Photoinduced electronic and ionic effects in strontium titanate

Hydrothermal Co-Crystallization of Novel Copper Tungstate-Strontium Titanate Crystal Composite for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Increased Electron–Hole Recombination Time

The development of catalysts continues to have a significant influence on science today since we can utilize them to efficiently destroy some contaminants. A study in this field is justified because there is a dearth of comprehensive literature on the creation of SrTiO3-based photocatalysts. Related to this topic, here we report the facile preparation of a structure-modified SrTiO3 photocatalyst, by incorporating CuWO4. Within the case of the CuWO4-modified samples (0.5–3 wt% nominal CuWO4 content), the photo-oxidation of phenol, as a contaminant, was more than two times higher than the initial SrTiO3. However, the photocatalytic activity does not change linearly with increasing CuWO4 content, and the CWS2.5 (2.5 wt% nominal CuWO4 content and 4.25 wt% measured content) has the highest photo-activity under the applied conditions. The reason for the better activity was the increased recombination time of charge separation on the catalyst surface. Slower recombination can result in more water being oxidized to hydroxyl radicals, leading to the faster decomposition of the phenol.

Effect of CuO Loading on the Photocatalytic Activity of SrTiO3/MWCNTs Nanocomposites for Dye Degradation under Visible Light

In this study, we report on the preparation of copper oxide/strontium titanate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CuO/STO/MWCNTs) nanocomposites and their photocatalytic activity for degradation of dye under visible light. The crystalline structures of the nanocomposites were investigated by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, which explored the successful fabrication of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, and the cubic STO phase was formed in all samples. For the morphological study, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique was used, which had proved the successful preparation of CuO and STO nanoparticles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (DF-STEM-EDX mapping), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis were performed to evidence the elemental composition of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The optical characteristics were explored via UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. These studies clearly indicate the effect of the presence of CuO and MWCNTs on the visible absorption of the CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light irradiation, following first-order kinetics. Among the different x% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, the 5 wt.% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of MB dye. Moreover, the 5% CuO/STO/MWCNTs showed good stability and recyclability after three consecutive photocatalytic cycles. These results verified that the optimized nanocomposites can be used for photocatalytic applications, especially for dye degradation under visible light.

Cold crystallization and photo-induced thermal behavior of alkyl-derivatized diarylethene molecules

The thermal behavior of alkylated diarylethene molecules (2,3-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)-N-alkylmaleimides; DAE-Cn) was investigated. DAE-C1 and DAE-C2 exhibited cold crystallization, which is a heat-storage phenomenon. In addition, DAE-Cn showed photoisomerization; the open-ring isomer O-DAE-Cn was formed by visible light irradiation and transformed to the closed-ring isomer C-DAE-Cn by UV light irradiation. X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy analyses revealed that O-DAE-Cn exhibited cold crystallization and C-DAE-Cn showed poor crystallinity. UV irradiation (365 nm) inhibited cold crystallization, and visible light irradiation (525 nm) triggered cold crystallization, suggesting that heat storage by the cold crystallization of DAE-Cn can be photo-controlled.

The alkylated diarylethene molecules exhibited cold crystallization, and their thermal behavior can be photo-controlled.
