Fabrication of Ru-doped CuMnBP micro cluster electrocatalyst with high efficiency and stability for electrochemical water splitting application at the industrial-level current density

Electrochemical water splitting has been considered as a key pathway to generate environmentally friendly green hydrogen energy and it is essential to design highly efficient electrocatalysts at affordable cost to facilitate the redox reactions of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, a novel micro-clustered Ru/CuMnBP electrocatalyst is introduced, prepared via hydrothermal deposition and soaking-assisted Ru doping approaches on Ni foam substrate. Ru/CuMnBP micro-clusters exhibit relatively low HER/OER turnover overpotentials of 11 mV and 85 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH. It also demonstrates a low 2-E turnover cell voltage of 1.53 V at 10 mA/cm2 for the overall water-splitting, which is comparable with the benchmark electrodes of Pt/C||RuO2. At a super high-current density of 2000 mA/cm2, the dual functional Ru/CuMnBP demonstrates an exceptionally low 2-E cell voltage of 3.13 V and also exhibits superior stability for over 10 h in 1 M KOH. Excellent electrochemical performances originate from the large electrochemical active surface area with the micro cluster morphology, high intrinsic activity of CuMnBP micro-clusters optimized through component ratio adjustment and the beneficial Ru doping effect, which enhances active site density, conductivity and stability. The usage of Ru in small quantities via the simple soaking doping approach significantly improves electrochemical reaction rates for both HER and OER, making Ru/CuMnBP micro-clusters promising candidates for advanced electrocatalytic applications.

Eu(III) functionalized ZnMOF based efficient dual-emission sensor integrated with self-calibrating logic gate for intelligent detection of epinephrine

The rapid detection of epinephrine (EPI) in serum holds immense importance in the early disease diagnosis and regular monitoring. On the basis of the coordination post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy, a Eu3+ functionalized ZnMOF (Eu3+@ZnMOF) was fabricated by anchoring the Eu3+ ions within the microchannels of ZnMOF as secondary luminescent centers. Benefiting from two independent luminescent centers, the prepared Eu3+@ZnMOF shows great potential as a multi-signal self-calibrating luminescent sensor in visually and efficiently detecting serum EPI levels, with high reliability, fast response time, excellentrecycleability, and low detection limits of 17.8 ng/mL. Additionally, an intelligent sensing system was designed in accurately and reliably detecting serum EPI levels, based on the designed self-calibrating logic gates. Furthermore, the possible sensing mechanisms were elucidated through theoretical calculations as well as spectral overlaps. This work provides an effective and promising strategy for developing MOFs-based self-calibrating intelligent sensing platforms to detect bioactive molecules in bodily fluids.

Three-dimensional bimodal pore-rich G/MXene sponge amalgamated with vanadium diselenide nanosheets as a high-performance electrode for electrochemical water-oxidation/reduction reactions

Exploring new strategies to design non-precious and efficient electrocatalysts can provide a solution for sluggish electrocatalytic kinetics and sustainable hydrogen energy. Transition metal selenides are potential contenders for bifunctional electrocatalysis owing to their unique layered structure, low band gap, and high intrinsic activities. However, insufficient access to active sites, lethargic water dissociation, and structural degradation of active materials during electrochemical reactions limit their activities, especially in alkaline media. In this article, we report a useful strategy to assemble vanadium diselenide (VSe2) into a 3D MXene/rGO-based sponge-like architecture (VSe2@G/MXe) using hydrothermal and freeze-drying approaches. The 3D hierarchical meso/macro-pore rich sponge-like morphology not only prevents aggregation of VSe2 nanosheets but also offers a kinetics-favorable framework and high robustness to the electrocatalyst. Synergistic coupling of VSe2 and a MXene/rGO matrix yields a heterostructure with a large specific surface area, high conductivity, and multi-dimensional anisotropic pore channels for uninterrupted mass transport and gas diffusion. Consequently, VSe2@G/MXe presented superior electrochemical activity for both the HER and OER compared to its counterparts (VSe2 and VSe2@G), in alkaline media. The overpotentials required to reach a cathodic and anodic current density of 10 mA cm-2 were 153 mV (Tafel slope = 84 mV dec-1) and 241 mV (Tafel slope = 87 mV dec-1), respectively. The Rct values at the open circuit voltage were as low as 9.1 Ω and 1.41 Ω for the HER and OER activity, respectively. Importantly, VSe2@G/MXe withstands a steady current output for a long 24 h operating time. Hence, this work presents a rational design for 3D microstructures with optimum characteristics for efficient bifunctional alkaline water-splitting.

CoFeBP Micro Flowers (MFs) for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts

Hydrogen is one of the most promising green energy alternatives due to its high gravimetric energy density, zero-carbon emissions, and other advantages. In this work, a CoFeBP micro-flower (MF) electrocatalyst is fabricated as an advanced water-splitting electrocatalyst by a hydrothermal approach for hydrogen production with the highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The fabrication process of the CoFeBP MF electrocatalyst is systematically optimized by thorough investigations on various hydrothermal synthesis and post-annealing parameters. The best optimized CoFeBP MF electrode demonstrates HER/OER overpotentials of 20 mV and 219 mV at 20 mA/cm2. The CoFeBP MFs also exhibit a low 2-electrode (2-E) cell voltage of 1.60 V at 50 mA/cm2, which is comparable to the benchmark electrodes of Pt/C and RuO2. The CoFeBP MFs demonstrate excellent 2-E stability of over 100 h operation under harsh industrial operational conditions at 60 °C in 6 M KOH at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm2. The flower-like morphology can offer a largely increased electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and systematic post-annealing can lead to improved crystallinity in CoFeBP MFs.

Dual-Functional Ru/Ni-B-P Electrocatalyst Toward Accelerated Water Electrolysis and High-Stability

Development of advanced electrocatalysts for the green hydrogen production by water electrolysis is an important task to reduce the climate and environmental issues as well as to meet the future energy demands. Herein, Ru/Ni-B-P sphere electrocatalyst is demonstrated by a combination of hydrothermal and soaking approaches, meeting the industrial requirement of low cell voltage with stable high-current operation. The Ru/Ni-B-P sphere catalyst demonstrates low overpotentials of 191 and 350 mV at 300 mA cm-2 with stable high current operation, ranking it as one of the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. The bifunctional 2-E system demonstrates a low cell voltage of 2.49 V at 2000 mA cm-2 in 6 m KOH at 60 °C of harsh industrial operation condition. It also demonstrates outstanding stability with continuous 120 h (5 days) CA operation at 1000 mA cm-2. Further, the hybrid configuration of Ru/Ni-B-P || Pt/C being paired with the conventional benchmark electrode demonstrates a record low 2-E cell voltage of 2.40 V at 2000 mA cm-2 in 6 m KOH and excellent stability at high current of 1500 mA cm-2 under industrial operational condition.

Vanadium-Doped FeBP Microsphere Croissant for Significantly Enhanced Bi-Functional HER and OER Electrocatalyst

Ultra-fine hydrogen produced by electrochemical water splitting without carbon emission is a high-density energy carrier, which could gradually substitute the usage of traditional fossil fuels. The development of high-performance electrocatalysts at affordable costs is one of the major research priorities in order to achieve the large-scale implementation of a green hydrogen supply chain. In this work, the development of a vanadium-doped FeBP (V-FeBP) microsphere croissant (MSC) electrocatalyst is demonstrated to exhibit efficient bi-functional water splitting for the first time. The FeBP MSC electrode is synthesized by a hydrothermal approach along with the systematic control of growth parameters such as precursor concentration, reaction duration, reaction temperature and post-annealing, etc. Then, the heteroatom doping of vanadium is performed on the best FeBP MSC by a simple soaking approach. The best optimized V-FeBP MSC demonstrates the low HER and OER overpotentials of 52 and 180 mV at 50 mA/cm² in 1 M KOH in a three-electrode system. In addition, the two-electrode system, i.e., V-FeBP || V-FeBP, demonstrates a comparable water-splitting performance to the benchmark electrodes of Pt/C || RuO₂ in 1 M KOH. Similarly, exceptional performance is also observed in natural sea water. The 3D MSC flower-like structure provides a very high surface area that favors rapid mass/electron-transport pathways, which improves the electrocatalytic activity. Further, the V-FeBP electrode is examined in different pH solutions and in terms of its stability under industrial operational conditions at 60 °C in 6 M KOH, and it shows excellent stability.
