Constructing chiral gold nanorod oligomers using a spatially separated sergeants-and-soldiers effect

Site-selective growth and plasmonic spectral properties of L-shaped Janus Au-Ag gold nanodumbbells for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Ligand-mediated interface control has been broadly applied as a powerful tool in constructing asymmetric multicomponent nanoparticles (AMNP), and induces the anisotropic growth with fine-tuning morphology, composition, plasmonic property and functionality. As a new kind of AMNP, the synthesis of Janus Au-Ag nanoparticles with tunable negative surface curvature is still a challenge. Here, we demonstrate that the synergistic surface energy effects between gold nanodumbbells (Au NDs) with a negative surface curvature and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) can direct the site-selective growth of anisotropic silver domains on gold nanodumbbells (Au NDs@Ag NPs). By adjusting the 4-MBA concentration-dependent interfacial energy, the Au NDs@Ag NPs could be continuously tuned from dumbbell-like core-shell structures, to L-shaped Janus, and then rod-like core-shell structures with directional and asymmetric spatial distributions of resizable Ag domains by site-selective growth. Based on the calculation results of discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method, it has been found that the Au NDs@Ag L-shaped Janus NPs with Ag island domains created polarization orientation-dependent plasmonic extinction spectra and hot spots around the negatively curved waist and Ag domains. The L-shaped Janus Au NDs@Ag NPs exhibited significantly plasmonic spectrum properties with four apparent LSPR peaks that cover from visible to near-infrared range and higher surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity compared with the original Au NDs. The best SERS enhancement factor of 1.41 × 10⁷ was achieved. This synergistic surface energy effect-based method involving the asymmetric growth of silver coating on gold nanoparticles with negatively curved surface presents a new method to design and fabricate nanometer optical devices based on asymmetric multicomponent nanoparticles.

Enhanced chiroptic properties of nanocomposites of achiral plasmonic nanoparticles decorated with chiral dye-loaded micelles

The development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials with both large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and high emission efficiency continues to be a major challenge. Here, we present an approach to improve the overall CPL performance by integrating triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) with localized surface plasmon resonance. Dye-loaded chiral micelles possessing TTA-UC ability are designed and attached on the surface of achiral gold nanorods (AuNRs). The longitudinal and transversal resonance peaks of AuNRs overlap with the absorption and emission of dye-loaded chiral micelles, respectively. Typically, 43-fold amplification of g_lum value accompanied by 3-fold enhancement of upconversion are obtained simultaneously when Au@Ag nanorods are employed in the composites. More importantly, transient absorption spectra reveal a fast accumulation of spin-polarized triplet excitons in the composites. Therefore, the enhancement of chirality-induced spin polarization should be in charge of the amplification of g_lum value. Our design strategy suggests that combining plasmonic nanomaterials with chiral organic materials could aid in the development of chiroptical nanomaterials.

Chiral Au Nanorods: Synthesis, Chirality Origin, and Applications

Chiral Au nanorods (c-Au NRs) with diverse architectures constitute an interesting nanospecies in the field of chiral nanophotonics. The numerous possible plasmonic behaviors of Au NRs can be coupled with chirality to initiate, tune, and amplify their chiroptical response. Interdisciplinary technologies have boosted the development of fabrication and applications of c-Au NRs. Herein, we have focused on the role of chirality in c-Au NRs which helps to manipulate the light-matter interaction in nontraditional ways. A broad overview on the chirality origin, chirality transfer, chiroptical activities, artificially synthetic methodologies, and circularly polarized applications of c-Au NRs will be summarized and discussed. A deeper understanding of light-matter interaction in c-Au NRs will help to manipulate the chirality at the nanoscale, reveal the natural evolution process taking place, and set up a series of circularly polarized applications.

Gold-Nanoparticle-Based Chiral Plasmonic Nanostructures and Their Biomedical Applications

As chiral antennas, plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance chiral responses of chiral materials by forming hybrid structures and improving their own chirality preference as well. Chirality-dependent properties of plasmonic NPs broaden application potentials of chiral nanostructures in the biomedical field. Herein, we review the wet-chemical synthesis and self-assembly fabrication of gold-NP-based chiral nanostructures. Discrete chiral NPs are mainly obtained via the seed-mediated growth of achiral gold NPs under the guide of chiral molecules during growth. Irradiation with chiral light during growth is demonstrated to be a promising method for chirality control. Chiral assemblies are fabricated via the bottom-up assembly of achiral gold NPs using chiral linkers or guided by chiral templates, which exhibit large chiroplasmonic activities. In describing recent advances, emphasis is placed on the design and synthesis of chiral nanostructures with the tuning and amplification of plasmonic circular dichroism responses. In addition, the review discusses the most recent or even emerging trends in biomedical fields from biosensing and imaging to disease diagnosis and therapy.

Liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials: from chiral plasmonics to circularly polarized luminescence

Chiral nanomaterials with intrinsic chirality or spatial asymmetry at the nanoscale are currently in the limelight of both fundamental research and diverse important technological applications due to their unprecedented physicochemical characteristics such as intense light-matter interactions, enhanced circular dichroism, and strong circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art advances in liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials. The chiroptical properties of chiral nanomaterials are touched, and their fundamental design principles and bottom-up synthesis strategies are discussed. Different chiral functional nanomaterials based on liquid-crystalline soft templates, including chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and chiral luminescent nanomaterials, are systematically introduced, and their underlying mechanisms, properties, and potential applications are emphasized. This review concludes with a perspective on the emerging applications, challenges, and future opportunities of such fascinating chiral nanomaterials. This review can not only deepen our understanding of the fundamentals of soft-matter chirality, but also shine light on the development of advanced chiral functional nanomaterials toward their versatile applications in optics, biology, catalysis, electronics, and beyond.

Recent developments in the chiroptical properties of chiral plasmonic gold nanostructures: bioanalytical applications

The presence of excess L-amino acid in the Murchison meteorite, circular polarization effect in the genesis of stars and existence of chirality in interstellar molecules contribute to the origin of life on earth. Chiral-sensitive techniques have been employed to untangle the secret of the symmetries of the universe, designing of effective secure drugs and investigation of chiral biomolecules. The relationship between light and chiral molecules was employed to probe and explore such molecules using spectroscopy techniques. The mutual interaction between electromagnetic spectrum and chirality of matter give rise to distinct optical response, which advances vital information contents in chiroptical spectroscopy. Chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticle exhibits distinctive circular dichroism peaks in broad wavelength range thereby crossing the limits of its characterization. The emergence of strong optical activity of gold nanosystem is related to its high polarizability, resulting in plasmonic and excitonic effects on incident photons. Inspired by the development of advanced chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and exploring its properties, this review gives an overview of various chiral gold nanostructures and the mechanism behind its chiroptical properties. Finally, we highlight the application of different chiral gold nanomaterials in the field of catalysis and medical applications with special emphasis to biosensing and biodetection.
