2D Windmill-like Ln-Containing Organophosphonate-Based Polyoxomolybdates: Synthesis, Characterization, Fluorescence, and Magnetism

By integration of {Ln(H₂O)₆}³⁺ into organophosphonate-based polyoxometalates, three Ln-containing organophosphonate-functionalized polyoxomolybdates Na_1.5H_1.5[{Ln(H₂O)₆}₂{(Mo₃O₈)(O₃PC(C₃H₆NH₃)OPO₃)}₄]·(CH₃CO₂)·43H₂O (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), and Dy (3)) are successfully prepared and systematically characterized. The X-ray crystallography analyses display complexes 1-3 crystallize in the C2/c space group of the monoclinic system and compose several distinctive tetramer windmill-like compounds that further assemble into two-dimensional (2D) frameworks associated with the {Ln(H₂O)₆}³⁺ core. The fluorescence spectra of 1-3 show red, green, and chartreuse emissions, respectively, originating in the typical f-f transitions of Ln³⁺ ions. More interestingly, complex 3 shows the field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties, resulting from the fact that [(Mo₃O₈)₄{O₃PC(C₃H₆NH₃)OPO₃}₄]^8- offers excellent magnetic isolation for Dy³⁺ ions by the nearest Dy1···Dy2 distance of 11.207 Å. The study demonstrates that the incorporation of {Ln(H₂O)₆}³⁺ into organophosphonate-based polyoxomolybdates is an effective synthetic strategy in implementing late-model opto-magnetic materials.

Modulation of slow magnetic relaxation in Gd(III)‐tetrahalosemiquinonate complexes

Incorporating lanthanoid(III)‐radical magnetic exchange coupling is a possible route to improving the performance of lanthanoid (Ln) single‐molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular materials that exhibit slow relaxation and low temperature quantum tunnelling of the magnetization. Complexes of Gd(III) can conveniently be used as model systems to study the Ln‐radical exchange coupling, thanks to the absence of the orbital angular momentum that is present for many Ln(III) ions. Two new Gd(III)‐radical compounds of formula [Gd(18‐c‐6)X₄SQ(NO₃)].I₃ (18‐c‐6=18‐crown‐6, X₄SQ⋅⁻=tetrahalo‐1,2‐semiquinonate, 1: X=Cl, 2: X=Br) have been synthesized, and the presence of the dioxolene ligand in its semiquinonate form confirmed by X‐ray crystallography, UV‐Visible‐NIR spectroscopy and voltammetry. Static magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy indicate differences in the low temperature magnetic properties of the two compounds, with antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of J_Gd‐SQ∼−2.0 cm⁻¹ (H_ex=−2J_Gd‐SQ(S_GdS_SQ)) determined by data fitting. Interestingly, compound 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation in applied magnetic fields while 2 relaxes much faster, pointing to the major role of packing effects in modulating slow relaxation of the magnetization.

Six-coordinated dinuclear lanthanide(III) amide complexes: investigation of magnetization relaxation dynamics and their electronic structures

A series of rare six-coordinated dinuclear Ln(III) complexes [Ln₂(μ-Cl)₂Cl₄Li₂(L)₂(THF)₆] were structurally characterized using a bulky amide ligand (L; Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2) and Y(3)). Detailed magnetic studies disclose that a weak antiferromagnetic coupling exists within 1 (-0.09 cm^-1) and 2 (-0.07 cm^-1; -2J Hamiltonian). Additionally, this study unveils the importance of the amide ligand at the coordination site of Dy(III), which manifests a slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. This has been rationalized by detailed ab initio calculations as well as the electronic structure determination of 1 and 2.
