Two new polyoxometalate-based metal-organic complexes for the detection of trace Cr(VI) and their capacitor performance

A stable hybrid catalyst (POM-PPPh3/L/Ni) for the reduction of toxic nitroarene compounds in water

Reduction of nitroarenes to aminoarenes using novel and selective catalysts is an important and desirable approach in green chemistry. In this work, a new heterogeneous nanocatalyst, POM-PPPh3/L/Ni, was designed and prepared via functionalizing a Keggin-type polyoxometalate (H3PMo12O40) with (3-bromopropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide (BPPPh3Br) through strong electrostatic interactions to prepare [PMo12O40][PPPh3]3 (denoted as POM-PPPh3). The obtained compound was modified via nucleophilic attack of the nitrogen donor of a multidentate Schiff base ligand (L) on its propyl chain to produce [PMo12O40][PPPh3/L]2 (denoted as POM-PPPh3/L), which was finally metallated with nickel cations to achieve [PMo12O40][PPPh3/L/Ni]2 (denoted as POM-PPPh3/L/Ni). After full characterization of the prepared material with various physicochemical methods, its catalytic behavior was investigated in the catalytic nitroarene reduction. The influence of various factors on catalytic conversion and selectivity was considered. The synthesized nanocatalyst showed excellent performance in the reduction of nitroarenes in aqueous media in the presence of NaBH4 as a reducing agent. Mild reaction conditions and a short reaction time (10 min) are the prominent features of this new nanocatalyst. In addition, the catalyst was recovered and reused for up to four cycles of catalytic reduction without any significant loss of conversion.

Six polyoxotungstate-based transition metal compounds for electrochemical capacitor application and a comparative analysis of factors affecting capacitances

Six different polyoxotungstate-based transition metal complexes were synthesized, namely [Cu5(2,2'-bpy)5(μ2-Cl)2(PO4)2(H2O)2][HPW12O40]·2H2O (1), [Cu1.5(2,2'-bpy)1.5(inic)2(H2O)1.5]3[H1.5PW12O40]2·16.25H2O (2), [Cu(2,2'-bpy)2]2[SiW12O40]·10H2O (3), [Zn(phen)3]2[PWVWVI11O40]·5H2O (4), [Zn(phen)2(H2O)]2[SiW12O40]·2H2O (5), and [Zn(2,2'-bpy)2]2[SiW12O40] (6) (2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, inic = isonicotinic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). Compound 1 is based on [HPW12O40]2- anions, which are accommodated within the open channels of a supramolecular network formed by novel Cu-P-Cl coordination clusters. Compound 2 is constructed from [H1.5PW12O40]1.5- and novel [Cu1.5(2,2'-bpy)1.5(inic)2(H2O)1.5]+ coordination fragments, and polyoxoanions are encapsulated within the pores created by the copper coordination fragments, resulting in a unique three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. Compound 3 is a two-dimensional structure formed through the covalent linkage between [SiW12O40]4- and [Cu(2,2'-bpy)2]2+. Compound 4 is a supramolecular architecture formed by [PWVWVI11O40]4- and [Zn(phen)3]2+ coordination fragments, while compound 5 is a supramolecular structure based on POM bi-supported Zn coordination complexes. Compound 6 is a two-dimensional framework structure constituted by [SiW12O40]4- and [Zn(2,2'-bpy)2]2+via covalent interactions. In addition, electrochemical measurement results show that the copper-based tungstate compounds 1-3 and zinc-based tungstate compounds 4-6 exhibit different performances and durabilities as electrochemical capacitors (compound 1 shows the highest specific capacitance of 94.0 F g-1 at 1.5 A g-1, whereas compound 6 maintains the best cycling stability with the capacity retention of 80.7% after 1000 cycles at 4 A g-1.). This study contributes to the development of POM-based transition metal complexes with high capacitance by providing insights into the design and synthesis process.

Four octamolybdate compounds with properties of organic dye adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Hydrothermal synthesis was used to create four different POM-based compounds, namely {[Co(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)0.5(ξ-Mo8O26)0.5]}·H2O (1), [Co(Hptpm)2(δ-Mo8O26)]·H2O (2), [Co(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)] (3) and [Zn(Hptpm)2(β-Mo8O26)] (4) (ptpm = 4-[3-(3-pyridine-2-yl-[1,2,4]triazol-4-yl)-propyl]-morpholine). 1-4 containing different octamolybdate isomers were characterized. Compounds 1-4 showed good electrochemical performance and can be utilized as bifunctional sensors for NO2-, H2O2, Cr(VI) and Fe(III). Taking compound 1 as an example, the detection limits are 0.081 μM for NO2-, 0.072 μM for H2O2, 0.054 μM for Cr(VI) and 0.063 μM for Fe(III), respectively. Compounds 1-4 have good capacitance. Moreover, compounds 1-4 also show good adsorption properties for organic cationic dyes. The cationic dyes include methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and neutral red (NR). In addition, 1-4 have excellent characteristics that can reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by photocatalytic technology. Within 30 min, the reduction rates were 95.85% for 1, 93.99% for 2, 90.29% for 3 and 88.18% for 4.

Polyoxometalate-Viologen Thermochromic Hybrids for Organic Amine Detectors and Memristors with Temperature-Regulating Resistance Switching Characteristics

There are relatively few reports on the combination of viologen and polyoxometalates (POMs). Herein, we successfully synthesized three viologen-POM-based compounds by in situ transformation of ligands under hydrothermal conditions, namely, {M^II(1,4-cby)₂[H₂(γ-Mo₈O₂₆)]}·nH₂O (1: M = Ni, n = 4; 2: M = Co, n = 6), and [Ni^II(1,3-cby)(H₂O)₄(β-Mo₈O₂₆)_0.5]·2H₂O (3) (1,4-cby·Cl = 1-(4-carboxy-benzyl)-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium, 1,3-cby·Cl = 1-(3-carboxy-benzyl)-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium). Isostructural compounds 1 and 2 exhibit two-dimensional (2D) layer structures with POMs as linking nodes, while compound 3 shows a one-dimensional (1D) metal-organic chain with dissociative POM anions. When the temperature increases, compounds 1-3 show good reversible thermochromism properties and also have a fluorescence quenching effect. Moreover, compounds 1-3 can also be used as detectors for organic amines, especially in the atmosphere of ammonia, ethylenediamine, and diethylamine with an obvious discoloration effect. In addition, compound 1 was used as a material for the preparation of memristors with superior properties (distinct temperature-adjusted resistive switching properties). It shows bipolar resistive switching (RS) behavior at different temperatures of 20, 50, and 100 °C. The results show that the 1-based memristor has good thermal stability, which is important for high-temperature environment applications. It also shows that crystalline viologen-POM-based compounds are ideal candidates for making memristors.

Structure, Optical and Magnetic Properties of Two Isomeric 2-Bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) Complexes [Cu(C6H9NBr)2(NO3)2] with Very Different Binding Motives

Two isomeric 2-bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) complexes [Cu(C₆H₉NBr)₂(NO₃)₂] with 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine (L¹) and 2-bromo-4-methylpyridine (L²) were synthesized as air-stable blue materials in good yields. The crystal structures were different with [Cu(L¹)₂(NO₃)₂] (CuL¹) crystallizing in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c, while the 4-methyl derivative CuL² was solved and refined in triclinic P1¯. The orientation of the Br substituents in the molecular structure (anti (CuL¹) vs. syn (CuL²) conformations) and the geometry around Cu(II) in an overall 4 + 2 distorted coordination was very different with two secondary (axially elongated) Cu-O bonds on each side of the CuN₂O₂ basal plane in CuL¹ or both on one side in CuL². The two Br substituents in CuL² come quite close to the Cu(II) centers and to each other (Br⋯Br ~3.7 Å). Regardless of these differences, the thermal behavior (TG/DTA) of both materials is very similar with decomposition starting at around 160 °C and CuO as the final product. In contrast to this, FT-IR and Raman frequencies are markedly different for the two isomers and the UV-vis absorption spectra in solution show marked differences in the π-π* absorptions at 263 (CuL²) or 270 (CuL¹) nm and in the ligand-to-metal charge transfer bands at around 320 nm which are pronounced for CuL¹ with the higher symmetry at the Cu(II) center, but very weak for CuL². The T-dependent susceptibility measurements also show very similar results (µ_eff = 1.98 µ_B for CuL¹ and 2.00 µ_B for CuL² and very small Curie-Weiss constants of about -1. The EPR spectra of both complexes show axial symmetry, very similar averaged g values of 2.123 and 2.125, respectively, and no hyper-fine splitting.

Polyoxometalate-Incorporated Metal-Organic Network as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Aryl Alkenes

Selective oxidation of aryl alkenes is important for chemical synthesis reactions, in which the key lies in the rational design of efficient catalysts. Herein, four polyoxometalate (POM)-incorporated metal-organic networks, with the formulas of [Co(ttb)(H₂O)₃]₂[SiMo₁₂O₄₀]·2H₂O (1), [Co(ttb)(H₂O)₂]₂[SiW₁₂O₄₀]·8H₂O (2), [Zn(Httb)(H₂ttb)][BW₁₂O₄₀]·9H₂O (3) and {[Zn(H₂O)₃(ttb)]₄[Zn₃(H₂O)₆]}[H₃SiW_10.5Zn_1.5O₄₀]₂·24H₂O (4) (ttb = 1,3,5-tri(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene), were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Structural analysis showed that compound 1 consists of a POM-encapsulated three-dimensional (3-D) supramolecular framework; compound 2 is composed of a POM-supported 3-D coordination network; and compounds 3-4 show POM-incorporated 3-D supramolecular networks. Using selective catalytic oxidation of styrene as the model reaction, compounds 1-4 as heterogeneous catalysts display excellent performance with the double advantages of high styrene conversion and benzaldehyde selectivity owing to the synergistic effect among POM anions and transition metal (TM) centers. Among them, compound 1 exhibits the highest performance with ca. 96% styrene conversion and ca. 99% benzaldehyde selectivity in 3 h. In addition, compound 1 also displays excellent substrate compatibility, good reusability, and structural stability. Thus, a plausible reaction pathway for the selective oxidation of styrene is proposed. This study on the structure-function relationship paves a way for the rational design of POM-based heterogeneous catalysts for important catalysis applications.

Cobalt complexes tuned by Anderson-type polyoxometalates and bis-amide derivative ligands featuring a 'V'-like connector for efficient ampere sensing and the visible-light catalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

To exploit polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic complexes (MOCs) with outstanding electro- and photo-chemical performances, two new bis-amide derivative N-donor ligands featuring a 'V'-like connector, 4,4'-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)phenylmethane (L¹) and 4,4'-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)phenylketone (L²), were designed and reacted with Anderson-type POMs in the presence of Co(II) ions under solvothermal conditions, which generated four MOCs: [Co₂(L¹)₂(AlMo₆H₅O₂₄)]·4H₂O (1), [Co₂(HL¹)₂(H₂O)₆(TeMo₆O₂₄)]·2H₂O (2), [Co₂(HL²)₂(H₂O)₄[AlMo₆H₆O₂₄]₂]·5H₂O (3), and [Co₂(HL²)₂(H₂O)₆(TeMo₆O₂₄)]·2H₂O (4). All the complexes showed supramolecular structures via hydrogen bond interaction, which resulted from the 2D layers for 1, the satellite-like structural units for 2 and 4, but the 1D chains for 3. In these structures, the POMs and organic ligands exhibited different coordination modes. Both 2 and 4 showed efficient ampere sensing activities for Cr(VI) with lower limits of detection of 0.029 and 0.038 μM, respectively. Complexes 1 and 2 showed good visible-light catalytic behavior toward the reduction of Cr(VI), which offers more chances for developing electrochemical sensors and photocatalysts for Cr(VI).

Polyoxometalate Functionalized Sensors: A Review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a class of metal oxide complexes with a large structural diversity. Effective control of the final chemical and physical properties of POMs could be provided by fine-tuning chemical modifications, such as the inclusion of other metals or non-metal ions. In addition, the nature and type of the counterion can also impact POM properties, like solubility. Besides, POMs may combine with carbon materials as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide or carbon nanotubes to enhance electronic conductivity, with noble metal nanoparticles to increase catalytic and functional sites, be introduced into metal-organic frameworks to increase surface area and expose more active sites, and embedded into conducting polymers. The possibility to design POMs to match properties adequate for specific sensing applications turns them into highly desirable chemicals for sensor sensitive layers. This review intends to provide an overview of POM structures used in sensors (electrochemical, optical, and piezoelectric), highlighting their main functional features. Furthermore, this review aims to summarize the reported applications of POMs in sensors for detecting and determining analytes in different matrices, many of them with biochemical and clinical relevance, along with analytical figures of merit and main virtues and problems of such devices. Special emphasis is given to the stability of POMs sensitive layers, detection limits, selectivity, the pH working range and throughput.

Four POM-based complexes modified by multi-nuclear clusters: structures, photocatalytic, supercapacitor and chromogenic properties

A series of POM-based compounds by tuning coordination groups and spacers of ligands: electrocatalytic, capacitive and photoelectrocatalytic properties

A series of POM-based compounds can be used as amperometric detectors for NO2− and Cr(vi). They also have capacitive properties and can effect the high-efficiency photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

Two polymolybdate-directed Zn(ii) complexes tuned by a new bis-pyridine-bis-amide ligand with a diphenylketone spacer for efficient ampere sensing and dye adsorption

Two polymolybdate-based Zn(ii) complexes were constructed from a new bis-pyridine-bis-amide ligand, which can be used as electrocatalysts and electrochemical sensors for Cr(vi), KBrO3, H2O2 and AA, and exhibit selective adsorption of CV and MB.

A series of polyoxometalate compounds by tuning N sites and numbers of ligands: syntheses, characterization and electrochemical sensing, and photocatalytic and supercapacitor properties

Using morpholine derivatives with different N sites and numbers, we synthesized seven compounds by a hydrothermal method. They can photocatalytically degrade organic dyes and reduce Cr(vi) and can be used as electrochemical sensors. 4 has capacitor performance.

N-Donor flexible ligands for constructing polyoxometalate-based metal–organic frameworks as multifunctional electrocatalysts

Two POMOFs, CUST-631 and CUST-632, were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then were directly prepared as electrode materials to explore the electrocatalytic properties for reduction of BrO3− and NO2− ions and oxidation properties towards AA.

Capped Keggin Type Polyoxometalate-Based Inorganic-Organic Hybrids Involving In Situ Ligand Transformation as Supercapacitors and Efficient Electrochemical Sensors for Detecting Cr(VI)

To construct polyoxometalate-based complexes as electrode materials for supercapacitors and electrochemical sensors, we intentionally used in situ ligand transformation during the reaction. Two complexes based on polyoxometalates capped by zinc ions, H{Zn₄(DIBA)₄[(DIBA)(HPO₂)]₂(α-PMo^VI₈Mo^V₄O₄₀Zn₂)} (1) and [ε-PMo^V₈Mo^VI₄O₃₇(OH)₃Zn₄(HDBIBA)₂]·6H₂O (2) [DIBA = 3,5-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzoic acid, and DBIBA = 3,5-bis(1H-benzoimidazol-1-yl)benzoic acid], have been prepared successfully. The DIBA and DBIBA ligands were generated in situ from initial materials 3,5-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzonitrile and 3,5-di(1H-benzoimidazol-1-yl)benzonitrile. The three-dimensional structure of 1 consisted of two-dimensional interpenetrating layers and polyoxometalate-based chains composed of bicapped α-PMo₁₂Zn₂ polyoxoanions and phosphite-modified DIBA ligands. In 2, a kind of tetracapped ε-PMo₁₂Zn₄ polyoxoanion exists, which was further linked by DBIBA ligands into a one-dimensional chain. Two complexes could be employed as not only electrode materials for supercapacitors with specific capacitances of 171.17 F g^-1 for 1 and 146.77 F g^-1 for 2 at 0.5 A g^-1 but also efficient electrochemical sensors for detecting Cr(VI) with excellent limits of detection of 0.026 μM for 1 and 0.035 μM for 2, which represents a hopeful approach for exploiting polyoxometalate-based complexes as supercapacitor and electrochemical sensor materials.

A series of polyoxometalate-based hybrid complexes constructed by a tripodal ligand containing mixed N/O donors

We designed two synthetic strategies using identical ligands to construct six POM-based complexes. These complexes can act as amperometric sensors for the detection of Cr(vi), Fe(iii) and H2O2 and fluorescence sensors for sensing Cr3+.
