(C3N2H5)3Sb2I9 and (C3N2H5)3Bi2I9: ferroelastic lead-free hybrid perovskite-like materials as potential semiconducting absorbers

Discrete Hexa- and Binuclear Heterometallic Iodobismuthate(III) Complexes with Cu(I) and Ag(I)

The rare examples of discrete anionic halobismuthates(III) with group 11 elements were obtained. Those are (3-MePyH)6[Bi4Cu2I20] (1) and (3,5-MePyC6)3[BiAgI7]2 (2) (3-MePyH = 3-methylpyridinium cation, 3,5-MePyC6=1,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyridinium)hexane dication). Both complexes were isolated as pure phases; the optical band gaps for 1 and 2 are 1.75 and 2.23 eV, respectively.

Ternary Complexes of BiI3/CuI and SbI3/CuI with Tetrahydrothiophene

Reactions of BiI3/CuI mixtures with tetrahydrothiophene (THT) in toluene produce 2-D sheet networks BiCu3I6(THT)n (n = 2, 3, or 4), depending on reaction conditions. All three structures are based on BiI6 octahedra, which share pairs of (μ2-I)2 with Cu3(THT)n units. BiCu3I6(THT)2 features Cu2(μ2-I)2 rhombs with close Cu···Cu interactions and is accompanied by formation of the very complex HBi3Cu12I22(THT)8. Reactions of SbI3/CuI with THT in toluene produced a SbCu3I6(THT)2 network shows Cu3(μ2-THT)2 units, like its Bi congener, but Cu6(μ2-I)6 barrels rather than rhombs. Isolated SbI3 units are stacked above the Cu6I6 barrels. A molecular compound, Sb3Cu3I12(THT)6 consists of a face-sharing Sb3I12 stack, in which the Cu-THT units are bonded in asymmetric fashion about the central SbI6. Metal-halide bonds were investigated via QTAIM and NLMO analyses, demonstrating that these bonds are largely ionic and occur between the Bi/Sb and I p orbitals. Hirshfeld analysis shows significant H···H and H···I interactions. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) reveals band edges for the Bi species of 1.71-1.82 eV, while those for the neutral Sb complexes are in the range of 1.94-2.06 eV. Mapping of the electronic structure via density of state calculations indicates population of antibonding Bi/Sb-I orbitals in the excited state.

Temperature symmetry breaking and properties of lead-free organic-inorganic hybrids: bismuth(III) iodide and antimony(III) iodide: (S(CH3)3)3[Bi2I9] and (S(CH3)3)3[Sb2I9]

We have synthesized and characterized two novel lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid crystals: (S(CH3)3)3[Bi2I9] (TBI) and (S(CH3)3)3[Sb2I9] (TSI). Thermal DSC, TG, and DTA analyses indicate structural phase transitions (PTs) in both compounds; TBI undergoes two structural phase transitions at 314.2/314.8 K (cooling/heating) and at 181.5 K of first (I ↔ II) and second order (II ↔ III), respectively. The crystal structures of TBI are refined for phases I (325 K), II (200 K) and III (100 K). TBI exhibits ferroelastic properties since both PTs are accompanied by a change in the symmetry of crystals: P63/mmc → C2/c (I → II) and C2/c → P1̄ (II → III). The presence of a ferroelastic domain structure has been confirmed by optical observations. In turn, TSI also reveals two PTs: I ↔ II (at 303.9/304.1 K) and II ↔ III (212.9/221.4 K). To compare and obtain insight into the mechanism of the PTs of TBI, we have carried out temperature dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Additionally, to confirm the change in the dynamical states of molecules in PTs, dielectric measurements have been carried out between 100 K and 400 K in the frequency range of 200 Hz to 2 MHz. Moreover, the measurements of the 1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and a second moment, M2, of the 1H NMR line have been undertaken in the temperature range between 100 and 300 K.

A chiral two-dimensional perovskite-like lead-free bismuth(III) iodide hybrid with high phase transition temperature

Bismuth(III) iodide perovskites have attracted great attention as lead-free hybrid semiconductors, but they mainly show zero- and one-dimensional structures. Herein, we report the first two-dimensional chiral perovskite-like bismuth(III) iodide hybrid [(S)-3-aminopyrrolidinium I]2Bi2/3I4 (1) with a high phase transition temperature of 408.8 K, higher than most of the reported chiral lead-free hybrid semiconductors.

Structural, Electric and Dynamic Properties of (Pyrrolidinium)3[Bi2I9] and (Pyrrolidinium)3[Sb2I9]: New Lead-Free, Organic-Inorganic Hybrids with Narrow Band Gaps

Hybrid organic-inorganic iodides based on Bi(III) and Sb(III) provide integrated functionalities through the combination of high dielectric constants, semiconducting properties and ferroic phases. Here, we report a pyrrolidinium-based bismuth (1) and antimony (2) iodides of (NC₄H₁₀)₃[M₂I₉] (M: Bi(III), Sb(III)) formula which are ferroelastic at room temperature. The narrow band gaps (~2.12 eV for 1 and 2.19 eV for 2) and DOS calculations indicate the semiconducting characteristics of both materials. The crystal structure consists of discrete, face-sharing bioctahedra [M₂I₉]^3- and disordered pyrrolidinium amines providing charge balance and acting as spacers between inorganic moieties. At room temperature, 1 and 2 accommodate orthorhombic Cmcm symmetry. 1 displays a complex temperature-induced polymorphism. It is stable up to 525 K and undergoes a sequence of low-temperature phase transitions (PTs) at 221/222 K (I ↔ II) and 189/190 K (II ↔ III) and at 131 K (IV→III), associated with the ordering of pyrrolidinium cations and resulting in Cmcm symmetry breaking. 2 undergoes only one PT at T = 215 K. The dielectric studies disclose a relaxation process in the kilohertz frequency region, assigned to the dynamics of organic cations, described well by the Cole-Cole relation. A combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, spin-lattice relaxation time of ¹H NMR, dielectric and calorimetric studies is used to determine the structural phase diagram, cation dynamics and electric properties of (NC₄H₁₀)₃[M₂I₉]_.

Water-Stable Hybrid Lead-Free Perovskite for Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistors

Negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors feature higher sensitivities and faster response speeds and thereby have particular applications in many fields. However, current NTC thermistors are mostly based on inorganic ceramic materials, which show obvious drawbacks in material synthesis, property modulation, and flexible film fabrication. Herein, we report, for the first time, the promising application of an inorganic-organic hybrid NTC thermistor. A new lead-free hybrid iodo bismuthate [1,1',1″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium)]Bi₂I₉ [denoted as (Me₃TMP)Bi₂I₉] was synthesized by a "double-free" strategy. (Me₃TMP)Bi₂I₉ features a lead-free binuclear bismuth iodine anion charge compensated by a "classic hydrogen-bond-free" cation. (Me₃TMP)Bi₂I₉ exhibits remarkable stability in water and UV light irradiation and shows the largest temperature sensitivity coefficient among all reported NTC materials. Theoretical calculation and detailed structural analysis disclose that the seriously distorted (BiI₆) octahedra are responsible for the intriguing NTC effect for (Me₃TMP)Bi₂I₉.

Pressure-Induced Ferroelastic Transition Drives a Large Shape Change in a Ni(II) Complex Single Crystal

Crystals with significant length reduction at an accessible low pressure are highly desirable for piezo-responsive devices. Here, we show a molecular crystal [Ni(en)₃](ox) (en = ethylenediamine and ox = oxalate anion) that exhibits an abrupt shape change with a contraction rate of ∼4.7% along its c axis near the phase transition pressure of ∼0.2 GPa. High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements reveal that this material undergoes a first-order ferroelastic transition from high-symmetry trigonal P3̅1c to low-symmetry monoclinic P2₁/n at ∼0.2 GPa. The oxalate anions serve as unique components, and their disorder-order transformation and rotation of 90° through cooperative intermolecular hydrogen bonding triggered unconventional anisotropic microsize contraction under compression, which can be appreciated visually. Such a prominent directional deformation at a low pressure driven by molecular motors of oxalate anions provides insights for the design of novel molecular crystal-based piezo-responsive switches and actuators in deep-sea environments.

Copper- and Silver-Containing Heterometallic Iodobismuthates: Features of Thermochromic Behavior

Nine heterometallic iodobismuthates with the general formula Cat₂{[Bi₂M₂I₁₀}] (M = Cu(I), Ag(I), Cat = organic cation) were synthesized. According to X-ray diffraction data, their crystal structures consisted of {Bi₂I₁₀} units interconnected with Cu(I) or Ag(I) atoms through I-bridging ligands, forming one-dimensional polymers. The compounds are thermally stable up to 200 °C. Optical band gaps (E_g), estimated at room temperature via diffuse reflectance measurements, range from 1.81 to 2.03 eV. Thermally induced changes in optical behavior (thermochromism) for compounds 1-9 were recorded, and general correlations were established. The thermal dependence of E_g appears to be close to linear for all studied compounds.

Supramolecular Diiodine-Bromostannate(IV) Complexes: Narrow Bandgap Semiconductors

Three supramolecular bromostannates(IV) with "trapped" diiodine molecules, Cat₂{[SnBr₆](I₂)} (Cat = Me₄N⁺ (1), 1-MePy⁺ (2) and 4-MePyH (3)), were synthesized. In all cases, I₂ linkers are connected with bromide ligands via halogen···halogen non-covalent interactions. Articles 1-3 were studied using Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The latter indicates that 1-3 are narrow band gap semiconductors.

Intercalation-driven ferroelectric-to-ferroelastic conversion in a layered hybrid perovskite crystal

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted intense interests due to their quantum well structure and tunable excitonic properties. As an alternative to the well-studied divalent metal hybrid perovskite based on Pb²⁺, Sn²⁺ and Cu²⁺, the trivalent metal-based (eg. Sb³⁺ with ns2 outer-shell electronic configuration) hybrid perovskite with the A₃M₂X₉ formula (A = monovalent cations, M = trivalent metal, X = halide) offer intriguing possibilities for engineering ferroic properties. Here, we synthesized 2D ferroelectric hybrid perovskite (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ with measurable in-plane and out-of-plane polarization. Interestingly, (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ can be intercalated with FeCl₄ ions to form a ferroelastic and piezoelectric single crystal, (TMA)₄-Fe(iii)Cl₄-Sb₂Cl₉. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the unusual mechanism of ferroelectric-ferroelastic crossover in these crystals.
