Acetate Ions Facilitated Immobilization of Highly Dispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoclusters in Mesoporous Silica

The immobilization of tiny active species within inert mesoporous silica imparts a range of functions, enhancing their applicability. A significant obstacle is the spontaneous migration and aggregation of these species within the mesopores, which threaten their uniform distribution. To address this, we propose a postmodification method that involves grafting transition metal oxide nanoclusters into silica mesopores via interfacial condensation, catalyzed by acetate ions. Specifically, CuO nanoclusters, in the form of oligomeric [O1-x-Cu2-(OH) 2x]n2+, have a strong interaction with the silica framework. This interaction inhibits their growth and prevents mesopore blockage. Theoretical calculation results reveal that the acetate ion promotes proton transfer among various hydroxy species, lowering the free energy and thereby facilitating the formation of Cu-O-Si bonds. This technique has also been successfully applied to the encapsulation of four other types of transition metal oxide nanoclusters. Our encapsulation strategy effectively addresses the challenge of dispersing transition metal oxides in mesoporous silica, offering a straightforward and widely applicable method for enhancing the functionality of mesoporous materials.

Boosting the catalytic performance of Cu-SAPO-34 in NOx removal via hydrothermal treatment

Phosphate ions promoted Cu-SAPO-34 (P-Cu-SAPO-34) were prepared using bulk CuO particles as Cu2+ precursor by a solid-state ion exchange technique for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR). The effects of high temperature (H-T) hydrothermal aging on the NOx removal (de-NOx) performance of Cu-SAPO-34 with and without phosphate ions were systematically investigated at atomic level. The results displayed that both Cu-SAPO-34 and P-Cu-SAPO-34 presented relatively poor NOx removal activity with a low conversion (< 30%) at 250-500°C. However, after H-T hydrothermal treatment (800°C for 10 hr at 10% H2O), these two samples showed significantly satisfied NOx elimination performance with a quite high conversion (70%-90%) at 250-500°C. Additionally, phosphate ions decoration can further enhance the catalytic performance of Cu-SAPO-34 after hydrothermal treatment (Cu-SAPO-34H). The textural properties, morphologies, structural feature, acidity, redox characteristic, and surface-active species of the fresh and hydrothermally aged samples were analyzed using various characterization methods. The systematical characterization results revealed that increases of 28% of the isolated Cu2+ active species (Cu2+-2Z, Cu (OH)+-Z) mainly from bulk CuO and 50% of the Brønsted acid sites, the high dispersion of isolated Cu2+ active component as well as the Brønsted acid sites were mainly responsible for the accepted catalytic activity of these two hydrothermally aged samples, especially for P-Cu-SAPO-34H.

The investigation of the NH3-SCR performance of a copper-based AEI-CHA intergrown zeolite catalyst

This work prepared an ISAPO-34/SAPO-18 intergrown zeolite using phosphate organoamine as the structure guiding agent. Physical-chemical characterizations by XRD, SEM, TG, and BET showed that the SAPO-34/SAPO-18 presents a cross-stacked cubic block-like microscopic morphology, with characteristic diffusive diffraction peaks at 2θ = 16–18° and 30–33° and a specific surface area of 557 m2 g−1. The series of copper-based catalysts prepared from SAPO-34/SAPO-18 showed a shift of the active temperature window to a lower temperature with increasing copper content. Moreover, the Brønsted acid site decreased significantly due to copper ion exchange and zeolite structure framework damage. Among them, the 1.2 wt% sample showed the widest active temperature window, with a T90 range of 175–435°C. After low-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment, the zeolite structure was eroded and the catalyst activity deteriorated significantly.
