Synthetic and analytical considerations for the preparation of amorphous metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid porous materials presenting several tuneable properties, allowing them to be utilised for a wide range of applications. To date, focus has been on the preparation of novel crystalline MOFs for specific applications. Recently, interest in amorphous MOFs (aMOFs), defined by their lack of correlated long-range order, is growing. This is due to their potential favourable properties compared to their crystalline equivalents, including increased defect concentration, improved processability and gas separation ability. Direct synthesis of these disordered materials presents an alternative method of preparation to post-synthetic amorphisation of a crystalline framework, potentially allowing for the preparation of aMOFs with varying compositions and structures, and very different properties to crystalline MOFs. This perspective summarises current literature on directly synthesised aMOFs, and proposes methods that could be utilised to modify existing syntheses for crystalline MOFs to form their amorphous counterparts. It outlines parameters that could discourage the ordering of crystalline MOFs, before examining the potential properties that could emerge. Methodologies of structural characterisation are discussed, in addition to the necessary analyses required to define a topologically amorphous structure.

Exploring the Role of Ligand Connectivity in MOFs Mechanical Stability: The Case of MIL-100(Cr)

The key parameters governing the mechanical stability of highly porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are yet to be clearly understood. This study focuses on the role of the linker connectivity by investigating the mechanical stability of MIL-100(Cr), a mesoporous MOF with a hierarchical structure and a tritopic linker, and comparing it to MIL-101(Cr) having instead a ditopic linker. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the high-pressure behavior of MIL-100(Cr) with both solid and fluid pressure transmitting media (PTM). In the case of a solid medium, MIL-100(Cr) undergoes amorphization at about 0.6 GPa, while silicone oil as a PTM delays amorphization until 12 GPa due to the fluid penetration into the pores. Both of these values are considerably higher than those of MIL-101(Cr). MIL-100(Cr) also exhibits a bulk modulus almost ten times larger than that of MIL-101(Cr). This set of results coherently proves the superior stability of MIL-100(Cr) under compression. We ascribe this to the higher connectivity of the organic linker in MIL-100(Cr), which enhances its interconnection between the metal nodes. These findings shed light on the importance of linker connectivity in the mechanical stability of MOFs, a relevant contribution to the quest for designing more robust MOFs.

Mapping nanocrystalline disorder within an amorphous metal-organic framework

Intentionally disordered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) display rich functional behaviour. However, the characterisation of their atomic structures remains incredibly challenging. X-ray pair distribution function techniques have been pivotal in determining their average local structure but are largely insensitive to spatial variations in the structure. Fe-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) is a nanocomposite MOF, known for its catalytic properties, comprising crystalline nanoparticles and an amorphous matrix. Here, we use scanning electron diffraction to first map the crystalline and amorphous components to evaluate domain size and then to carry out electron pair distribution function analysis to probe the spatially separated atomic structure of the amorphous matrix. Further Bragg scattering analysis reveals systematic orientational disorder within Fe-BTC's nanocrystallites, showing over 10° of continuous lattice rotation across single particles. Finally, we identify candidate unit cells for the crystalline component. These independent structural analyses quantify disorder in Fe-BTC at the critical length scale for engineering composite MOF materials.

Defective iron based metal-organic frameworks derived from zero-valent iron for highly efficient fenton-like catalysis

Introducing crystal defects into iron based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) is regarded as a promising strategy to enhance Fenton-like performance. However, developing a facile and effective strategy to construct defective Fe-MOFs as highly efficient Fenton-like catalyst is still a challenge. Herein, MIL-100(Fe) (Def-MIL-100(Fe)) with missing ligands defects was synthesized by a simple heterogeneous reaction using zero-valent iron. The bisphenol A degradation efficiency in the Def-MIL-100(Fe)/H₂O₂ system reached up to 91.26% within 10 min at pH 4 with a low catalyst dosage of 0.05 g/L, while the perfect MIL-100(Fe) has almost no Fenton-like performance. It was observed that missing ligands defects in the Def-MIL-100(Fe) play a key role in the Fenton-like reaction. The missing ligands defects could increase the Lewis acidity for fast H₂O₂ adsorption and accelerate the electron transfer between Fe^II and Fe^III cycling, leading to faster and more·OH generation. Moreover, the missing ligands defects could promote the mass transfer for improving·OH utilization efficiency. This work provides a novel strategy to construct defective Fe-MOFs as highly efficient Fenton-like catalyst to degrade organic pollutants in water.

Modeling the Effect of Defects and Disorder in Amorphous Metal-Organic Frameworks

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (aMOFs) are a class of disordered framework materials with a defined local order given by the connectivity between inorganic nodes and organic linkers, but absent long-range order. The rational development of function for aMOFs is hindered by our limited understanding of the underlying structure-property relationships in these systems, a consequence of the absence of long-range order, which makes experimental characterization particularly challenging. Here, we use a versatile modeling approach to generate in silico structural models for an aMOF based on Fe trimers and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (BTC) linkers, Fe-BTC. We build a phase space for this material that includes nine amorphous phases with different degrees of defects and local order. These models are analyzed through a combination of structural analysis, pore analysis, and pair distribution functions. Therefore, we are able to systematically explore the effects of the variation of each of these features, both in isolation and combined, for a disordered MOF system, something that would not be possible through experiment alone. We find that the degree of local order has a greater impact on structure and properties than the degree of defects. The approach presented here is versatile and allows for the study of different structural features and MOF chemistries, enabling the derivation of design rules for the rational development of aMOFs.

Materials Formed by Combining Inorganic Glasses and Metal‐Organic Frameworks

Here, we propose the combination of glassy or crystalline metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with inorganic glasses to create novel hybrid composites and blends.The motivation behind this new composite approach is to improve the processability issues and mechanical performance of MOFs, whilst maintaining their ubiquitous properties. Herein, the precepts of successful composite formation and pairing of MOF and glass MOFs with inorganic glasses are presented. Focus is also given to the synthetic routes to such materials and the challenges anticipated in both their production and characterisation. Depending on their chemical nature, materials are classified as crystalline MOF‐glass composites and blends. Additionally, the potential properties and applications of these two classes of materials are considered, the key aim being the retention of beneficial properties of both components, whilst circumventing their respective drawbacks.

Multivariate analysis of disorder in metal-organic frameworks

The rational design of disordered frameworks is an appealing route to target functional materials. However, intentional realisation of such materials relies on our ability to readily characterise and quantify structural disorder. Here, we use multivariate analysis of pair distribution functions to fingerprint and quantify the disorder within a series of compositionally identical metal–organic frameworks, possessing different crystalline, disordered, and amorphous structures. We find this approach can provide powerful insight into the kinetics and mechanism of structural collapse that links these materials. Our methodology is also extended to a very different system, namely the melting of a zeolitic imidazolate framework, to demonstrate the potential generality of this approach across many areas of disordered structural chemistry.

Reticular Nanoscience: Bottom-Up Assembly Nanotechnology

The chemistry of metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) is perhaps the most diverse and inclusive among the chemical sciences, and yet it can be radically expanded by blending it with nanotechnology. The result is reticular nanoscience, an area of reticular chemistry that has an immense potential in virtually any technological field. In this perspective, we explore the extension of such an interdisciplinary reach by surveying the explored and unexplored possibilities that framework nanoparticles can offer. We localize these unique nanosized reticular materials at the juncture between the molecular and the macroscopic worlds, and describe the resulting synthetic and analytical chemistry, which is fundamentally different from conventional frameworks. Such differences are mirrored in the properties that reticular nanoparticles exhibit, which we described while referring to the present state-of-the-art and future promising applications in medicine, catalysis, energy-related applications, and sensors. Finally, the bottom-up approach of reticular nanoscience, inspired by nature, is brought to its full extension by introducing the concept of augmented reticular chemistry. Its approach departs from a single-particle scale to reach higher mesoscopic and even macroscopic dimensions, where framework nanoparticles become building units themselves and the resulting supermaterials approach new levels of sophistication of structures and properties.

MOFs-based nanoagent enables dual mitochondrial damage in synergistic antitumor therapy via oxidative stress and calcium overload

Targeting subcellular organelle with multilevel damage has shown great promise for antitumor therapy. Here, we report a core-shell type of nanoagent with iron (III) carboxylate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as shell while upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as core, which enables near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered synergistically reinforced oxidative stress and calcium overload to mitochondria. The folate decoration on MOFs shells enables efficient cellular uptake of nanoagents. Based on the upconversion ability of UCNPs, NIR light mediates Fe³⁺-to-Fe²⁺ reduction and simultaneously activates the photoacid generator (pHP) encapsulated in MOFs cavities, which enables release of free Fe²⁺ and acidification of intracellular microenvironment, respectively. The overexpressed H₂O₂ in mitochondria, highly reactive Fe²⁺ and acidic milieu synergistically reinforce Fenton reactions for producing lethal hydroxyl radicals (•OH) while plasma photoacidification inducing calcium influx, leading to mitochondria calcium overload. The dual-mitochondria-damage-based therapeutic potency of the nanoagent has been unequivocally confirmed in cell- and patient-derived tumor xenograft models in vivo.

Targeting damage to mitochondria has become an effective strategy antitumor therapies. Here, the authors report on nanoagents with upconversion nanoparticles as cores and photoacid-loaded MOFs as shells for NIR triggered Fenton reaction, acidification and calcium overload to provide synergistic mitochondrial damage.

Mixed hierarchical local structure in a disordered metal-organic framework

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of materials. However, their structural characterisation represents a significant challenge. Fe-BTC, and the commercial equivalent Basolite® F300, are MOFs with incredibly diverse catalytic ability, yet their disordered structures remain poorly understood. Here, we use advanced electron microscopy to identify a nanocomposite structure of Fe-BTC where nanocrystalline domains are embedded within an amorphous matrix, whilst synchrotron total scattering measurements reveal the extent of local atomic order within Fe-BTC. We use a polymerisation-based algorithm to generate an atomistic structure for Fe-BTC, the first example of this methodology applied to the amorphous MOF field outside the well-studied zeolitic imidazolate framework family. This demonstrates the applicability of this computational approach towards the modelling of other amorphous MOF systems with potential generality towards all MOF chemistries and connectivities. We find that the structures of Fe-BTC and Basolite® F300 can be represented by models containing a mixture of short- and medium-range order with a greater proportion of medium-range order in Basolite® F300 than in Fe-BTC. We conclude by discussing how our approach may allow for high-throughput computational discovery of functional, amorphous MOFs.
