Dissecting the effects of water guest adsorption and framework breathing on the AlO4(OH)2 centres of metal-organic framework MIL-53 (Al) by solid state NMR and structural analysis

New easily recycled carrier based polyurethane foam by loading Al-MOF and biochar for selective removal of fluoride ion from aqueous solutions

The production of Integrated circuits (ICs) generates wastewater with a high concentration of residual fluoride ions, necessitating highly efficient fluorine removal methods. In this study, a novel composite carrier was developed using a hydrothermal synthesis method to load Al-MOF and biochar (BC) onto polyurethane foam (PUF), resulting in the composite foam of Al-MOF-PUF@BC. The results showed that the composite carrier exhibited a stable fluoride removal effect, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 16.52 mg/g at room temperature. The adsorption isotherm curves were consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetics were well-described by the pseudo-first-order model. The mechanism of fluorine adsorption on Al-MOF-PUF@BC was ligand exchange with hydroxyl groups and the formation of FAl bonds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the adsorption energy reached -246.7 eV, indicating stable adsorption for fluoride ions. The composite foam demonstrated excellent regenerative properties and was effective for fluoride removal in actual IC wastewater.

Surface Hydrophobicity and Guest Permeability in Polydimethylsiloxane-Coated MIL-53 as Studied by Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Experimental characterization of the hydrophobic porous materials at the atomic and molecular levels is of great significance, but exploring their hydrophobicity characteristics and interactions with guest molecules with distinct polarity is still challenging. In this work, solid-state NMR is employed to characterize the surface hydrophobicity and explore the guest solvent permeability in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated MIL-53. It was found that the PDMS-coated MIL-53 was hydrophobic to water and infiltrated to methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene solvents. In addition, two types of guest solvents (methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene), inside the pore and outside the pore of PDMS-coated MIL-53, were clearly identified using two-dimensional 1H-1H homo-nuclear correlation NMR experiments. Moreover, the membrane thickness of the PDMS-coated MIL-53 could be determined from the analysis of the 1H-1H spin diffusion buildup curves. Furthermore, the permeability of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene at different PDMS coating levels was extracted from 1H MAS NMR. The increase of the hydrophobic PDMS layer resulted in a decrease of the penetration of aromatic guests to the internal pore of MIL-53. This work provides deep insights into the understanding of guest solvent permeability of hydrophobic layer-coated MOFs in the application fields of catalysis and separation.

Efficient capture and storage of ammonia in robust aluminium-based metal-organic frameworks

The development of stable sorbent materials to deliver reversible adsorption of ammonia (NH₃) is a challenging task. Here, we report the efficient capture and storage of NH₃ in a series of robust microporous aluminium-based metal-organic framework materials, namely MIL-160, CAU-10-H, Al-fum, and MIL-53(Al). In particular, MIL-160 shows high uptakes of NH₃ of 4.8 and 12.8 mmol g^-1 at both low and high pressure (0.001 and 1.0 bar, respectively) at 298 K. The combination of in situ neutron powder diffraction, synchrotron infrared micro-spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals the preferred adsorption domains of NH₃ molecules in MIL-160, with H/D site-exchange between the host and guest and an unusual distortion of the local structure of [AlO₆] moieties being observed. Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent ability of MIL-160 to capture of NH₃ with a dynamic uptake of 4.2 mmol g^-1 at 1000 ppm. The combination of high porosity, pore aperture size and multiple binding sites promotes the significant binding affinity and capacity for NH₃, which makes it a promising candidate for practical applications.
