Interface engineering of heterogeneous transition metal chalcogenides for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Two-dimensional materials as catalysts, interfaces, and electrodes for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been significantly investigated as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over the past few decades due to their excellent electrocatalytic properties and their structural uniqueness including the atomically thin structure and abundant active sites. Recently, 2D materials with various electronic properties have not only been used as active catalytic materials, but also employed in other components of the HER electrodes including a conductive electrode layer and an interfacial layer to maximize the HER efficiency or utilized as templates for catalytic nanostructure growth. This review provides the recent progress and future perspectives of 2D materials as key components in electrocatalytic systems with an emphasis on the HER applications. We categorized the use of 2D materials into three types: a catalytic layer, an electrode for catalyst support, and an interlayer for enhancing charge transfer between the catalytic layer and the electrode. We first introduce various scalable synthesis methods of electrocatalytic-grade 2D materials, and we discuss the role of 2D materials as HER catalysts, an interface for efficient charge transfer, and an electrode and/or a growth template of nanostructured noble metals.

Molybdenum Phosphide Quantum Dots Encapsulated by P/N-Doped Carbon for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Acid and Alkaline Electrolytes

A facile and eco-friendly strategy is presented for synthesizing novel nanocomposites, with MoP quantum dots (QDs) as cores and graphitic carbon as shells, these nanoparticles are dispersed in a nitrogen and phosphorus-doped porous carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) substrates (MoP@NPC/CNT). The synthesis involves self-assembling reactions to form single-source precursors (SSPs), followed by pyrolysis at 900 °C in an inert atmosphere to obtain MoP@NPC/CNT-900. The presence of carbon layers on the MoP QDs effectively prevents particle aggregation, enhancing the utilization of active MoP species. The optimized sample, MoP@NPC/CNT-900, exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It demonstrates a low overpotential of 155 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 76 mV dec-1 , and sustained performance over 20 hours in 0.5 M H2 SO4 . Furthermore, the catalyst shows excellent activity in 1 M KOH, with a relatively low overpotential of 131 mV and long-term durability under constant current input. The exceptional HER activity can be attributed to several factors: the superior performance of MoP QDs, the large surface area and good conductivity of the carbon substrates, and the synergistic effect between MoP and carbon species.

Recent advances in solution assisted synthesis of transition metal chalcogenides for photo-electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Hydrogen evolution from water splitting is considered to be an important renewable clean energy source and alternative to fossil fuels for future energy sustainability. Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic water splitting is considered to be an effective method for the sustainable production of clean energy, H₂. This perspective especially emphasizes research advances in the solution-assisted synthesis of transition metal chalcogenides for both photo and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution applications. Transition metal chalcogenides (CdS, MoS₂, WS₂, TiS₂, TaS₂, ReS₂, MoSe₂, and WSe₂) have received intensified research interest over the past two decades on account of their unique properties and great potential across a wide range of applications. The photocatalytic activity of transition metal chalcogenides can further be improved by elemental doping, heterojunction formation with noble metals (Au, Pt, etc.), non-chalcogenides (MoS₂, In₂S₃, NiS_1-X), morphological tuning, through various solution-assisted synthesis processes, including liquid-phase exfoliation, heat-up, hot-injection methods, hydrothermal/solvothermal routes and template-mediated synthesis processes. In this review we will discuss recent developments in transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs), the role of TMCs for hydrogen production and various strategies for surface functionalization to increase their activity, different synthesis methods, and prospects of TMCs for hydrogen evolution. We have included a brief discussion on the effect of surface hydrogen binding energy and Gibbs free energy change for HER in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
