A magnetically responsive photonic crystal of graphene oxide nanosheets

Magnetically responsive photonic crystals of colloidal nanosheets hold great promise for various applications. Here, we systematically investigated the magnetically responsive behavior of a photonic crystal consisting of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and water. After applying a 12 T magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the observation direction, the photonic crystal exhibited a more vivid structural color and no structural color, respectively, based on the magnetic orientation of GO nanosheets. The reflection wavelength can be modulated by varying the GO concentration, and the peak intensity can be basically enhanced by increasing both the time and strength of the magnetic application. To improve color quality, we developed a novel approach of alternately applying a magnetic field to two orthogonal directions, instead of using a rotating magnetic field. Finally, we achieved color switching by changing the direction of applied magnetic fields.

Magnetic field-responsive graphene oxide photonic liquids

Modifying the environment around particles (e.g., introducing a secondary phase or external field) can affect the way they interact and assemble, thereby giving control over the physical properties of a dynamic system. Here, graphene oxide (GO) photonic liquids that respond to a magnetic field are demonstrated for the first time. Magnetic nanoparticles are used to provide a continuous magnetizable liquid environment around the GO liquid crystalline domains. In response to a magnetic field, the alignment of magnetic nanoparticles, coupled with the diamagnetic property of GO nanosheets, drives the reorientation and alignment of the nanosheets, enabling switchable photonic properties using a permanent magnet. This phenomenon is anticipated to be extendable to other relevant photonic systems of shape-anisotropic nanoparticles and may open up opportunities for developing GO-based optical materials and devices.

Countercation Engineering of Graphene-Oxide Nanosheets for Imparting a Thermoresponsive Ability

Graphene-oxide (GO) nanosheets, which are oxidized derivatives of graphene, are regarded as promising building blocks for functional soft materials. Especially, thermoresponsive GO nanosheets have been widely employed to develop smart membranes/surfaces, hydrogel actuators, recyclable systems, and biomedical applications. However, current synthetic strategies to generate such thermoresponsive GO nanosheets have exclusively relied on the covalent or non-covalent modification of their surfaces with thermoresponsive polymers, such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). To impart a thermoresponsive ability to GO nanosheets themselves, we focused on the countercations of the carboxy and acidic hydroxy groups on the GO nanosheets. In this study, we established a general and reliable method to synthesize GO nanosheets with target countercations and systematically investigated their effects on thermoresponsive behaviors of GO nanosheets. As a result, we discovered that GO nanosheets with Bu4N+ countercations became thermoresponsive in water without the use of any thermoresponsive polymers, inducing a reversible sol-gel transition via their self-assembly and disassembly processes. Owing to the sol-gel transition capability, the resultant dispersion can be used as a direct writing ink for constructing a three-dimensionally designable gel architecture of the GO nanosheets. Our concept of "countercation engineering" can become a new strategy for imparting a stimuli-responsive ability to various charged nanomaterials for the development of next-generation smart materials.

Chiral Liquid Crystalline Properties of Cellulose Nanocrystals: Fundamentals and Applications

By using an independent self-assembly process that is occasionally controlled by evaporation, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) may create films (pure or in conjunction with other materials) that have iridescent structural colors. The self-forming chiral nematic structures and environmental safety of a new class of photonic liquid crystals (LCs), referred to as CNCs and CNC-embedded materials, make them simple to make and treat. The structure of the matrix interacts with light to give structural coloring, as opposed to other dye pigments, which interact with light by adsorption and reflection. Understanding how CNC self-assembly constructs structures is vital in several fields, including physics, science, and engineering. To constructure this review, the colloidal characteristics of CNC particles and their behavior during the formation of liquid crystals and gelling were studied. Then, some of the recognized applications for these naturally occurring nanoparticles were summarized. Different factors were considered, including the CNC aspect ratio, surface chemistry, concentration, the amount of time needed to produce an anisotropic phase, and the addition of additional substances to the suspension medium. The effects of alignment and the drying process conditions on structural changes are also covered. The focus of this study however is on the optical properties of the films as well as the impact of the aforementioned factors on the final transparency, iridescent colors, and versus the overall response of these bioinspired photonic materials. Control of the examined factors was found to be necessary to produce reliable materials for optoelectronics, intelligent inks and papers, transparent flexible support for electronics, and decorative coatings and films.
