Organoplatinum Complex Exhibiting Aggregation-Enhanced Emission (AEE) and Dual-Channel Ion-Sensing Properties by Terminating the Molecular Configuration Transformation (MCT) and Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT)

Emitters produce weak emissions when they undergo structural changes such as molecular configuration transformation (MCT) or excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) but give out strong emissions after terminating these distortions. Herein, an organoplatinum complex, Pt-ppy-ABP, carrying a salicylaldehyde-based Schiff base unit is synthesized. It exhibits weak emission in dilute solutions but shows bright emission at the aggregated state or after interacting with F- and Zn2+. This suggests that it has an aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) property and holds potential in ion detection. Supported by theoretical calculations and femtosecond transient absorption results, this complex suffers excited-state structural changes including MCT from a square-planar configuration to a tetrahedral one, as well as intramolecular rotation of a monodentate ligand and ESIPT, showing weak emission in its solutions. At the aggregated state, it releases strong yellow emissions because of the restraints of MCT and ligand rotation. Upon interacting with F- or Zn2+, it emits bright-red or -green emissions, achieving detection limits of 10-7 M. The sensing mechanism is concluded as deprotonation- and coordination-induced ESIPT terminations, respectively. Given its AEE property and ion-responsive emissions, its application in information encryption is also explored. Finally, these findings should provide valuable clues for the developments of chemosensors with dual-channel recognition abilities.

Recent Advances in Organic Small-Molecule Fluorescent Probes for the Detection of Zinc Ions (Zn2+)

Zinc(II) ions (Zn2g) play crucial roles in the growth, propagation, and metabolism of animals, plants, and humans. Abnormal concentrations of Zn2+ in the environment and living organisms pose potential risks to environmental protection and human health. Therefore, it is imperative to develop rapid, reliable and in-situ detection methods for Zn2+ in both environmental and biological contexts. Furthermore, effective analytical methods are required for diagnosing diseases and understanding physiological metabolic mechanisms associated with Zn2+ concentration levels. Organic small-molecule fluorescent probes offer advantages such as fast, reliable, convenient, non-destructive detection capabilities and have significant application potential in Zn2+ detection and bioimaging; thus garnering extensive attention. Over the past two years alone, various organic small-molecule probes for Zn2+ based on different detection mechanisms and fluorophores have been rapidly developed. However, these probes still exhibit several limitations that need further resolution. In light of this context, we provide a comprehensive summary of the detection mechanisms, performance characteristics, and application scope of Zn2+ fluorescence probes since year 2022 while highlighting their advantages. We also propose solutions to address existing issues with these probes and outline future directions for their advancement. This review aims to serve as a valuable reference source offering insights into the development of advanced organic small-molecule-based fluorescence probes specifically designed for detecting Zn2+.

Ratiometric orange fluorescent and colorimetric highly sensitive imidazolium-bearing naphthoquinolinedione-based probes for CN- sensing in aqueous solutions and bio-samples

The widespread use of cyanide (CN^-) in industry results in contamination of various effluents such as drain, lake, and tap water, an imminent danger to the environment and human health. We prepared naphthoquinolinedione (cyclized; 1-5) and anthracenedione (un-cyclized) probes (6-7) for selective detection of CN^-. The addition of CN^- to the probe solutions (1-5) resulted in a color change from pale green to orange under 365 nm illumination. The nucleophilic addition of CN^- to C2 of the imidazolium ring of the probes is responsible for selective CN^- detection. Among all probes, 1 gave the lowest fluorescence-based LOD of 0.13 pM. In contrast, the un-cyclized probes (6 and 7) were substantially inferior to the cyclized counterparts (1 and 2, respectively) for detecting a trace amount of CN^-. The notably low LOD displayed by probe 1 was maintained in the detection of CN^- in real food samples, human fluids, and human brain cells. This is the first report studying imidazolium-bearing naphthoquinolinedione-based probes for CN^- sensing in 100% water.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Optical Properties of the Schiff Bases and Their Materials Obtained from o-Phenylenediamine

Two macrocyclic Schiff bases derived from o-phenylenediamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde L1 or 2-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde L2, respectively, were obtained and characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy (UV-vis, fluorescence and IR). X-ray crystal structure determination and DFT calculations for compounds confirmed their geometry in solution and in the solid phase. Moreover, intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure of L1 and L2 were analyzed using 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and the related 2D fingerprint plots. The 3D Hirschfeld analyses show that the most numerous interactions were found between hydrogen atoms. A considerable number of such interactions are justified by the presence of bulk tert-butyl groups in L2. The luminescence of L1 and L2 in various solvents and in the solid state was studied. In general, the quantum efficiency between 0.14 and 0.70 was noted. The increase in the quantum efficiency with the solvent polarity in the case of L1 was observed (λex = 350 nm). For L2, this trend is similar, except for the chloroform. In the solid state, emission was registered at 552 nm and 561 nm (λex = 350 nm) for L1 and L2, respectively. Thin layers of the studied compounds were deposited on Si(111) by the spin coating method or by thermal vapor deposition and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), spectroscopic ellipsometry and fluorescence spectroscopy. The ellipsometric analysis of thin materials obtained by thermal vapor deposition showed that the band-gap energy was 3.45 ± 0.02 eV (359 ± 2 nm) and 3.29 ± 0.02 eV (377 ± 2 nm) for L1/Si and L2/Si samples, respectively. Furthermore, the materials of the L1/Si and L2/Si exhibited broad emission. This feature can allow for using these compounds in LED diodes.

An ICT-guided ratiometric naphthalene-benzothiazole-based probe for the detection of cyanide with real-time applications in human breast cancer cells

A methoxynaphthalene benzothiazole conjugate (MNBTZ) armed with CC vinylic double bonds was synthesized and utilized for the selective detection of CN^- ions. The probe showed yellow fluorescence due to ICT from the methoxynaphthalene moiety to benzothiazole, which instantly changed to light purple upon the nucleophilic addition of CN^- to the vinylic double bond, inhibiting ICT due to the break-in conjugation. The effectiveness of the probe was proved by this brilliant ratiometric fluorescence change, which was achieved selectively as observed by experiments with competing anions. ¹H NMR titrations and DFT calculations support this mechanism. A low detection limit of 2.1(±0.0022) × 10^-8 M along with good fluorescence color change on solid TLC plates and human breast cancer cells makes it amenable to CN^- sensing.
