Adjusted MnO oxygen vacancy for highly selective ORR production of H2O2

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via the two-electron pathway is an important method of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. This study demonstrates that MnO with different oxygen vacancies possesses great 2e- ORR activity. The H2O2 selectivity increased from 10% to 93% with increasing oxygen vacancy concentration by adjusting the reaction temperature and time. Moreover, the H2O2 yield of the optimal MnO reached 544.1 mmol g-1 h-1, and it showed extraordinary stability over a long period of time (10 000 circles CV), surpassing most of the reported transition metal catalysts. This provides a new strategy for efficient and low-cost electrochemical production of H2O2.

Electrocatalytic Generation of Singlet Oxygen via ROS-Mediated Redox Chain Reaction for Efficient Disinfection

The risk of harmful microorganisms to ecosystems and human health has stimulated exploration of singlet oxygen (1O2)-based disinfection. It can be potentially generated via an electrocatalytic process, but is limited by the low production yield and unclear intermediate-mediated mechanism. Herein, we designed a two-site catalyst (Fe/Mo-N/C) for the selective 1O2 generation. The Mo sites enhance the generation of 1O2 precursors (H2O2), accompanied by the generation of intermediate •HO2/•O2-. The Fe site facilitates activation of H2O2 into •OH, which accelerates the •HO2/•O2- into 1O2. A possible mechanism for promoting 1O2 production through the ROS-mediated chain reaction is reported. The as-developed electrochemical disinfection system can kill 1 × 107 CFU mL-1 of E. coli within 8 min, leading to cell membrane damage and DNA degradation. It can be effectively applied for the disinfection of medical wastewater. This work provides a general strategy for promoting the production of 1O2 through electrocatalysis and for efficient electrochemical disinfection.

Understanding Advanced Transition Metal-Based Two Electron Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts from the Perspective of Phase Engineering

Non-noble transition metal (TM)-based compounds have recently become a focal point of extensive research interest as electrocatalysts for the two electron oxygen reduction (2e- ORR) process. To efficiently drive this reaction, these TM-based electrocatalysts must bear unique physiochemical properties, which are strongly dependent on their phase structures. Consequently, adopting engineering strategies toward the phase structure has emerged as a cutting-edge scientific pursuit, crucial for achieving high activity, selectivity, and stability in the electrocatalytic process. This comprehensive review addresses the intricate field of phase engineering applied to non-noble TM-based compounds for 2e- ORR. First, the connotation of phase engineering and fundamental concepts related to oxygen reduction kinetics and thermodynamics are succinctly elucidated. Subsequently, the focus shifts to a detailed discussion of various phase engineering approaches, including elemental doping, defect creation, heterostructure construction, coordination tuning, crystalline design, and polymorphic transformation to boost or revive the 2e- ORR performance (selectivity, activity, and stability) of TM-based catalysts, accompanied by an insightful exploration of the phase-performance correlation. Finally, the review proposes fresh perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities in this burgeoning field, together with several critical research directions for the future development of non-noble TM-based electrocatalysts.
