Variable dimensionality of the anion framework in four new borophosphates and fluoroborophosphates with short cutoff edges

Hydroxyl-Driven Enhanced Birefringence in Borophosphates

Borophosphates have become promising candidates for ultraviolet or deep-ultraviolet functional crystals. Through high-temperature solution method, four new borophosphates, K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH), were acquired successfully. Single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group, while P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) belongs to the centrosymmetric compound. It is worth mentioning that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) present the new fundamental building blocks [B2P2O11], [BP2O10H], and [BP2O9(OH)], respectively, as far as we know. Compared with K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) exhibit a larger optical anisotropy, further confirming the positive effect of hydroxyl groups on birefringence. UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra display that K2B2P2O9 and (NH4)2BP2O7(OH) have short UV cutoff edges. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations were conducted to comprehend their optical properties and electronic structures.

BaB2P2O8F2: A Fluoroborophosphate with [B2P2O8F2]∞ Layers and Deep-Ultraviolet Cutoff Edge

A fluoroborophosphate, BaB₂P₂O₈F₂, was successfully obtained. Its structure contains a novel [B₂P₂O₈F₂]_∞ layer containing six-membered rings, which is formed by the fundamental building block composed of three types of non-π-conjugated groups, [PO₄], [BO₄], and [BO₂F₂]. BaB₂P₂O₈F₂ has a deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edge (λ < 200 nm) and a tiny birefringence (Δn = 0.007 at 532 nm), which originates from the constituent non-π-conjugated groups. The title compound enriches the versatility of the fluoroborophosphates, encouraging further research into DUV materials in fluoroborophosphate systems.

Exploring Short-Wavelength Phase-Matching Nonlinear Optical Crystals by Employing KBe2BO3F2 as the Template

Exploration of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that are competent in generating short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV, λ ≤ 266 nm, and even deep-UV, λ ≤ 200 nm) coherent light output by direct second harmonic generation (SHG) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, four UV/deep-UV NLO crystals, M₂B₄SO₁₀ (M = K, Rb, and Cs) and Rb₃B₁₁PO₁₉F₃, were successfully synthesized by evolving the KBe₂BO₃F₂ (KBBF) structure into mixed-anionic borosulfate and fluoroborophosphate systems. They display functional [B₄SO₁₀]_∞ or [B₁₁PO₁₉F₃]_∞ KBBF-type layers that are composed of [BO₃], [BO₄], and [SO₄] groups or [BO₃], [BO₄], [BO₃F], and [PO₄] groups, respectively. Experimental characterization and numerical computation results indicate that these crystals possess exceptional NLO performance, including large SHG responses (0.9-1.7 × KDP at 1064 nm and 0.1-0.3 × β-BBO at 532 nm) and adequate birefringence to fulfill the SHG phase-matching (PM) condition at 266 nm. In particular, the shortest type-I PM wavelength (λ_PM) of Rb₃B₁₁PO₁₉F₃ reaches 180 nm, which implies that Rb₃B₁₁PO₁₉F₃ can become a prospective deep-UV NLO crystal. In addition, single crystals of K₂B₄SO₁₀, Rb₂B₄SO₁₀, and Cs₂B₄SO₁₀ are easily obtained by the high-temperature solution approach. This work will facilitate the discovery of short-wavelength PM NLO crystals by using the KBBF structure as the template.

(NH4)3B11PO19F3: a deep-UV nonlinear optical crystal with unique [B5PO10F]∞ layers

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can extend the output range of coherent light below 200 nm are pivotal materials for solid-state lasers. To date, KBe₂BO₃F₂ (KBBF) is the only usable crystal that can generate DUV coherent light by direct second harmonic generation (SHG), but the layered growth habit and toxic ingredients limit its application. Herein, we report a new fluoroborophosphate, (NH₄)₃B₁₁PO₁₉F₃ (ABPF), containing four different functional units: [BO₃], [BO₄], [BO₃F] and [PO₄]. ABPF exhibits a KBBF-like structure while eliminating the limitations of KBBF crystal. The unique [B₅PO₁₀F]_∞ layers enhance ABPF’s performance; for example, it has a large SHG response (1.2 × KDP) and a sufficient birefringence (0.088 at 1064 nm) that enables the shortest phase-matching wavelength to reach the DUV region. Meanwhile, the introduction of strong B-O-P covalent bonds decreases the layered growth habit. These findings will enrich the structural chemistry of fluoroborophosphate and contribute to the discovery of more excellent DUV NLO crystals.
