Quinoxaline-based azamacrocycles: synthesis, AIE behavior and acidochromism

The development of luminescent molecular materials has advanced rapidly in recent decades, primarily driven by the synthesis of novel emissive compounds and a deeper understanding of excited-state mechanisms. Herein, we report a streamlined synthetic approach to light-emitting diazapolyoxa- and polyazamacrocycles N2CnOxQ and NyCnQ (n = 3-10; x = 2, 3; y = 2-5), incorporating a 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline residue (DPQ). This synthetic strategy based on macrocyclization through Pd-catalyzed amination reaction yields the target macrocycles in good or high yields (46-92%), enabling precise control over their structural parameters. A key role of the PhPF-tBu ligand belonging to the JosiPhos series in this macrocyclization was elucidated through DFT computation. This macrocyclization reaction eliminates the need for complex protecting-deprotecting procedures of secondary amine groups, offering a convenient and scalable method for the preparation of target compounds. Moreover, it boasts a potentially broad substrate scope, making it promising for structure-properties studies within photophysics, sensor development, and material synthesis. Photophysical properties of representative macrocycles were investigated, employing spectroscopic techniques and DFT computation. It was demonstrated that DPQ-containing macrocycles display aggregation-induced emission in a DCM-hexane solvent mixture despite the presence of flexible tethers within their structures. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a representative compound N2C8O3Q allowed us to gain deeper insight into its molecular structure and AIE behaviour. The emissive aggregates of the N2C10O3Q macrocycle were immobilized on filter paper yielding AIE-exhibiting test strips for measuring acidity in vapors and in aqueous media.

Fluorescent properties in solid-state and solution of novel tricyclic derivatives of chloro/bromophenylchromanones and 2-methylpyrazoline

In this work, we reported the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of seven novel tricyclic compounds resulting from the reaction of 3-benzylidenechromanone with Cl or Br substituent in different positions and without halogen with methylhydrazine. The structural characterization of compounds was done through different techniques i.e., FTIR,1HNMR,a single and powder X-Ray diffraction. Moreover, fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime assessed their fluorescent properties in the solid state and various solvents. Derivatives with Cl or Br substituent in positions 2 and 4 are isostructural. 4-Cl, 4-Br and 3-Cl compounds exhibit fluorescence with moderate efficiency (quantum yield 0.11-0.26) in solid state due to specific arrangements, so-called π-stack brick stone with head-to-tail self-assembly. Other crystalline compounds (2-Cl, 2-Br and 3-Br) that exhibit negligible fluorescence quantum yield have crossed V-type arrangement. In the solution, the nonhalogenated compound shows the best fluorescence efficiency. In turn, the presence of halogen atoms results in fluorescence decreasing. TD-DFT study revealed that unsubstituted compound higher emissive in solution has a different electron density distribution at HOMO and LUMO levels than less emissive substituted compounds (A3 and A3).

Packing Preferences of Chalcones: A Model Conjugated Pharmaceutical Scaffold

We sought the crystal packing preferences of the chalcone scaffold by analyzing 232 single-component crystal structures of chalcones with a small (six or fewer non-hydrogen atoms) substituent on either or both rings, including the unsubstituted molecule. This covers 216 molecules, as some are polymorphic, and 277 independent molecular conformations, as 16% of the crystal structures have more than one symmetry independent molecule. Quantum mechanical conformational profiles of the unsubstituted molecule and the almost 5000 crystal structures within 20 kJ mol^-1 of the global minimum generated in a crystal structure prediction (CSP) study have been used to complement this analysis. Although π conjugation would be expected to favor a planar molecule, there are a significant number of crystal structures containing nonplanar molecules with an approximately 50° angle between the aromatic rings. The relative orientations of the molecules in the inversion-related dimers and translation-related dimers in the experimental crystal structures show the same trends as in the CSP-generated structures for the unsubstituted molecule, allowing for the substituent making the side-to-side distances larger. There is no type of dimer geometry associated with particularly favorable lattice energies for the chalcone core. Less than a third of the experimental structures show a face-to-face contact associated with π···π stacking. Analysis of the experimental crystal structures with XPac and Mercury finds various pairs of isostructural crystals, but the largest isostructural set had only 15 structures, with all substituents (mainly halogens) in the para position. The most common one-dimensional motif, found in half of the experimental crystal structures, is a translation-related side-to-side packing, which can be adopted by all the observed conformations. This close-packed motif can be adopted by chalcones with a particularly wide variety of substituents as the substituents are at the periphery. Thus, although the crystal structures of the substituted chalcones show thermodynamically plausible packings of the chalcone scaffold, there is little evidence for any crystal engineering principle of preferred chalcone scaffold packing beyond close packing of the specific molecule.

Modulating Room-Temperature Phosphorescence-To-Phosphorescence Mechanochromism by Halogen Exchange

Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.
