Synthesis of Sulfonated Phenylsilsesquioxanes Guided by Machine Learning

Sulfonated octaphenylsilsesquioxane (SPOSS) has garnered significant interest due to its unique structural properties of containing the -SO3H group and its wide range of applications. This study introduces a novel approach to the synthesis of SPOSS, leveraging machine learning algorithms to explore new recipes and achieve higher -SO3H functionality. The focus was on synthesizing SPOSS with 2, 4, 6, and 8-SO3H functional groups on the phenyl group, marked as SPOSS-2, SPOSS-4, SPOSS-6, and SPOSS-8, respectively. The successful synthesis of SPOSS-8 was achieved by 5 training outputs based on the recipes of 21 sets of low-functionality (<4) SPOSS. The structure of SPOSS was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Machine learning analysis revealed that K2SO4 is an important additive to improve the functionality of SPOSS. A synthetic mechanism was proposed and validated that K2SO4 participated in the reaction to generate sulfur trioxide (SO3), a sulfonating agent with high reactivity. SPOSS shows thermal stability superior to octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS) according to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TG-FTIR.

Sulfonic Acid-Grafted Hybrid Porous Polymer Based on Double-Decker Silsesquioxane as Highly Efficient Acidic Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Alcoholysis of Styrene Oxide

β-Alkoxyalcohols generated from epoxide ring-opening reactions are significant due to their enormous value as pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals. Using a phenyl-substituted double-decker-type silsesquioxane as the precursor, a hybrid porous material (PCS-DDSQ) was synthesized through a Scholl coupling reaction with an AlCl₃ catalyst. Then, novel excellent Brønsted acid-derived silsesquioxane solid catalysts (PCS-DDSQ-SO₃H-x) were successfully obtained through an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction of chlorosulfonic acid on phenyl rings of PCS-DDSQ, fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption, water contact angle, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller model, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state ¹³C and ²⁹Si nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The catalytic behavior of the PCS-DDSQ-SO₃H-x with different SO₃H loadings for the methanolysis of styrene oxide was compared and evaluated. The presence of SO₃H groups endows them with excellent catalytic abilities, achieving the highest values from PCS-DDSQ-SO₃H-1 (the acid site of its catalyst is 1.84 mmol/g) as 99% conversion and 100% selectivity for the methanolysis of styrene oxide in 30 min, which shows superior catalytic properties of low dosage and high efficiency. Furthermore, the PCS-DDSQ-SO₃H-1 catalyst can maintain high activity and selectivity after three cycles. This study provides a feasible method for the preparation of Brønsted solid acid catalysts with different acid loadings by introducing the sulfonic group into PCS-DDSQ.

Perspectives for the Upgrading of Bio-Based Vicinal Diols within the Developing European Bioeconomy

The previous decade has witnessed a drastic increase of European incentives aimed at pushing forward the transition from an exclusively petro-based economy toward a strong and homogeneous bio-based economy. Since 2012, numerous programs have been developed to stimulate and promote research and innovation relying on sustainable and renewable resources. Terrestrial biomass is a virtually infinite reservoir of biomacromolecules, the biorefining of which provides platform molecules of low complexity yet with tremendous industrial potential. Among such bio-based platform molecules, polyols and, more specifically, molecules featuring vicinal diols have gained tremendous interest and have stimulated an increasing research effort from the chemistry and chemical engineering communities. This Review revolves around the most promising process conditions and technologies reported since 2012 that specifically target bio-based vicinal diols and promote their transformation into value-added molecules of wide industrial interest, such as olefins, epoxides, cyclic carbonates, and ketals.
