Nanozyme-based sensors for detection of food biomarkers: a review

Nanozymes have piqued the curiosity of scientists in recent years because of their ability to demonstrate enzyme-like activity combined with advantages such as high stability, inexpensive availability, robust activity, and tunable properties. These attributes have allowed the successful application of nanozymes in sensing to detect various chemical and biological target analytes, overcoming the shortcomings of conventional detection techniques. In this review, we discuss recent developments of nanozyme-based sensors to detect biomarkers associated with food quality and safety. First, we present a brief introduction to this topic, followed by discussing the different types of sensors used in food biomarker detection. We then highlight recent studies on nanozyme-based sensors to detect food markers such as toxins, pathogens, antibiotics, growth hormones, metal ions, additives, small molecules, and drug residues. In the subsequent section, we discuss the challenges and possible solutions towards the development of nanozyme-based sensors for application in the food industry. Finally, we conclude the review by discussing future perspectives of this field towards successful detection and monitoring of food analytes.

Graphene nanosheet-sandwiched platinum nanoparticles deposited on a graphite pencil electrode as an ultrasensitive sensor for dopamine

An ultra-sensitive sensor of dopamine is introduced. The sensor is constructed by encapsulating platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) between reduced graphene oxide (GR) nanosheets. The sandwiched PtNPs between GR layers acted as a spacer to prevent aggregation and provided a fine connection between the GR nanosheets to provide fast charge transfer. This specific orientation of the GR nanosheets and PtNPs on the graphite pencil electrode (GPE) substantially improved the electrocatalytic activity of the sensor. The synthesized graphene oxide and the fabricated sensor were comprehensively characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The value of the charge transfer coefficient (α), apparent heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k s), and electroactive surface area for dopamine were found to be about 0.57, 8.99 s-1, and 0.81 cm2, respectively. The developed sensor is highly sensitive towards dopamine, and the detection limit is 9.0 nM. The sensor response is linear for dopamine concentration from 0.06 to 20 μM (R 2 = 0.9991). The behavior of the sensor for dopamine in the presence of a high concentration of l(+) Ascorbic acid and other potential interferents was satisfactory. High recovery percentage between 90% and 105% in the human urine sample, good reproducibility, and facile fabrication of the electrode make it a good candidate for dopamine sensing.

Toward the Development of Disposable Electrodes Based on Holmium Orthovanadate/f-Boron Nitride: Impacts and Electrochemical Performances of Emerging Inorganic Contaminants

Rare-earth metal orthovanadates have great technological relevance in the family of rare-earth compounds owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties. A significant number of studies have been carried out on this class of compounds to exploit their electrochemical properties in virtue of variable oxidation states. But holmium vanadate (HoV) and its morphology selective synthesis have not been considered, which can have potential applications similar to the rest of the family. In this work, we propose the synthesis of superior architectures of HoV with a functionalized boron nitride (f-BN) nanocomposite. The synergistic effect between HoV and f-BN can have a positive effect on the physical characteristics of the nanocomposite, which can be explored for its electrochemical capacity. Here, HoV incorporated with f-BN is explored for the electrochemical detection of Hg²⁺ ions, which is known for its toxicity-induced environmental health hazards. The structural and compositional revelation reveals higher conductivity and faster electron transfer in the composite, which facilitates a wide working range (0.02-53.8 and 64.73-295.4 μM), low limit of detection (5 nM), higher sensitivity (66.6 μA μM^-1 cm^-2), good selectivity over 10-fold higher concentration of other interfering compounds compared to Hg²⁺ ion concentration, and good cycles stability (30 segments) toward Hg²⁺ ion detection. This also envisages the morphology selective synthesis and utilization of other rare-earth metals, whose electrochemical capacities are unexplored.
