Ionic Gel Electrolytes for Electrochromic Devices

Ionic gels are emerging as a promising solution for improving the functionality of electrochromic devices. They are increasingly drawing attention in the fields of electrochemistry and functional materials due to their potential to address issues associated with traditional liquid electrolytes, such as volatility, toxicity, and leakage. In extreme scenarios and/or the design of flexible devices, ionic gel electrolytes offer unique and invaluable advantages. This perspective delves into the application of ionic gels in electrochromic devices, exploring various methods to enhance their performance. After briefly introducing developments in ionic gels for electrochromic devices, the trends and key points of future development are discussed in detail.

A Recyclable Ionogel with High Mechanical Robustness Based on Covalent Adaptable Networks

Ionogels are an emerging class of soft materials for flexible electronics, with high ionic conductivity, low volatility, and mechanical stretchability. Recyclable ionogels are recently developed to address the sustainability crisis of current electronics, through the introduction of non-covalent bonds. However, this strategy sacrifices mechanical robustness and chemical stability, severely diminishing the potential for practical application. Here, covalent adaptable networks (CANs) are incorporated into ionogels, where dynamic covalent crosslinks endow high strength (11.3 MPa tensile strength), stretchability (2396% elongation at break), elasticity (energy loss coefficient of 0.055 at 100% strain), and durability (5000 cycles of 150% strain). The reversible nature of CANs allows the ionogel to be closed-loop recyclable for up to ten times. Additionally, the ionogel is toughened by physical crosslinks between conducting ions and polymer networks, breaking the common dilemma in enhancing mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. The ionogel demonstrates robust strain sensing performance under harsh mechanical treatments and is applied for reconfigurable multimodal sensing based on its recyclability. This study provides insights into improving the mechanical and electrical properties of ionogels toward functionally reliable and environmentally sustainable bioelectronics.

Straightforward preparation of a tough and stretchable ion gel

Ion gels, polymer networks swollen by ionic liquids, are expected to be applied to wearable devices that are tolerant to repeated stretching. High strength and excellent stretchability was achieved due to the numerous physical cross-links with abundant polymer chain entanglements in addition to a small number of immobile chemical cross-links, even though the ion gel was prepared by a facile methodology.

Boosting Contact Electrification by Amorphous Polyvinyl Alcohol Endowing Improved Contact Adhesion and Electrochemical Capacitance

Ion conductive hydrogels are relevant components in wearable, biocompatible, and biodegradable electronics. Polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) homopolymer is often the favored choice for integration into supercapacitors and energy harvesters as in sustainable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). However, to further improve hydrogel-based TENGs, a deeper understanding of the impact of their composition and structure on devices performance is necessary. Here, it is shown how ionic hydrogels based on an amorphous-PVA (a-PVA) allow to fabricate TENGs that outperform the one based on the homopolymer. When used as tribomaterial, the Li-doped a-PVA allows to achieve a twofold higher pressure sensitivity compared to PVA, and to develop a conformable e-skin. When used as an ionic conductor encased in an elastomeric tribomaterial, 100 mW cm-2 average power is obtained, providing 25% power increase compared to PVA. At the origin of such enhancement is the increased softness, stronger adhesive contact, higher ionic mobility (> 3,5-fold increase), and long-term stability achieved with Li-doped a-PVA. These improvements are attributed to the high density of hydroxyl groups and amorphous structure present in the a-PVA, enabling a strong binding to water molecules. This work discloses novel insights on those parameters allowing to develop easy-processable, stable, and highly conductive hydrogels for integration in conformable, soft, and biocompatible TENGs.

Superstrong Ionogel Enabled by Coacervation-Induced Nanofibril Assembly for Sustainable Moisture Energy Harvesting

Ionogels have grabbed significant interest in various applications, from sensors and actuators to wearable electronics and energy storage devices. However, current ionogels suffer from low strength and poor ionic conductivity, limiting their performance in practical applications. Here, inspired by the mechanical reinforcement of natural biomacromolecules through noncovalent aggregates, a strategy is proposed to construct nanofibril-based ionogels through complex coacervation-induced assembly. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) can bundle together with poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) to form a superstrong nanofibrous network, in which the ionic liquid (IL) can be retained to form ionogels with high liquid inclusion and ionic conductivity. The strength of the CNF-PIL-IL ionogels can be tuned by the IL content over a wide range of up to 78 MPa. The optical transparency, high strength, and hygroscopicity enabled them to be promising candidates in moist-electricity generation and applications such as energy harvesting windows and wearable power generators. In addition, the ionogels are degradable and the ionogel-based generators can be recycled through dehydration. Our strategy suggests perspectives for the fabrication of high-strength and multifunctional ionogels for sustainable applications.

Polymerized and Colloidal Ionic Liquids─Syntheses and Applications

The breadth and importance of polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) are steadily expanding, and this review updates advances and trends in syntheses, properties, and applications over the past five to six years. We begin with an historical overview of the genesis and growth of the PIL field as a subset of materials science. The genesis of ionic liquids (ILs) over nano to meso length-scales exhibiting 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D topologies defines colloidal ionic liquids, CILs, which compose a subclass of PILs and provide a synthetic bridge between IL monomers (ILMs) and micro to macro-scale PIL materials. The second focus of this review addresses design and syntheses of ILMs and their polymerization reactions to yield PILs and PIL-based materials. A burgeoning diversity of ILMs reflects increasing use of nonimidazolium nuclei and an expanding use of step-growth chemistries in synthesizing PIL materials. Radical chain polymerization remains a primary method of making PILs and reflects an increasing use of controlled polymerization methods. Step-growth chemistries used in creating some CILs utilize extensive cross-linking. This cross-linking is enabled by incorporating reactive functionalities in CILs and PILs, and some of these CILs and PILs may be viewed as exotic cross-linking agents. The third part of this update focuses upon some advances in key properties, including molecular weight, thermal properties, rheology, ion transport, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness. Glass transitions, critical solution temperatures, and liquidity are key thermal properties that tie to PIL rheology and viscoelasticity. These properties in turn modulate mechanical properties and ion transport, which are foundational in increasing applications of PILs. Cross-linking in gelation and ionogels and reversible step-growth chemistries are essential for self-healing PILs. Stimuli-responsiveness distinguishes PILs from many other classes of polymers, and it emphasizes the importance of segmentally controlling and tuning solvation in CILs and PILs. The fourth part of this review addresses development of applications, and the diverse scope of such applications supports the increasing importance of PILs in materials science. Adhesion applications are supported by ionogel properties, especially cross-linking and solvation tunable interactions with adjacent phases. Antimicrobial and antifouling applications are consequences of the cationic nature of PILs. Similarly, emulsion and dispersion applications rely on tunable solvation of functional groups and on how such groups interact with continuous phases and substrates. Catalysis is another significant application, and this is an historical tie between ILs and PILs. This component also provides a connection to diverse and porous carbon phases templated by PILs that are catalysts or serve as supports for catalysts. Devices, including sensors and actuators, also rely on solvation tuning and stimuli-responsiveness that include photo and electrochemical stimuli. We conclude our view of applications with 3D printing. The largest components of these applications are energy related and include developments for supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, and solar cells. We conclude with our vision of how PIL development will evolve over the next decade.

Eutectogels as a Semisolid Electrolyte for Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are signal transducers offering high amplification, which makes them particularly advantageous for detecting weak biological signals. While OECTs typically operate with aqueous electrolytes, those employing solid-like gels as the dielectric layer can be excellent candidates for constructing wearable electrophysiology probes. Despite their potential, the impact of the gel electrolyte type and composition on the operation of the OECT and the associated device design considerations for optimal performance with a chosen electrolyte have remained ambiguous. In this work, we investigate the influence of three types of gel electrolytes-hydrogels, eutectogels, and iongels, each with varying compositions on the performance of OECTs. Our findings highlight the superiority of the eutectogel electrolyte, which comprises poly(glycerol 1,3-diglycerolate diacrylate) as the polymer matrix and choline chloride in combination with 1,3-propanediol deep eutectic solvent as the ionic component. This eutectogel electrolyte outperforms hydrogel and iongel counterparts of equivalent dimensions, yielding the most favorable transient and steady-state performance for both p-type depletion and p-type/n-type enhancement mode transistors gated with silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, the eutectogel-integrated enhancement mode OECTs exhibit exceptional operational stability, reflected in the absence of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) variation in the simulated electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings conducted continuously over a period of 5 h, as well as daily measurements spanning 30 days. Eutectogel-based OECTs also exhibit higher ECG signal amplitudes and SNR than their counterparts, utilizing the commercially available hydrogel, which is the most common electrolyte for cutaneous electrodes. These findings underscore the potential of eutectogels as a semisolid electrolyte for OECTs, particularly in applications demanding robust and prolonged physiological signal monitoring.

Ultra-Tough and Highly Stretchable Dual-Crosslinked Eutectogel Based on Coordinated and Non-Coordinated Two Types Deep Eutectic Solvent Mixture

Eutectogels are gaining attention in flexible device applications for their superior ionic conductivity, stability, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, most existing eutectogels suffer from low strength and toughness. Herein, ultra-tough and highly stretchable polyacrylamide (PAM) eutectogels featuring a dual-crosslinked network comprising chemical cross-linking and physical cross-linking facilitated by metal coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds are developed. This is achieved through a controlled strategy involving polymerization of acrylamide in a coordinated metal salt-type deep eutectic solvent (DES) combined with a non-coordinated choline chloride (ChCl)-type DES mixture. By varying the molar ratio of these two types of DES, exceptional and adjustable mechanical properties of the resulting eutectogel are achieved, including a high tensile strength ranging from 2.9 to 8.2 MPa and elongation at break ranging from 1725 to 747%, at a 70 wt% DES content. Furthermore, the reversible non-covalent crosslinking in these eutectogels enables self-recovery and self-healing capabilities of eutectogels. The prepared eutectogels also exhibit outstanding ionic conductivity (3.56 mS cm-1 ), making them well-suited for use as strain sensors in human motion detection. The toughening strategy is universally effective for creating tough eutectogels using coordinated metal salt-type DES with various metal ions, as well as a diverse range of coordinatable polymers.

Ionogels for flexible conductive substrates and their application in biosensing

Ionogels are highly conductive gels made from ionic liquids dispersed in a matrix made of organic or inorganic materials. Ionogels are known for high ionic conductivity, flexibility, high thermal and electrochemical stability. These characteristics make them suitable for sensing and biosensing applications. This review discusses about the two main constituents, ionic liquids and matrix, used to make ionogels and effect of these materials on the characteristics of ionogels. Here, the material properties like mechanical, electrochemical and stability are discussed for both polymer matrix and ionic liquid. We have briefly described about the fabrication methods like 3D printing, sol-gel, blade coating, spin coating, aerosol jet printing etc., used to make films or coating of these ionogels. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are also briefly summarized. Finally, the last section provides a few examples of application of flexible ionogels in areas like wearables, human-machine interface, electronic skin and detection of biological molecules.

Bioadhesive and electroactive hydrogels for flexible bioelectronics and supercapacitors enabled by a redox-active core-shell PEDOT@PZIF-71 system

Stretchable and conductive hydrogels are rapidly emerging as new generation candidates for wearable devices. However, the poor electroactivity and bioadhesiveness of traditional conductive hydrogels has limited their applications. Herein, a mussel-inspired strategy is proposed to prepare a specific core-shell redox-active system, consisting of a polydopamine (PDA) modified zeolitic imidazolate framework 71 (ZIF-71) core, and a poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiopene (PEDOT) shell. Owing to the abundant catechol groups, PEDOT can be assembled on the surface of ZIF-71 to create a redox-active system. The core-shell nanoparticles could act as a redox-active nanofiller to develop a conductive polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel with energy-storage properties. The core-shell PEDOT@PZIF-71 system provides a mussel-inspired environment in the hydrogel matrix and endows the hydrogel with stretchability and adhesiveness. The hydrogel can be applied as a functional electrode for both bioelectronics and supercapacitors. Moreover, this hydrogel exhibits favorable biocompatibility and can be implanted in vivo for biosignal measurement without causing inflammation. This redox-active core-shell PEDOT@PZIF-71 system provides a promising strategy for the design of hydrogel-based wearable electronic devices.

Water-soluble conjugated polymers for bioelectronic systems

Bioelectronics is an interdisciplinary field of research that aims to establish a synergy between electronics and biology. Contributing to a deeper understanding of bioelectronic processes and the built bioelectronic systems, a variety of new phenomena, mechanisms and concepts have been derived in the field of biology, medicine, energy, artificial intelligence science, etc. Organic semiconductors can promote the applications of bioelectronics in improving original performance and creating new features for organisms due to their excellent photoelectric and electrical properties. Recently, water-soluble conjugated polymers (WSCPs) have been employed as a class of ideal interface materials to regulate bioelectronic processes between biological systems and electronic systems, relying on their satisfying ionic conductivity, water-solubility, good biocompatibility and the additional mechanical and electrical properties. In this review, we summarize the prominent contributions of WSCPs in the aspect of the regulation of bioelectronic processes and highlight the latest advances in WSCPs for bioelectronic applications, involving biosynthetic systems, photosynthetic systems, biophotovoltaic systems, and bioelectronic devices. The challenges and outlooks of WSCPs in designing high-performance bioelectronic systems are also discussed.

Ionogels: recent advances in design, material properties and emerging biomedical applications

Ionic liquid (IL)-based gels (ionogels) have received considerable attention due to their unique advantages in ionic conductivity and their biphasic liquid-solid phase property. In ionogels, the negligibly volatile ionic liquid is retained in the interconnected 3D pore structure. On the basis of these physical features as well as the chemical properties of well-chosen ILs, there is emerging interest in the anti-bacterial and biocompatibility aspects. In this review, the recent achievements of ionogels for biomedical applications are summarized and discussed. Following a brief introduction of the various types of ILs and their key physicochemical and biological properties, the design strategies and fabrication methods of ionogels are presented by means of different confining networks. These sophisticated ionogels with diverse functions, aimed at biomedical applications, are further classified into several active domains, including wearable strain sensors, therapeutic delivery systems, wound healing and biochemical detections. Finally, the challenges and possible strategies for the design of future ionogels by integrating materials science with a biological interface are proposed.

Polyphenol Iongel Patches with Antimicrobial, Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

There is an actual need for developing materials for wound healing applications with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or antibacterial properties in order to improve the healing performance. In this work, we report the preparation and characterization of soft and bioactive iongel materials for patches, based on polymeric poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and four ionic liquids containing the cholinium cation and different phenolic acid anions, namely cholinium salicylate ([Ch][Sal]), cholinium gallate ([Ch][Ga]), cholinium vanillate ([Ch][Van]), and cholinium caffeate ([Ch][Caff]). Within the iongels, the phenolic motif in the ionic liquids plays a dual role, acting as a PVA crosslinker and a bioactive compound. The obtained iongels are flexible, elastic, ionic conducting, and thermoreversible materials. Moreover, the iongels demonstrated high biocompatibility, non-hemolytic activity, and non-agglutination in mice blood, which are key-sought material specifications in wound healing applications. All the iongels have shown antibacterial properties, being PVA-[Ch][Sal], the one with higher inhibition halo for Escherichia Coli. The iongels also revealed high values of antioxidant activity due to the presence of the polyphenol, with the PVA-[Ch][Van] iongel having the highest activity. Finally, the iongels show a decrease in NO production in LPS-stimulated macrophages, with the PVA-[Ch][Sal] iongel displaying the best anti-inflammatory activity (>63% at 200 µg/mL).

Semi-IPN ionogel based on poly (ionic liquids)/xanthan gum for highly sensitive pressure sensor

In this paper, a novel ionogel with semi-interpenetrating poly (ionic liquids)/xanthan gum (PIL/XG) polymer network (semi-IPN) was prepared by using a simple one-pot method. The structure and the pressure sensing performance have been systematically investigated. It was found that introducing a low content (0.3-3.1 wt%) of XG significantly promoted the mechanical performance of ionogels with little effect on the ionic conductivity. The optimized PIL/XG containing 2.2 wt% XG exhibited high compression strength (761.0 kPa) and ionic conductivity (0.63 S/m at 25 °C). Such ionogels showed a liner response (0-100 kPa) and high sensitivity value of 6.86 kPa^-1 in a capacitive mode. Meanwhile, as a resistive sensor, PIL/XG exhibited a wide response range to dynamic pressure ranges with stable repeatability. Furthermore, this ionogel exhibited excellent bactericidal properties against both gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria. This research provides a potential approach for developing ionogels based on semi-IPN with pressure-sensitive and anti-bacterial properties.

Ionogel-Based Membranes for Safe Lithium/Sodium Batteries

Alkali (lithium, sodium)-based second batteries are considered one of the brightest candidates for energy-storage applications in order to utilize the random and intermittent renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality. Conventional lithium/sodium batteries containing liquid organic electrolytes are vulnerable to electrolytes leakage and even combustion, which hinders their large-scale and reliable application. All-solid-state electrolytes which are considered to have better safety have been developed in recent years. However, most of them suffer from low ionic conductivity and large interfacial resistance with the electrode. Ionogel-electrolyte membranes composed of ionic liquids and solid matrices, have attracted much attention because of their nonvolatility, nonflammability, and superior chemical and electrochemical properties. This review focuses on the most recent advances of ionogel electrolytes that sprang up with the emerging demand and progress of safe lithium/sodium batteries. The ionogel-electrolyte membranes are discussed based on the framework components and preparation methods. Their structure and properties, including ionic conductivity, mechanical strength, electrochemical stabilities, and so on, are demonstrated in combination with their applications. The current challenges and insights on the future development of ionogel electrolytes for advanced safe lithium/sodium batteries are also proposed.

Photodimerization induced hierarchical and asymmetric iontronic micropatterns

Micropatterning various ion-based modality materials offers compelling advantages for functionality enhancement in iontronic pressure sensing, piezoionic mechanoreception, and skin-interfaced electrode adhesion. However, most existing patterning techniques for iontronic materials suffer from low flexibility and limited modulation capability. Herein, we propose a facile and robust method to fabricate hierarchical and asymmetrical iontronic micropatterns (denoted as HAIMs) through programmed regulation of the internal stress distribution and the local ionic migration among an iontronic host. The resultant HAIMs with arbitrarily regulated morphologies and region-dependent ionic electrical performance can be readily made via localized photodimerization of an anthracene-functionalized ionic liquid copolymer (denoted as An-PIL) and subsequent vapor oxidative polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT). Based on the piezoionic effect within the resultant distinct doped PEDOT, HAIMs can serve as a scalable iontronic potential generator. Successful syntheses of these fascinating micropatterns may accelerate the development of patterned iontronic materials in a flexible, programmable, and functionally adaptive form.

Flexible Sustained Ionogels with Ionic Hyperbranched Polymers for Enhanced Ion-Conduction and Energy Storage

Flexible and mechanically robust gel-like electrolytes offer enhanced energy storage capabilities, versatility, and safety in batteries and supercapacitors. However, the trade-off between ion conduction and mechanical robustness remains a challenge for these materials. Here, we suggest that the introduction of ionic hyperbranched polymers in structured sustained ionogels will lead to both enhanced ion conduction and mechanical performance because of the hyperbranched polymers' ionically conductive groups and the complementary interfacial interactions with ionic liquids. More specifically, we investigate the effect of hyperbranched polymers with carboxylate terminal groups and imidazolium counterions with various ionic group densities on the properties of ionogels composed of coassembled cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as sustainable open pore frame for ionic liquid immersion. The addition of hyperbranched polymers leads to the formation of highly interconnected openly porous, lightweight, and shape-persistent materials by harnessing hydrogen bonding between the polymers and the CNFs/CNCs "frame". Notably, these materials possess a 2-fold improvement in ionic conductivity combined with many-fold increase in Young's modulus, tensile strength, and toughness, making them comparable to common reinforced nanocomposite materials. Furthermore, the corresponding thin-film gel supercapacitors possess enhanced electrochemical cycling stability upon repeated bending with an 85% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles, promising new insight in the development of simultaneously conductive and flexible gel electrolytes with sustained performance.

Thioether-based ROS responsive polymers for biomedical applications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a key role in several biological functions of living organisms such as regulation of cell signalling, production of some hormones, modulation of protein function or mediation of inflammation. In this regard, ROS responsive polymers are ideal candidates for the development of stimuli-responsive biomaterials for target therapies. Among different ROS-responsive polymers, those containing thioether groups are widely investigated in the biomedical field due to their hydrophobic to hydrophilic phase transition under oxidative conditions. This feature makes them able to self-assemble in aqueous solutions forming micellar-type nanoparticles or hydrogels to be mainly used as drug carriers for local therapies in damaged body areas characterized by high ROS production. This review article collects the main findings about the synthesis of thioether-based ROS responsive polymers and polypeptides, their self-assembly properties and ROS responsive behaviour for use as injectable nanoparticles or hydrogels. Afterward, the foremost applications of the thioether-based ROS responsive nanoparticles and hydrogels in the biomedical field, where cancer therapies are a key objective, will be discussed.

Poly(ethylene glycol) Diacrylate Iongel Membranes Reinforced with Nanoclays for CO2 Separation

Despite the fact that iongels are very attractive materials for gas separation membranes, they often show mechanical stability issues mainly due to the high ionic liquid (IL) content (≥60 wt%) needed to achieve high gas separation performances. This work investigates a strategy to improve the mechanical properties of iongel membranes, which consists in the incorporation of montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay, from 0.2 to 7.5 wt%, into a cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) network containing 60 wt% of the IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2mim][TFSI]). The iongels were prepared by a simple one-pot method using ultraviolet (UV) initiated polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and characterized by several techniques to assess their physico-chemical properties. The thermal stability of the iongels was influenced by the addition of higher MMT contents (>5 wt%). It was possible to improve both puncture strength and elongation at break with MMT contents up to 1 wt%. Furthermore, the highest ideal gas selectivities were achieved for iongels containing 0.5 wt% MMT, while the highest CO2 permeability was observed at 7.5 wt% MMT content, due to an increase in diffusivity. Remarkably, this strategy allowed for the preparation and gas permeation of self-standing iongel containing 80 wt% IL, which had not been possible up until now.
