Cooperativity in supported metal single atom catalysis

Hydrogenation Reactions with Synergistic Catalysis of Pd single atoms and nanoparticles under Near-Ambient Conditions

Due to the limited resources and high cost of noble metals, boosting their catalytic activities is highly desired in the current catalysis industry. Here, we report a synergetic catalyst, combining Pd²⁺ and Pd⁰ species in a nitrogen-doped porous carbons (NPC), which shows boosted catalytic activities in hydrogenation reactions of organic nitro compounds (nitrobenzene, 4-nitrophenol, 1-nitronaphthalene and 1-nitropropane) under near ambient conditions. This synergetic catalyst NPC-[Pd] was synthesized by partial reduction of a palladium-loaded NPC. The catalytic activities and selectivity of NPC-[Pd] for hydrogenation were enhanced significantly compared with those of NPC-Pd²⁺ or NPC-Pd⁰ nanoparticles. Theoretical calculations show that H₂ preferentially dissociates on Pd nanoparticles, and then organic molecules (nitrobenzene) can be captured and react with the dissociated H atom on Pd²⁺ sites. Similar reaction procedure also occur on Pt or Rh. Hydrogenation of different aromatic compounds with different functional groups (naphthalene, 4-nitrochlorobenzene, benzaldehyde and acetophenone) confirmed the broad excellent catalytic activity of this synergistic catalyst.

Solvent-Free Hydrogenation of Squalene Using Parts per Million Levels of Palladium Supported on Carbon Nanotubes: Shift from Batch Reactor to Continuous-Flow System

The transition from batch catalytic processes to continuous flow processes requires highly active and stable catalysts that still need to be developed. The preparation and characterization of catalysts where palladium single atoms and nanoparticles are simultaneously present on carbon nanotubes were recently reported by us. These catalysts are considerably more active than commercial or previously described catalysts for the liquid phase hydrogenation of terpenes. Herein is shown that under solvent-free conditions, squalene (SQE) could be converted into squalane (SQA,>98 %) using only 300 ppm of Pd in less than 1.4 h at 20 bar H₂ and 120 °C. Catalyst stability was assessed in a lab-scale flow reactor, and long-term experiments led to turnover number (TON) higher than 300000 without any detectable loss in the activity. Then, the implementation of this catalyst in a commercial intensified continuous-flow milli-reactor pilot was achieved. High purity SQA (>98 %) could be obtained by continuous hydrogenation of solvent-free SQE at 180 °C and 30 bar H₂ with a contact time below 15 min. A production capacity of 3.6 kg per day of SQA could be obtained with an effective reactor volume (V_R ) of 43.2 mL for this complex 3 phase reaction. Large-scale production can now be foreseen thanks to seamless scale-up provided by the continuous flow pilot supplier.

Single atoms and small clusters of atoms may accompany Au and Pd dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles

We report the presence of small clusters of atoms (<1 nm) (SCs) and single atoms (SAs) in solutions containing 1-2 nm dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs). Au and Pd DENs were imaged using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to identify and quantify the SAs/SCs. Two main findings have emerged from this work. First, the presence or absence of SAs/SCs depends on both the terminal functional group of the dendrimer (-NH₂ or -OH) and the elemental composition of the DENs (Au or Pd). Second, dialysis can be used to remove the majority of SAs/SCs in cases where a high density of SAs/SCs are present. The foregoing conclusions provide insights into the mechanisms for Au and Pd DEN synthesis and stability. Ultimately, these results demonstrate the need for careful characterization of systems containing nanoparticles to ensure that SAs/SCs, which may be below the detection limit of most analytical methods, are taken into consideration (especially for catalysis experiments).

Carbide coating on nickel to enhance the stability of supported metal nanoclusters

The influence on the growth of cobalt (Co)-based nanostructures of a surface carbide (Ni₂C) layer formed at the Ni(100) surface is revealed via complementary scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and first-principles calculations. On clean Ni(100) below 200 °C in the sub-monolayer regime, Co forms randomly distributed two-dimensional (2D) islands, while on Ni₂C it grows in the direction perpendicular to the surface as well, thus forming two-atomic-layers high islands. We present a simple yet powerful model that explains the different Co growth modes for the two surfaces. A jagged step decoration, not visible on stepped Ni(100), is present on Ni₂C. This contrasting behavior on Ni₂C is explained by the sharp differences in the mobility of Co atoms for the two cases. By increasing the temperature, Co dissolution is activated with almost no remaining Co at 250 °C on Ni(100) and Co islands still visible on the Ni₂C surface up to 300 °C. The higher thermal stability of Co above the Ni₂C surface is rationalized by ab initio calculations, which also suggest the existence of a vacancy-assisted mechanism for Co dissolution in Ni(100). The methodology presented in this paper, combining systematically STM measurements with first-principles calculations and computational modelling, opens the way to controlled engineering of bimetallic surfaces with tailored properties.

Different Bonding Defects on Dual-Metal Single-Atom Electrocatalyst CoZnN6(OH) for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Since dual-metal single-atom catalyst (CoZnN/C) has been experimentally synthesized by atomically arching CoZn on N-doped carbon nanofibers and exhibited potential electrocatalysis activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we perform first-principles calculation to identify the high active sites at different defects by comparing the four-step ORR processes on the constructed four CoZnN 6 models on graphene. The corresponding N-edge effect, dopant effect and C-edge ring-closing effect are evaluated with the ORR evolution on different bonding environments, including pristine CoZnN 6 (OH), nanoribbon (NR) along zigzag direction, substitution of oxygen/carbon (C/O substitution), and C-edge ring-closing configurations. OH-ligand is shown to significantly improve the ORR activities for all the considered structures, especially, C-substituted CoZnN 6 (OH), NR-CoZnN 5 O(OH) and CoZnN 6 (OH) with C-edge-effect exhibit obviously reduced overpotentials (h lim = 0.28, 0.48 and 0.41 V) of RDS among all the considered nine candidates. By plotting the relationship between the limiting potentials (U lim ) and free energies of intermediate *OH (DG OH* ), two prior catalysts of pristine-CoZnN 5 C(OH) and defect-CoZnN 6 CH(OH) are located near the top of the volcano curve with higher U lim = 0.95 and 0.82 V than Pt(111) (U lim = 0.80 V), implying that C-substitution could facilitate ORR performance in pristine- and defect-CoZnN 6 (OH) bonding situation.

Recent advanced development of metal-loaded mesoporous organosilicas as catalytic nanoreactors

Ordered periodic mesoporous organosilicas have been widely applied in adsorption/separation/sensor technologies and the fields of biomedicine/biotechnology as well as catalysis. Crucially, surface modification with functional groups and metal complexes or nanoparticle loading has ensured high efficacy and efficiency. This review will highlight the current state of design and catalytic application of transition metal-loaded mesoporous organosilica nanoreactors. It will outline prominent synthesis approaches for the grafting of metal complexes, metal salt adsorption and in situ preparation of metal nanoparticles, and summarize the catalytic performance of the resulting mesoporous organosilica hybrid materials. Finally, the potential prospects and challenges of metal-loaded mesoporous organosilica nanoreactors are addressed.

Tunable Assembly of Protein Enables Fabrication of Platinum Nanostructures with Different Catalytic Activity

Proteins are promising biofunctional units for the construction of nanomaterials (NMs) due to their abundant binding sites, intriguing self-assembly properties, and mild NM synthetic conditions. Tobacco mosaic virus coat protein (TMVCP) is a protein capable of self-assembly into distinct morphologies depending on the solution pH and ionic strength. Herein, we report the use of TMVCP as a building block to organize nanosized platinum into discrete nanorings and isolated nanoparticles by varying the solution pH to modulate the protein assembly state. Compared with a commercial Pt/C catalyst, the TMVCP-templated platinum materials exhibited significant promotion of the catalytic activity and stability toward methanol electrooxidation in both neutral and alkaline conditions. The enhanced catalytic performance is likely facilitated by the protein support. Additionally, Pt nanorings outperformed isolated nanoparticles, although they are both synthesized on TMVCP templates. This could be due to the higher mechanical stability of the protein disk structure and possible cooperative effects between adjacent nanoparticles in the ring with narrow interparticle spacing.

Stepped M@Pt(211) (M = Co, Fe, Mo) single-atom alloys promote the deoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics: mechanism, kinetics, and descriptors

HDO of lignin-derived phenolics on stepped M@Pt(211) (M = Co, Fe, Mo) single-atom alloy was computationally explored. Either C–O bond length or *OH binding energy was confirmed as an effective catalytic descriptor for predicting HDO performance.
