Abstract
Two donor-acceptor dyes with an ortho-phenylene-linked carbazole electron donor and a benzothiazole-fused boron heterocyclic acceptor were designed, synthesized, and spectroscopically investigated. Due to the steric effects of boron heterocyclic units, the dyes demonstrate different conformations in the crystalline state. The presence of numerous hydrogen-bonding intermolecular interactions and the very weak π-π stacking in the molecular packing results in intense solid-state emission with photoluminescence quantum yields of 40 and 18% for crystals and 50 and 42% for host-based light-emitting layers. The compounds show aggregation-induced emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The received ionization potential and electron affinity values suggested good charge-injecting ability and bipolar charge-transporting properties of the developed dyes. Transport of holes and electrons was detected in layers of one dye by the time-of-flight measurements. The benzothiazole-based boron difluoride complexes showed high electron mobility of 1.5 × 10-4 and 0.7 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 at an electric field of 1.35 × 106 V cm-1. Therefore, these dyes were successfully applied as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes with external quantum efficiencies of 15 and 13%, respectively. Our study marks a critical advancement in the area of solid-state emissive boron difluoride dyes, which can be applied as TADF emitters into organic light-emitting diodes. The obtained results reveal that the orientation of the acceptor unit in the ortho-phenylene-linked donor-acceptor dyes makes a significant impact on the TADF activity.

Abstract
In conventional strategies to design donor-acceptor (D-A) organic molecules with a large electronic contribution to the first hyperpolarizability (β), the effects of the torsion angles (θ1 and θ2) between donor and acceptor moieties are barely considered. To address this issue, in this work, a promising and novel intramolecular boron-locking strategy combined with the different locking groups of different acceptors to control θ1 and θ2, has been proposed to make D-A organic molecules with large β values. Intriguingly, reducing the torsion angles will make the β value of the pyridiny thiophene triphenylamine unit (Py-Th-TPA) dramatically increase up to 94%, which is mainly ascribed to the smaller θ1 and θ2 leading to lower excited energy of the crucial excited state, and enhanced charge transfer (CT) from TPA to Py-Th moieties, and finally greatly increase the donor and acceptor part contributions to β. Correlation between the difference, |θ1 - θ2| and β, provides a large coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.78, which demonstrates that |θ1 - θ2| can be regarded as a potential descriptor for designing nonlinear optics (NLO) materials with D-A architecture. Clearly, we uncovered that θ1 and θ2 play a crucial role in the performance of NLO materials with D-A fragments.

Abstract
Photochemical properties of symmetrical pyromellitic diimide containing two cymantrenyl fragments at two nitrogen atoms were studied with IR, NMR, UV-vis, ESI-MS, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that new unstable chelates are formed during photolysis. At the same time, the CO ligand dissociates from two Mn(CO)3 fragments during photoexcitation, which dramatically changes the electronic and redox properties of the molecule compared to the cymantrene derivative containing one imide fragment. Photolysis leads to a color change from light yellow to green. DFT calculations confirmed the possibility of the formation of complexes due to the loss of one or two CO ligands from manganese atoms. The results obtained with variation of photolysis conditions demonstrated the hemilabile character of the Mn-O=C(imide) bond. On addition of external ligands, the color and electrochemical properties changed, which is promising for the use of this complex as a sensor for small molecules.

Abstract
Recently, through space charge transfer (TSCT)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have shown advantages in achieving high efficiencies and tunable emissions. However, the relationships between basic molecular structures and luminescent properties are unclear. Theoretical investigations to reveal the substitution effects with different numbers and positions on excited-state properties are highly desired. Herein, by taking TSCT-based TADF molecules S-CNDF-S-tCz, S-CNDF-D-tCz and T-CNDF-T-tCz as skeletons, a series of promising TADF molecules are designed by adopting ortho, meta and para substitutions with different numbers and positions. Photophysical properties of total 16 molecules are theoretically studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in chloroform combined with polarizable continuum model. Results indicate that molecules with ortho-substitution possess small geometric changes and short Donor-Acceptor distances which are induced by the intramolecular van der Waals interactions. Decreased non-radiative consumption and increased TSCT ratio and therefore excellent performance for them can be expected. For molecules with large substitution numbers, twist structures facilitate them to realize small adiabatic energy gaps between the lowest singlet excited state (S1) and the lowest triplet excited state (T1), this designing strategy is consistent with the TADF dendrimers. Thus, the relationships between molecular structures and luminescent properties are revealed and promising TSCT-based TADF molecules with high efficiencies are theoretically proposed. Our investigations provide theoretical perspectives for inner mechanisms of substitution effect, which could further afford meaningful guidance to design new efficient TSCT-based TADF molecules.

Abstract
Throughout the opto-electronic devices industry, organic materials with considerable nonlinear optical (NLO) capabilities are being used. By employing 4,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrimidine as a standard molecule, a series for new dyes (DMBMB1-DMBMB6) are created in the present paper by altering their functionalization with various electron acceptor (A) functional groups. The density functional fheory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) based calculations have been performed to explore NLO responses by adjustment of different A units. The energy gap (Egap) of their highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) was ranged between 0.22-2.43 eV which was also used to calculate their global chemical parameters (GRPs). All the new dyes were subjected to UV-Vis studies revealing their frequencies being red shifted from starting dye (DMBMB). The theoretical investigations like frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was used to investigate their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). The dye DMBMB6 had the greatest linear polarizability, first hyperpolarizability (αtotal), and second order hyperpolarizability (βtotal) for all the developed dyes. In conclusion, due of their low ICT, all the dyes showed potential NLO features. Scientific researchers would be able to harness these NLO features to discover NLO materials for current and future uses.

Abstract
Constructing charge transfer (CT) systems and packing arrangement are common and effective methods to control the efficiency of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Apart from the traditional through-bond CT (TBCT) systems, through-space CT (TSCT) also leads to distinctive optical and electronic properties. Meanwhile, corresponding theoretical investigations of the aggregation effect are highly desired. In this work, some TSCT and model compounds incorporating acenaphthene as a scaffold and triphenylamine (TPA) as the donor are theoretically performed to systematically reveal the effect of both solvent and solid environments on their static first hyperpolarizabilities (βtot) by using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. Results indicate that the dichloromethane solvent effect within the PCM approach causes an almost 2 times increase of the βtot values. Besides, the different packing modes and intermolecular interactions have remarkable influence on the second-order NLO properties. For the case of TPA-ace-CN in the crystal state, the parallel arrangement will lead to large NLO responses (4.9 × 10-30 esu) compared to the correspondingly isolated molecule (3.4 × 10-30 esu). However, for the TPA-ace-TRZ compound with the TSCT architecture, selection of the molecular arrangement may make the aggregate ineffective due to the offset of the through-space dipole and charge transfer between D-A groups, which lead to the βtot values decreasing from 15.2 × 10-30 to 7.7 × 10-30 esu. We believe that our calculation will serve as a guide for the exploration of more efficient NLO materials wherein the molecules are oriented in their most favorable arrangements.

Abstract
To meet the expanding demands of high performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, an unprecedented intramolecular-locked strategy is proposed to design NLO materials with remarkable static first hyperpolarizability (β0). This strategy means that importing a large steric hindrance group diphenylmethane (DPM) decreases the torsion angles (θ) between the donor {triphenylamine (TPA)} and acceptor {9-H-thioxanthen-9-one-10,10-dioxide (TXO)} units, as well as between the donor (TPA) and π-bridge (benzene) fragments. The decrease of θ can accelerate the intramolecular charge transfer and enhance the contributions of the TPA, TXO and quinoxaline-6,7-dicarbo-nitrile (QCN) fragments to the axial component of the β0 value, and then the β0 values of TPA-TXO (β0 = 10 762 au) and TPA-QCN (β0 = 22 495 au) are increased by 14.9% and 34.4%, respectively. Overall, the intramolecular-locked strategy is very effective for designing high performance NLO materials.
