Phytochemical Profiling and Compound Isolation of Cissus rhombifolia Vahl. Leaves Aqueous Methanolic Extract with the Evaluation of Its Anti-Inflammatory Effect Using Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation in RAW 264.7 Cells

The inflammatory disorders represent a serious health issue. Certain Cissus species possess anti-inflammatory effect. Cissus rhombifolia Vahl. leaves' anti-inflammatory activities and phytoconstituents are poorly characterized. In this study, 38 constituents were tentatively characterized in Cissus rhombifolia Vahl. leaves' aqueous methanolic extract (CRLE) using high-performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1 H-NMR). Myricetin, β-amyrin, and alliospiroside A, were isolated from CRLE using column chromatography. The anti-inflammatory effect of CRLE and its isolated compounds were studied in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT assay) was used to assess how CRLE and its isolated compounds affected cell viability. Further, its effects on the production of intracellular NO, and inflammatory cytokines cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were assessed by the Griess test, and cytokine enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively. CRLE and its isolated compounds, myricetin, β-amyrin, and alliospiroside A decreased the NO production. Western blotting was performed to assess the protein expression levels of the inflammatory cytokines inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Alliospiroside A downregulated IL-6, TNF-α, and COX-2 and inhibited the expression of iNOS. CRLE and its compounds represent effective alternative candidate to treat inflammatory diseases.

Automated grindstone chemistry: a simple and facile way for PEG-assisted stoichiometry-controlled halogenation of phenols and anilines using N-halosuccinimides

A simple electrical mortar–pestle was used for the development of a green and facile mechanochemical route for the catalyst-free halogenation of phenols and anilines via liquid-assisted grinding using PEG-400 as the grinding auxiliary. A series of mono-, di-, and tri-halogenated phenols and anilines was synthesized in good to excellent yields within 10–15 min in a chemoselective manner by controlling the stoichiometry of N-halosuccinimides (NXS, X = Br, I, and Cl). It was observed that PEG-400 plays a key role in controlling the reactivity of the substrates and to afford better regioselectivity. Almost exclusive para-selectivity was observed for the aromatic substrates with free o- and p-positions for mono- and dihalogenations. As known, the decarboxylation (or desulfonation) was observed in the case of salicylic acids and anthranilic acids (or sulfanilic acids) leading to 2,4,6-trihalogenated products when 3 equiv of NXS was used. Simple instrumentation, metal-free approach, cost-effectiveness, atom economy, short reaction time, and mild reaction conditions are a few noticeable merits of this environmentally sustainable mechanochemical protocol.

Interfacial Electronic Effects in Co@N-Doped Carbon Shells Heterojunction Catalyst for Semi-Hydrogenation of Phenylacetylene

Metal-supported catalyst with high activity and relatively simple preparation method is given priority to industrial production. In this work, this study reported an easily accessible synthesis strategy to prepare Mott-Schottky-type N-doped carbon encapsulated metallic Co (Co@N_p+gC) catalyst by high-temperature pyrolysis method in which carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) and dopamine were used as support and nitrogen source. The prepared Co@N_p+gC presented a Mott-Schottky effect; that is, a strong electronic interaction of metallic Co and N-doped carbon shell was constructed to lead to the generation of Mott-Schottky contact. The metallic Co, due to high work function as compared to that of N-doped carbon, transferred electrons to the N-doped outer shell, forming a new contact interface. In this interface area, the positive and negative charges were redistributed, and the catalytic hydrogenation mainly occurred in the area of active charges. The Co@N_p+gC catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene, and the selectivity of styrene reached 82.4%, much higher than those of reference catalysts. The reason for the promoted semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene was attributed to the electron transfer of metallic Co, as it was caused by N doping on carbon.
