Chemical Flexibility of Atomically Precise Metal Clusters

Ligand-protected metal clusters possess hybrid properties that seamlessly combine an inorganic core with an organic ligand shell, imparting them exceptional chemical flexibility and unlocking remarkable application potential in diverse fields. Leveraging chemical flexibility to expand the library of available materials and stimulate the development of new functionalities is becoming an increasingly pressing requirement. This Review focuses on the origin of chemical flexibility from the structural analysis, including intra-cluster bonding, inter-cluster interactions, cluster-environments interactions, metal-to-ligand ratios, and thermodynamic effects. In the introduction, we briefly outline the development of metal clusters and explain the differences and commonalities of M(I)/M(I/0) coinage metal clusters. Additionally, we distinguish the bonding characteristics of metal atoms in the inorganic core, which give rise to their distinct chemical flexibility. Section 2 delves into the structural analysis, bonding categories, and thermodynamic theories related to metal clusters. In the following sections 3 to 7, we primarily elucidate the mechanisms that trigger chemical flexibility, the dynamic processes in transformation, the resultant alterations in structure, and the ensuing modifications in physical-chemical properties. Section 8 presents the notable applications that have emerged from utilizing metal clusters and their assemblies. Finally, in section 9, we discuss future challenges and opportunities within this area.

Recent Trends in Group 11 Hydrogen Bonding

Conventional hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) has been extensively studied in organic and biological systems. However, its role in transition metal chemistry, particularly with Group 11 metals (i. e. Cu, Ag, Au) as hydrogen bond acceptors, remains relatively unexplored. Through a combination of experimental techniques, such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and computational calculations, several aspects of H-bonding interactions with Group 11 metals are examined, shedding light on its impact on structural motifs and reactivity. These include bond strengths, geometries, and effects on electronic structures. Understanding the intricacies of hydrogen bonding within transition metal chemistry holds promise for various applications, including catalytic transformations, the construction of molecular assemblies, synthesis of complexes displaying anticancer activities, or luminescence applications (e. g. Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence, TADF). This review encompasses the most significant recent advances, challenges, and future prospects in this emerging field.

Pyrazolate vs. phenylethynide: direct exchange of the anionic bridging ligand in a cyclic trinuclear silver complex

Cyclic trinuclear Ag(I) pyrazolate interacts with phenylacetylene forming a mix-ligand complex in which one pyrazolate ligand is changed to phenylethynide. The CC- fragment coordinates only to two silver(I) atoms via one carbon atom demonstrating unique μ2-η1 σ-coordination with close Ag-C bond lengths and Ag-C-C angles. The complex exhibits blue emission under UV irradiation.

From Mono- to Polynuclear 2-(Diphenylphosphino)pyridine-Based Cu(I) and Ag(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and DFT Calculations

A series of monometallic Ag(I) and Cu(I) halide complexes bearing 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (PyrPhos, L) as a ligand were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The structure of most of the derivatives was unambiguously established by X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing the formation of mono-, di-, and tetranuclear complexes having general formulas MXL3 (M = Cu, X = Cl, Br; M = Ag, X = Cl, Br, I), Ag2X2L3 (X = Cl, Br), and Ag4X4L4 (X = Cl, Br, I). The Ag(I) species were compared to the corresponding Cu(I) analogues from a structural point of view. The formation of Cu(I)/Ag(I) heterobimetallic complexes MM'X2L3 (M/M' = Cu, Ag; X = Cl, Br, I) was also investigated. The X-ray structure of the bromo-derivatives revealed the formation of two possible MM'Br2L3 complexes with Cu/Ag ratios, respectively, of 7:1 and 1:7. The ratio between Cu and Ag was studied by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) measurements. The structure of the binuclear homo- and heterometallic derivatives was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing the tendency of the PyrPhos ligands not to maintain the bridging motif in the presence of Ag(I) as the metal center.

Molecularly Engineered Room-Temperature Phosphorescence for Biomedical Application: From the Visible toward Second Near-Infrared Window

Phosphorescence, characterized by luminescent lifetimes significantly longer than that of biological autofluorescence under ambient environment, is of great value for biomedical applications. Academic evidence of fluorescence imaging indicates that virtually all imaging metrics (sensitivity, resolution, and penetration depths) are improved when progressing into longer wavelength regions, especially the recently reported second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) window. Although the emission wavelength of probes does matter, it is not clear whether the guideline of "the longer the wavelength, the better the imaging effect" is still suitable for developing phosphorescent probes. For tissue-specific bioimaging, long-lived probes, even if they emit visible phosphorescence, enable accurate visualization of large deep tissues. For studies dealing with bioimaging of tiny biological architectures or dynamic physiopathological activities, the prerequisite is rigorous planning of long-wavelength phosphorescence, being aware of the cooperative contribution of long wavelengths and long lifetimes for improving the spatiotemporal resolution, penetration depth, and sensitivity of bioimaging. In this Review, emerging molecular engineering methods of room-temperature phosphorescence are discussed through the lens of photophysical mechanisms. We highlight the roles of phosphorescence with emission from visible to NIR-II windows toward bioapplications. To appreciate such advances, challenges and prospects in rapidly growing studies of room-temperature phosphorescence are described.

Recent progress in dichalcophosphate coinage metal clusters and superatoms

Atomically precise clusters of group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) attract considerable attention owing to their remarkable structure and fascinating properties. One of the unique subclasses of these clusters is based on dichalcophosphate ligands of [(RO)₂PE₂]^- type (E = S or Se, and R = alkyl). These ligands successfully stabilise the most diverse Cu, Ag, and Au clusters and superatoms, spanning from simple ones to amazing assemblies featuring unusual structural and bonding patterns. It is noteworthy that such complicated clusters are assembled directly from cheap and simple reagents, metal(I) salts and dichalcophosphate anions. This reaction, when performed in the presence of a hydride or other anion sources, or foreign metal ions, results in hydrido- or anion-templated homo- or heteronuclear structures. In this feature article, we survey the recent advances in this exciting field, highlighting the powerful synthetic capabilities of the system "a metal(I) salt - [(RO)₂PX₂]^- ligands - a templating anion or borohydride" as an inexhaustible platform for the creation of new atomically precise clusters, superatoms, and nanoalloys.

Near-white light emission from single crystals of cationic dinuclear gold(I) complexes with bridged diphosphine ligands

Three cationic dinuclear Au(I) complexes containing acetonitrile (AN) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized: [μ-L_Me(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (1), [μ-L_Et(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (2), and [μ-L_iPr(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (3) (L_Me = {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, L_Et = {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and L_iPr = {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}). The unique structures of complexes 1-3 with two P-Au(I)-AN rods bridged by rigid diphosphine ligands were determined through X-ray analysis. The Au(I)-Au(I) distances observed for complexes 1-3 were as short as 2.9804-3.0457 Å, indicating an aurophilic interaction between two Au(I) atoms. Unlike complexes 2 and 3, complex 1 incorporated CH₂Cl₂ into the crystals as crystalline solvent molecules. Luminescence studies in the crystalline state revealed that complexes 1 and 2 mainly exhibited bluish-purple phosphorescence (PH) at 293 K: the former had a PH peak wavelength at 415 nm with the photoluminescence quantum yield Φ_PL = 0.12, and the latter at 430 nm with Φ_PL = 0.13. Meanwhile, complex 3 displayed near-white PH, that is dual PH with two PH bands centered at 425 and 580 nm with Φ_PL = 0.44. The PH spectra and lifetimes of complexes 2 and 3 were measured in the temperature range of 77-293 K. The two PH bands observed for complex 3 were suggested to originate from the two emissive excited triplet states, which were in thermal equilibrium. From theoretical calculations, the dual PH observed for complex 3 is explained to occur from the two excited triplet states, T_1H and T_1L: the former exhibits a high-energy PH band (bluish-purple) and the latter exhibits a low-energy PH band (orange). The T_1H state is considered ³ILCT with a structure similar to that of the S₀-optimized structure. Conversely, the T_1L state is assumed to be a ³MLCT with a T₁-optimized structure, which has a short Au(I)-Au(I) bond and two bent rods (Au-AN). The thermal equilibrium between the two excited states is discussed based on computational calculations and photophysical data in the temperature range of 77-293 K. With regard to the crystal of complex 1, we were unable to precisely measure the temperature-dependent emission spectra and lifetimes, particularly at low temperatures, because the cooled crystals became irreversibly turbid over time.

Coinage Metal Bis(amidinate) Complexes as Building Blocks for Self-Assembled One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers

The pyridyl functionalized amidinate [{PyC≡CC(NDipp)₂ }Li(thf)₂ ]_n was used to synthesize a series of bis-amidinate complexes [{PyC≡CC(NDipp)₂ }₂ M₂ ] (M=Cu, Ag, Au) with fully supported metallophilic interactions. These metalloligands were then used as building blocks for the synthesis of one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers using Zn(hfac)₂ (hfac=hexaflouroacetylacetonate) for self-assembly. Interestingly, the three coordination polymers [{PyC≡CC(NDipp)₂ }₂ M₂ ][Zn(hfac)₂ ] (M=Cu, Ag, Au), exhibit a zig zag shape in the solid state. To achieve linear coordination geometry other connectors such as M'(acac) (M'=Ni, Co) (acac=acetylacetonate) were investigated. The thus obtained compounds [{PyC≡CC(NDipp)₂ }₂ Cu₂ ][M'(acac)₂ ] (M'=Ni, Co) are indeed linear heterobimetallic coordination polymers featuring a metalloligand backbone with fully supported metallophilic interactions.

Tris(2-Pyridyl)Arsine as a New Platform for Design of Luminescent Cu(I) and Ag(I) Complexes

The coordination behavior of tris(2-pyridyl)arsine (Py₃As) has been studied for the first time on the example of the reactions with CuI, CuBr and AgClO₄. When treated with CuI in CH₂Cl₂ medium, Py₃As unexpectedly affords the scorpionate complex [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂ only, while this reaction in MeCN selectively leads to the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. At the same time, the interaction of CuBr with Py₃As exclusively gives the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂Br₂]. It is interesting to note that the scorpionate [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂, upon fuming with a MeCN vapor (r.t., 1 h), undergoes quantitative dimerization into the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. The reaction of Py₃As with AgClO₄ produces complex [Ag@Ag₄(Py₃As)₄](CIO₄)₅ featuring a Ag-centered Ag₄ tetrahedral kernel. At ambient temperature, the obtained Cu(I) complexes exhibit an unusually short-lived photoluminescence, which can be tentatively assigned to the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of (M + X) LCT type (M = Cu, L = Py₃As; X = halogen). For the title Ag(I) complexes, QTAIM calculations reveal the pronounced argentophilic interactions for all short Ag∙∙∙Ag contacts (3.209–3.313 Å).

Controllable Synthesis and Luminescence Behavior of Tetrahedral Au@Cu4 and Au@Ag4 Clusters Supported by tris(2-Pyridyl)phosphine

We report herein a family of polynuclear complexes, [Au@Ag₄(Py₃P)₄]X₅ and [Au@Cu₄(Py₃P)₄]X₅ [X = NO₃, ClO₄, OTf, BF₄, SbF₆], containing unprecedented Au-centered Ag₄ and Cu₄ tetrahedral cores supported by tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine (Py₃P) ligands. The [Au@Ag₄]⁵⁺ clusters are synthesized via controlled substitution of the central Ag(I) ion in all-silver [Ag@Ag₄]⁵⁺ precursors by the reaction with Au(tht)Cl, while the [Au@Cu₄]⁵⁺ cluster is assembled through the treatment of a pre-organized [Au(Py₃P)₄]⁺ metallo-ligand with 4 equiv of a Cu(I) source. The structure of the Au@M₄ clusters has been experimentally and theoretically investigated to reveal very weak intermolecular Au-M metallophilic interactions. At ambient temperature, the designed compounds emit a modest turquoise-to-yellow luminescence with microsecond lifetimes. Based on the temperature-dependent photophysical experiments and DFT/TD-DFT computations, the emission observed has been assigned to an MLCT or LLCT type depending on composition of the cluster core.

Selective coordination of coinage metals using orthogonal ligand scaffolds

Group 11 metal complexes with their ability to form metallophilic interations are widely pursued to develop multifunctional luminescent materials. Heteronuclear coinage metal complexes are promising candidates to tune electronic and optical properties which are not readily accessed by their homometallic congeners. In this review, we present the concept of orthogonal ligands which are rationally designed to access heteronuclear coinage metal complexes and studied in terms of their photophysical properties. Bifunctional ligands containing soft and hard donor atoms have the potential of providing different coordination modes to selectively synthesise heterobimetallic complexes in a predictable manner. This review deals with ligand sets composed of pyridine, bipyridine- or iminopyridine-substituted NHCs featuring C-N coordination modes, phosphine-based N-heterocycles and amidinate ligand scaffolds comprising of P-N functionalities and mixed phosphine-phosphine oxide with P-O donor sites. Therefore, the scope of this perspective is the discussion of heteronuclear coinage metal complexes supported by recently developed bifunctional ligands in terms of their synthesis, coordination geometries and tunability of optical properties when compared to their homometallic analogues.

Four- and five-coordinate nickel(ii) complexes bearing new diphosphine–phosphonite and triphosphine–phosphite ligands: catalysts for N-alkylation of amines

A series of nickel(ii) complexes supported by the new tridentate P3 and tetradentate P4 ligands act efficiently as catalysts for the N-alkylation of primary amines with alcohols.

Alkynylgold(I) C3 -Chiral Concave Complexes: Aggregation and Luminescence

Chiral gold(I) acetylide trinuclear complexes 1-3 based on the cyclotribenzylene platform and terminal PR₃ ligands (R=Ph, Et, and Cy, respectively), were characterized and their light emission studied. They exhibited long-lived blue phosphorescence in CHCl₃ and a weak fluorescence in the UV. In MeOH/CHCl₃ mixtures of >1:1 volume ratio, 1 and 2 exhibited a new emission band at ca. 540 nm that developed at the expense of the UV emission. DLS studies demonstrated the presence of molecular aggregates of Ø 30-80 nm. The green emission observed in MeOH-rich solvent mixtures was therefore induced by aggregation, and could originate from Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. The AIE spectrum of 3 was observed only in solutions containing 99 % of MeOH, and correlated with its solid state emission. The AIE profiles of the enantiomers of 1 differed from that of rac-1, suggesting that the latter is a true racemate.

A photoluminescent thermometer made from a thermoresponsive tetranuclear gold complex and phosphor N630

Reaction of [(3-bdppmapy)(AuCl)₂] with NaHmba (3-bdppmapy = N,N'-bis-(diphenylphosphanylmethyl-3-aminopytidine, H₂mba = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) resulted in a new tetranuclear Au/P/S complex [(3-bdppmapy)₂(AuHmba)₃(AuCl)] (1). Upon excitation at 370 nm, 1 exhibited solid state, room temperature, green fluorescent emission (QY = 4.7%, τ = 2.58 ns) which was significantly enanced at lower temperatures due to strengthening of the Au-Au interaction. Different ratios of 1 with phosphor N630 in PMMA were used to make thermochromic photoluminescent films and fibres that could be fabricated into an optical thermometer sensitive over temperature ranges 80-300 K and 300-370 K.

Zn Coordination and the Identity of the Halide Ancillary Ligand Dramatically Influence the Excited-State Dynamics and Bimolecular Reactions of 2,3-Di(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[g]quinoxaline

The optical properties of coordination complexes with ligands containing nitrogen heterocycles have been extensively studied for decades. One subclass of these materials, metal complexes utilizing substituted pyrazines and quinoxalines as ligands, has been employed in a variety of photochemical applications ranging from photodynamic therapy to organic light-emitting diodes. A vast majority of this work focuses on characterization of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states in these metal complexes; however, literature reports rarely investigate the photophysics of the parent pyrazine or quinoxaline ligand or perform control experiments utilizing metal complexes that lack low-lying charge-transfer (CT) states in order to determine how metal-atom coordination influences the photophysical properties of the ligand. With this in mind, we examined the steady-state and time-resolved photophysics of 2,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[g]quinoxaline (dpb) and explored how the coordination of ZnX₂ (X = Cl^-, Br^-, I^-) affects the photophysical properties of dpb. In dpb, we find that the dominant mode of deactivation from the singlet excited state is intersystem crossing (ISC). Coordination of ZnX₂ perturbs the relative energies of the ππ* and nπ* excited states of dpb, leading to drastically different rates of ISC as well as radiative and nonradiative decay in the [Zn(dpb)X₂] complexes compared to dpb. These differences in the rates change the dominant singlet-excited-state decay pathway from ISC in dpb to a mixture of ISC and fluorescence in [Zn(dpb)Cl₂] and [Zn(dpb)Br₂] and to nonradiative decay in [Zn(dpb)I₂]. Coordination of ZnX₂ and the choice of the halide ligand also have profound effects on the rate constants for excited-state bimolecular reactions, including triplet-triplet annihilation and oxygen quenching. These results demonstrate that metal coordination, even in complexes lacking low-lying CT states, and the choice of the ancillary ligand can dramatically alter the photophysical properties of chromophores containing nitrogen heterocycles.

Comprehensive Investigation of the Photophysical Properties of Alkynylcoumarin Gold(I) Complexes

Six gold(I) complexes (R₃P-Au-Coum) containing three different alkynylcoumarin chromophores (Coum) with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing characteristics and two different water-soluble phosphanes (PR₃ = PTA (a) and DAPTA (b)) have been synthesized (1a,b, unsubstituted coumarin; 2a,b, 4-methyl substituted coumarin; 3a,b, 3-chloro and 4-methyl substituted coumarin). A comprehensive study of the photophysical properties of the R₃P-Au-Coum, together with their propynyloxycoumarin precursors 1-3, was performed in solution at room and low temperatures. Spectral and photophysical characteristics of the R₃P-Au-Coum essentially depend on the electronic characteristics of the propynyloxycoumarin ligand. The presence of the Au(I) atom was found to be responsible for an increase of the intersystem crossing, with triplet state quantum yield values, ϕ_T, ranging from ∼0.05 to 0.35 and high coumarin phosphorescence quantum yield values for derivatives 1 and 2; fluorescence dominates the deactivation in derivatives 3. Efficient singlet oxygen photosensitization was observed for the new compounds 3a,b. From TDDFT calculations, the relevant HOMO and LUMO of the compounds, i.e., those involved in the transitions, are dominated by the frontier orbitals associated with the coumarin core. The Au(I)-phosphane structure introduces a new transition assigned to an intraligand transition involving the phosphane ligand, and π(C≡C) system, to the p orbitals of phosphorus and gold atoms.

Mechanochemical synthesis of mononuclear gold(I) halide complexes of diphosphine ligands with tuneable luminescent properties

A mechanochemical method is reported for the synthesis of Au(diphos)X complexes of diphosphine (diphos = XantPhos and N-XantPhos) ligands and halide ions (X = Cl and I). The Au(XantPhos)X (1: X = Cl; 2: X = I) and Au(N-XantPhos)Cl (3) complexes exhibited either yellowish green (1) or bluish green (2) emission, whereas 3 was seemingly non-emissive in the solid state at room temperature. Blue- (2B) and bluish green (2G) luminescent concomitant solvates of 2 were obtained by recrystallization. Luminescent colour changes from blue (2B) or bluish green (2G) to yellow were observed when these forms were subjected to mechanical stimulus, while the original emission colour can be recovered in the presence of solvent vapours. Moreover, the luminescence of 2B can be reversibly altered between blue and yellow by heating/cooling-cycles. These results demonstrate the power of mechanochemistry in the rapid (4 min reaction time), efficient (up to 98% yield) and greener synthesis of luminescent and stimuli-responsive gold(I) complexes.
