Construction of Pillared-Layer Metal-Organic Frameworks as an All-Visible-Light Switchable Photocatalyst for Aqueous Cr(VI) Reduction

Recently, two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks that are photoactive have shown great potential for efficiently converting solar energy into chemical energy. In this work, we successfully synthesized and designed two M2-MOFs ([Cu(L1)((CH3)2NH)]n (Cu-MOF) and [Zn(L1)(CH3)2NH)]n (Zn-MOF), H2L1 = 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic acid). Structural analysis suggests that the five-coordinated M(II) ion is surrounded by four oxygen ions from two ligands and one nitrogen atom from one dimethylamine molecule. The ligand spacer acts as a bridge between two SBUs and forms a 2D layer with rhomboid windows. These moieties are arranged in a staggered ABAB pattern, which likely aids in exfoliation. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) test shows that when the metal center in the MOF framework is replaced with Cu(II) ions, the light absorption range covers 200-1100 nm, which is much larger than the light absorption range of Zn-MOF. Moreover, the photoelectric current, electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), and Mott-Schottky tests all indicate that Cu-MOF has better photoelectric properties. When applied to the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), Cu-MOF and Zn-MOF can completely reduce Cr(VI) within 100 min under 450 nm LED light irradiation. Under sunlight irradiation, Cu-MOF can completely reduce Cr(VI) within 40 min, achieving the removal of Cr(VI) ions, which is much faster than the rate of Cr(VI) removal by Zn-MOF.

Tailoring Energy Transfer in Mixed Eu/Tb Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Eu/Tb metal-organic frameworks (Eu/Tb-MOFs), exhibiting Eu3+ and Tb3+ emissions, stand out as some of the most fascinating luminescent thermometers. As the relative thermal sensitivity model is limited to its lack of precision for fitting ratio of Eu3+ and Tb3+ emissions, accurately predicting the sensing performance of Eu/Tb-MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a series of luminescent Eu/Tb-MOF thermometers, EuxTb1-xL, with excellent thermal sensitivity around physiological levels, achieved through the tuning energy transfer from ligands to Eu3+ and Tb3+ and between the Ln ions. It was found that the singlet lowest-energy excited state (S1) of the ligand and the higher triplet energy level (Tn) are crucial in the energy transfer processes of ligand→Tb3+ and ligand→Eu3+. This enables EuxTb1-xL to serve as an effective platform for exploring the impact of these energy transfer processes on the temperature-sensing properties of luminescent Eu/Tb-MOF thermometers. The relative thermal sensitivity is comparable to that of dual-center MOF-based luminescent thermometers operating at physiological levels. This study provides valuable insights into the design of new Eu/Tb thermometers and the accurate prediction of their sensing performance.

Two 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Purine Carboxylic Acid Ligands for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides and CO2 Chemical Fixation

Two two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Yb(L)(H2O)2NO3]·2H2O}n (Yb-MOF) and [Er(L)(H2O)3Cl]n (Er-MOF) (H2L = 5-((6H-purin-6-yl)amino)isophthalic acid), were constructed by a solvothermal method and characterized. The catalytic performance study showed that the Yb-MOF could efficiently catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under 15 W light-emitting diode (LED) blue light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction process involved •O2-, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Moreover, Er-MOF exhibited good catalytic efficiency and excellent substrate tolerance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2, and the reaction conditions were mild. After 5 cycles, the catalytic activities of two MOFs did not significantly decrease, and the framework structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the Yb-MOF and Er-MOF were considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

MIL-100(Fe)-Hybridized Nanofibers for Adsorption and Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Water Pollutants: Experimental and DFT Approach

As rapid industrial growth spawns severe water contamination and a far-reaching impact on environmental safety, the development of a purification system is in high demand. Herein, a visible light-induced photocatalytic adsorbent membrane was developed by growing a porous metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-100(Fe) crystals, onto electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and its purification capability by adsorption and the photocatalytic effect was investigated. As water-soluble organic foulants, a cationic dye, rhodamine B (RhB), and an anionic dye, methyl orange (MO), were employed, and the adsorption/desorption characteristics were analyzed. Since MIL-100(Fe) possesses positive charges in aqueous solution, MO was more rapidly adsorbed onto the MIL-100(Fe) grown PAN membrane (MIL-100(Fe)@PAN) than RhB. Under visible light, both photocatalytic degradation and adsorption occurred concurrently, facilitating the purification process. The reusability of MIL-100(Fe)@PAN as an adsorbent was explored by cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborated higher binding energy of charged MO over RhB and demonstrated the possible steric hindrance of RhB to adhere in MOF pores. The emphasis of the study lies in the combined investigation of the experimental approach and DFT calculations for the fundamental understanding of adsorption/desorption phenomena occurring in the purification process. This study provides theoretical support for the interaction between MOF-hybrid complexes and contaminants when MOF-hybridized composites adsorb or photodegrade water-soluble pollutants of different charges and sizes.
