Regulating the Morphology Modification To Prepare the High Charge Separation Efficiency and Visible Light Responsive Dual-Type-II B-CN/H-TiO2/BS-CN Heterojunction for Wastewater Treatment

For the conventional type-II heterojunction photocatalyst, their photocatalytic activity is affected by the limited separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, exquisitely designed heterojunction photocatalysts are highly prospective materials for inducing charge transfer efficiently. Typically, enhancing the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs in photocatalysts has been a formidable challenge. Here, the hollow mesoporous TiO2 (H-TiO2), the bulk g-C3N4 (B-CN), and g-C3N4 with bamboo shape (BS-CN) are prepared by simple processes. Among them, it is surprising to find that the band structure of g-C3N4 can be regulated and controlled by adjusting its structure. The B-CN/H-TiO2/BS-CN (CNTOCN) dual-type-II heterojunction photocatalyst and B-CN/H-TiO2 (CNTO) type-II heterojunction photocatalyst are designed to improve the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs. The superiority of CNTOCN dual-type-II heterojunction photocatalyst is demonstrated by the photocatalysis experiment, the band structure analysis, and the photoelectric characterization. The results show that CNTOCN (0.8428 h-1) has much higher photocatalytic activity than H-TiO2 (0.0812 h-1), B-CN (0.3569 h-1), and CNTO (0.5934 h-1). The improvement of photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the establishment of the dual-type-II heterojunction charge transfer mechanism. This work presents an approach to designing efficient dual-type-II heterojunction photocatalysts for the sustainable conversion of solar energy to photodegrade dyes in dyeing wastewater.

A Schottky/Z-Scheme Hybrid for Augmented Photocatalytic H2 and H2O2 Production

The prodigious employment of fossil fuels to conquer the global energy demand is becoming a dreadful threat to the human society. This predicament is appealing for a potent photocatalyst that can generate alternate energy sources via solar to chemical energy conversion. With this interest, we have fabricated a ternary heterostructure of Ti3C2 nanosheet modified g-C3N4/Bi2O3 (MCNRBO) Z-scheme photocatalyst through self-assembly process. The morphological analysis clearly evidenced the close interfacial interaction between g-C3N4 nanorod, Bi2O3 and Ti3C2 nanosheets. The oxygen vacancy created on Bi2O3 surface, as suggested by XPS and EPR analysis, supported the Z-scheme heterojunction formation between g-C3N4 nanorod and Bi2O3 nanosheets. The collaborative effect of Z-scheme and Schottky junction significantly reduced charge transfer resistance promoting separation efficiency of excitons as indicated from PL and EIS analysis. The potential of MCNRBO towards photocatalytic application was investigated by H2O2 and H2 evolution reaction. A superior photocatalytic H2O2 and H2 production rate for MCNRBO is observed, which are respectively around 5 and 18 folds higher as compared to pristine CNR nanorod. The present work encourages for the development of a noble, eco-benign and immensely efficient dual heterojunction based photocatalyst, which can acts as saviour of human society from energy crisis.

Augmented photocatalysis induced by 1T-MoS2 bridged 2D/2D MgIn2S4@1T/2H-MoS2 Z-scheme heterojunction: mechanistic insights into H2O2 and H2 evolution

In the realm of composite photocatalysts, the fusion of the co-catalyst effect with interfacial engineering is recognized as a potent strategy for facilitating the segregation and migration of photo-induced charge carriers. Herein, an innovative mediator-based Z-scheme hybrid, i.e. MIS@1T/2H-MoS2, has been well designed by pairing MIS with 1T/2H-MoS2via a facile hydrothermal strategy as a competent photocatalyst for H2O2 and H2 generation. The co-catalyst, i.e. metallic 1T-phase bridging between semiconducting 2H-MoS2 and MIS, serves as a solid state electron mediator in the heterostructure. Morphological findings revealed the growth of 1T/2H-MoS2 nanoflowers over MIS microflowers, verifying the close interaction between MIS and 1T/2H-MoS2. By virtue of accelerated e-/h+ pair separation and migration efficiency along with a proliferated density of active sites, the MMoS2-30 photocatalyst yields an optimum H2O2 of 35 μmol h-1 and H2 of 370 μmol h-1 (ACE of 5.9%), which is 3 and 2.7 fold higher than pristine MIS. This obvious enhancement can be attributed to photoluminescence and electrochemical aspects that substantiate the diminished charge transfer resistance along with improved charge carrier separation, representing a good example of a noble metal-free photocatalyst. The proposed Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is aided by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), XPS, radical trapping experiments, and EPR analysis. Overall, this endeavour provides advanced insights into the architecture of noble metal-free Z-scheme heterostructures, offering promising prospects in photocatalytic applications.

Hydrogen Evolution Activity of Nitrogen-Rich g-C3-xN4+x Synthesized by Solid-Gas Interface Method

Synthesis of a metal-free carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst in the form of nitrogen-rich g-C3-xN4+x derivatives is desirable for efficient solar to hydrogen conversion and remains a challenging task to achieve. Herein we report the development of homogeneous sheets of nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride samples from melamine by a solid-gas interface approach. Using this method, pure g-C3N4 (CN), g-C3-xN4+x under ammonia flow (CN-NH3) and g-C3-xN4+x under nitrogen flow (CN-N2) are prepared. The g-C3-xN4+x (CN-NH3) sample shows better surface conductivity, wide optical absorbance in the visible region, reduced recombination and high electron donor density, and higher performance toward photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution (HER). The g-C3-xN4+x (CN-NH3) generates a photocurrent of 2.06 μA cm-2, which is 2.5 times higher than that of the pure g-C3N4 (CN) sample (0.85 μA cm-2). It also shows higher photocatalytic water splitting ability compared to the CN and CN-N2 samples, generating 634 μmol g-1 hydrogen without cocatalyst and 1163 μmol g-1 of hydrogen with Pt cocatalyst. Density functional calculations suggest that the progressive band gap reduction with the increase in the N-dopant percentage can be attributed to the gradual increase in the partial π-occupations, which can lead to a significant stabilization of the conduction band minima. The theoretical modeling, however, indicates a saturation in the band gap effect after 75% of N-dopant. The onset potential of g-C3-xN4+x for HER appears at η = 0.43 V in dark and η = 0.34 V vs Ag/AgCl under solar light illumination of 1 sun.

Nanoarchitecture of a Ti3C2@TiO2 Hybrid for Photocatalytic Antibiotic Degradation and Hydrogen Evolution: Stability, Kinetics, and Mechanistic Insights

Designing of a visible-light-driven semiconductor-based heterojunction with suitable band alignment and well-defined interfacial contact is considered to be an effective strategy for the transformation of solar-to-chemical energy and environmental remediation. In this context, MXenes have received tremendous attention in the research community due to their merits of abundant derivatives, elemental composition, excellent metallic conductivity, and surface termination groups. Meanwhile, a facile synthetic strategy for MXene-derived TiO₂ nanocomposites with stable framework and higher photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation still remains a challenge for researchers. Herein, we report a novel synthetic strategy of preparing a two-dimensional Ti₃C₂@TiO₂ nanohybrid by a facile reflux method under acidic conditions. In this oxidation reaction, protonation of the hydroxyl terminal group of MXene creates Ti more electrophilic and susceptible to an oxidative nucleophilic addition reaction with the presence of both water and oxygen. The physicochemical properties of the nanohybrid Ti₃C₂@TiO₂ were verified by varieties of characterization techniques. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis specifically elucidated the intimate interfacial interaction between Ti₃C₂ and TiO₂. The optimized Ti₃C₂@TiO₂-48 h photocatalyst exhibited the highest tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH, 90% in 90 min) degradation efficiency in comparison to pristine TiO₂ with a rate constant (k) of 0.02463 min^-1. The major contribution of ^•O₂^- and ^•OH radicals throughout photocatalytic TCH degradation was confirmed by the trapping experiment. Moreover, the photocatalyst showed the highest hydrogen generation rate of 140.8 μmol h^-1 along with an apparent conversion efficiency of 2.2%. The excellent photocatalytic activity of Ti₃C₂@TiO₂ originated from the superior electrical conductivity of cocatalyst Ti₃C₂, which facilitated spatial photogenerated e^-/h⁺ separation and transfer at the Ti₃C₂ MXene@TiO₂ interface. Overall, this research work will describe a promising protocol of designing MXene-derived photocatalysts toward efficient environmental remediation and wastewater treatment applications.

Bismuth Vanadate Decked Polyaniline Polymeric Nanocomposites: The Robust Photocatalytic Destruction of Microbial and Chemical Toxicants

Functional materials have long been studied for a variety of environmental applications, resource rescue, and many other conceivable applications. The present study reports on the synthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) integrated polyaniline (PANI) using the hydrothermal method. The topology of BiVO₄ decked PANI catalysts was investigated by SEM and TEM. XRD, EDX, FT-IR, and antibacterial testing were used to examine the physicochemical and antibacterial properties of the samples, respectively. Microscopic images revealed that BiVO₄@PANI are comprised of BiVO₄ hollow cages made up of nanobeads that are uniformly dispersed across PANI tubes. The PL results confirm that the composite has the lowest electron-hole recombination compared to others samples. BiVO₄@PANI composite photocatalysts demonstrated the maximum degradation efficiency compared to pure BiVO₄ and PANI for rhodamine B dye. The probable antimicrobial and photocatalytic mechanisms of the BiVO₄@PANI photocatalyst were proposed. The enhanced antibacterial and photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the high surface area and combined impact of PANI and BiVO₄, which promoted the migration efficiency of photo-generated electron holes. These findings open up ways for the potential use of BiVO₄@PANI in industries, environmental remediation, pharmaceutical and medical sectors. Nevertheless, biocompatibility for human tissues should be thoroughly examined to lead to future improvements in photocatalytic performance and increase antibacterial efficacy.

Degradation of ciprofloxacin by a constitutive g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunction under a persulfate system

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a third-generation quinolone antimicrobial with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and is not fully metabolized in the human body, resulting in more than 70% of CIP being excreted into water as a prodrug. In this study, g-C₃N₄/BiOCl heterojunction structure composites were prepared to study the degradation effect of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under photocatalytic conditions. The results showed that CIP at 10 mg L^-1 was best degraded after 90 min at 0.3 g L^-1 g-C₃N₄/BiOCl-2, pH of 5.8 and PS dosing of 1 mM. The quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) confirmed that ˙OH, ˙SO₄ ^- and h⁺ played a major role. After the photocatalytic degradation of this reaction system, the biological toxicity of CIP was effectively controlled. This material is stable and the CIP removal rate remained above 80% after four cycles of experiments.

Self-Assembled Synthesis of Porous Iron-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Nitrogen Fixation

In this study, Fe-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Fe-MCNC) with varying Fe contents was synthesized via a supramolecular approach, followed by thermal exfoliation, and was then used for accelerated photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and nitrogen fixation. Various techniques were used to study the physicochemical properties of the MCN (g-C₃N₄ from melamine) and Fe-MCNC (MCN for g-C₃N₄ and C for cyanuric acid) catalysts. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images clearly demonstrate that the morphology of Fe-MCNC changes from planar sheets to porous, partially twisted (partially developed nanotube and nanorod) nanostructures. The elemental mapping study confirms the uniform distribution of Fe on the MCNC surface. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) results suggest that the Fe species might exist in the Fe³⁺ state and form Fe-N bonds with N atoms, thereby extending the visible light absorption areas and decreasing the band gap of MCN. Furthermore, doping with precise amounts of Fe might induce exfoliation and increase the specific surface area, but excessive Fe could destroy the MCN structure. The optimized Fe-MCNC nanostructure had a specific surface area of 23.6 m² g^-1, which was 8.1 times greater than that of MCN (2.89 m² g^-1). To study its photocatalytic properties, the nanostructure was tested for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and nitrogen fixation; 2Fe-MCNC shows the highest photocatalytic activity, which is approximately 13.3 times and 2.4 times better, respectively, than MCN-1H. Due to its high efficiency and stability, the Fe-MCNC nanostructure is a promising and ideal photocatalyst for a wide range of applications.

Architecture and Kinetic Studies of Photocatalytic H2O2 Generation and H2 Evolution through Regulation of Spatial Charge Transfer via Z-Scheme Path over a (001) Facet Engineered TiO2@MXene/B-g-C3N4 Ternary Hybrid

Spatial charge separation and migration are the critical shortcomings dominating the core energy conversion corridors of photocatalytic systems. Here, a biomimetic multi-interfacial architecture providing strong coupled interaction and rapid charge transmission for photostable and competent photocatalytic H2O2 production and H2 evolution is proposed. The triple-hybrid all-solid-state Z-scheme system was formed with the (001) facet exposed TiO2 nanosheets derived from MXene layers and B-g-C3N4 nanosheets (M/(001)TiO2@BCN) through an electrostatic self-assembly strategy with intimate electronic interaction due to Ti orbital modulation and proper stacking among the hybrids. The metallic and highly conductive MXene layers act as solid state electron mediators in the Z-scheme heterojunction that promote electron-hole separation and migration efficiency. Specifically, the MTBCN-12.5 composite provides optimum yield of H2O2 up to 1480.1 μmol h-1 g-1 and a H2 evolution rate of 408.4 μmol h-1 (with ACE 6.7%), which are 4 and 20 fold greater than the pristine BCN, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is systematically identified by the increased surface area, higher cathodic and anodic current densities of -1.01 and 2.27 mA cm-2, delayed charge recombination as supported by PL and EIS measurement, and excellent photostability. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is validated by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis, cyclic voltametric analysis, and the radical trapping experiment as detected by PL analysis. This research marks a substantial advancement and establishes the foundation for future design ideas in accelerating charge transfer.

Investigation on the role of graphene-based composites for in photocatalytic degradation of phenol-based compounds in wastewater: a review

The ineptitude of conventional water management systems to eradicate noxious compounds leads to the development of advanced treatment systems. The disclosure of graphene-based photocatalytic degradation for the eradication of phenolic compounds has become the "apple of the eye" for many researchers. This review article describes the advanced research progress during the period of 2008-2021 in graphene-based nanocomposites and discusses their different synthesis methods. We will also talk about the applications of nanocomposite in water splitting, dye degradation, solar fuel generations, and organic transformations. Multicomponent heterojunction structure, co-catalyst cohering, and noble metal coupling have been inspected to enhance the photocatalytic performance of graphene-based composite by increasing charge separation and stability. The photocatalytic system's remarkable stability has been described in terms of facile recyclability. The adsorption ability of phenolic compounds has been addressed in the form of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm with various factors (pH, concentration, the intensity of light, the effect of catalyst, the effect of time, etc.). The purpose of this review is to survey mechanisms and processes that enlist graphene-based composite in terms of efficacy and dose of catalyst required to attain 99% degradation. Nanoparticles may cause toxicity and a pretext for their toxicity has been mentioned. Finally, it is anticipated that this article could allocate consequential knowledge to fabricating graphene-based composites that are in crucial demand of being discussed in future research.
