this challenge, especially for platinum group metal catalysts. In this perspective, we review homogeneous metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type selective hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes according to the classified element types as well as reaction mechanisms. Future avenues for investigation are also presented to help expand this exciting field.

Organophotoredox-Catalyzed Intermolecular Formal Grob Fragmentation of Cyclic Alcohols with Activated Allylic Acetates

We have developed an efficient method that employs organophotoredox-catalyzed relay Grob fragmentation to facilitate the smooth ring-opening allylation of cyclic alcohols in an environmentally friendly manner. This protocol directly incorporates a wide spectrum of cyclic alcohols and activated allylic acetates into the cross-coupling reaction, eliminating the need for metal catalysts. The process yields a variety of distally unsaturated ketones with good to excellent outcomes and stereoselectivity, while acetic acid is the sole byproduct.

Light-Promoted Nickel-Catalyzed C-O/C-N Coupling of Aryl Halides with Carboxylic Acids and Sulfonamides

A general strategy for the construction of dual-functional carbon-heteroatom bonds has been developed via a light-promoted nickel catalytic system. Employing a simple NiBr₂ as the catalyst without any exogeneous ligands and photosensitizers, a variety of esters and sulfonamide N-arylation derivatives, including celecoxib- and glimepiride-derived sulfonamides, were readily accessed with high functional group tolerance and high efficiency. Moreover, the UV-vis absorption spectrum and free radical trapping experiments aimed at revealing the mechanism of the reaction are also presented.

Ligand-controlled stereodivergent alkenylation of alkynes to access functionalized trans- and cis-1,3-dienes

Precise stereocontrol of functionalized alkenes represents a long-standing research topic in organic synthesis. Nevertheless, the development of a catalytic, easily tunable synthetic approach for the stereodivergent synthesis of both E-selective and even more challenging Z-selective highly substituted 1,3-dienes from common substrates remains underexploited. Here, we report a photoredox and nickel dual catalytic strategy for the stereodivergent sulfonylalkenylation of terminal alkynes with vinyl triflates and sodium sulfinates under mild conditions. With a judicious choice of simple nickel catalyst and ligand, this method enables efficient and divergent access to both Z- and E-sulfonyl-1,3-dienes from the same set of simple starting materials. This method features broad substrate scope, good functional compatibility, and excellent chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Experimental and DFT mechanistic studies offer insights into the observed divergent stereoselectivity controlled by ligands.

Iron-catalyzed deconstructive alkylation through chlorine radical induced C-C single bond cleavage under visible light

Selective C-C single bond cleavage of simple compounds is a highly challenging and desired process. Herein, a chlorine radical-induced deconstructive C-C bond alkylation with alcohols and alkenes catalyzed by iron salts was reported for the first time. Readily available alcohols and various electron-deficient alkenes were tolerated. Late-stage and large-scale reactions proceed smoothly. This catalyst system shows potential for diversified deconstructive functionalization of simple C-C bonds.

Dual Nickel/Photoredox-Catalyzed Site-Selective Cross-Coupling of 1,2-Bis-Boronic Esters Enabled by 1,2-Boron Shifts

Site‐selective transition‐metal‐catalyzed mono‐deboronative cross‐couplings of 1,2‐bis‐boronic esters are valuable methods for the synthesis of functionalized organoboron compounds. However, such cross‐couplings are limited to reaction of the sterically less hindered primary boronic ester. Herein, we report a nickel/photoredox‐catalyzed mono‐deboronative arylation of 1,2‐bis‐boronic esters that is selective for coupling of the more sterically hindered secondary/tertiary position. This is achieved by taking advantage of a 1,2‐boron shift of primary β‐boryl radicals to the thermodynamically favored secondary/tertiary radicals, which are subsequently intercepted by the nickel catalyst to enable arylation. The mild conditions are amenable to a broad range of aryl halides to give β‐aryl boronic ester products in good yields and with high regioselectivity. This method also allows stereodivergent coupling of cyclic cis‐1,2‐bis‐boronic esters to give trans‐substituted products.
