Structural transformation between rutile and spinel crystal lattices in Ru-Co binary oxide nanotubes: enhanced electron transfer kinetics for the oxygen evolution reaction

Tuning Octahedron Sites of CoV2O4 via Cationic Competition for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Doping transition metal oxide spinels with metal ions represents a significant strategy for optimizing the electronic structure of electrocatalysts. Herein, a bimetallic Fe and Ru doping strategy to fine-tune the crystal structure of CoV2O4 spinel for highly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is presented performance. The incorporation of Fe and Ru is observed at octahedral sites within the CoV2O4 structure, effectively modulating the electronic configuration of Co. Density functional theory calculations have confirmed that Fe acts as a novel reactive site, replacing V. Additionally, the synergistic effect of Fe, Co, and Ru effectively optimizes the Gibbs free energy of the intermediate species, reduces the reaction energy barrier, and accelerates the kinetics toward OER. As expected, the best-performing CoVFe0.5Ru0.5O4 displays a low overpotential of 240 mV (@10 mA cm-2) and a remarkably low Tafel slope of 38.9 mV dec-1, surpassing that of commercial RuO2. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding long-term durability lasting for 72 h. This study provides valuable insights for the design of highly active polymetallic spinel electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Mo-Doped Mesoporous RuO2 Spheres as High-Performance Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalyst

The development of highly active and acid-stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for water electrolysis technology. Herein, a highly efficient molybdenum-doped mesoporous ruthenium dioxide sphere (Mo-RuO2 ) catalyst is fabricated by a facile impregnation and post-calcination method using mesoporous carbon spheres to template the mesostructure. The optimal Mo0.15 -RuO2 catalyst with Mo doping amount of 15 mol.% exhibits a significantly low overpotential of 147 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 38 mV decade-1 , and enhanced electrochemical stability in acidic electrolyte, far superior to the commercial RuO2 catalyst. The experimental results and theoretical analysis reveal that the remarkable electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the large surface area of the mesoporous spherical structure, the structural robustness of the interconnected mesoporous framework, and the change in the electronic structure of Ru active sites induced by Mo doping. These excellent advantages make Mo-doped mesoporous RuO2 spheres a promising catalyst for highly efficient electrocatalytic OER in acidic media.

Mixed Oxide Electrodes Based on Ruthenium and Copper: Electrochemical Properties as a Function of the Composition and Method of Manufacture

The development of mixed oxide electrodes is being intensively investigated to reduce the high cost associated with the use of noble metals and to obtain versatile and long-lasting devices. To evaluate their use for charge storage or anodic oxidation, in this paper, thin-film electrodes coated with ruthenium (RuOx) and copper oxide (CuOx) are fabricated by thermal decomposition of organic solutions containing the precursors by drop-casting on titanium (Ti) foils. The coating consisted of four layers of metal oxide. To investigate the effect of copper (Cu) on electrochemical performances, different approaches are adopted by varying the ratios of precursors’ concentration and including a RuOx interlayer. A comparison with samples obtained by only RuOx has been also performed. The electrodes are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic (CV) and linear sweep (LSV) voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and corrosion tests. The addition of Cu enhances the capacitive response of the materials and promotes electron transfer reversibility. The coatings obtained by the highest Ru:Cu ratio (95:5) exhibit a more uniform surface distribution and increased corrosion resistance. The interlayer is beneficial to further reduce the corrosion susceptibility and to promote the oxygen evolution but detrimental in the charge storage power. The results suggest the possibility to enhance the electrochemical performance of expensive RuOx through a combination with a low amount of cheaper and more abundant CuOx.

Manipulating Ru oxidation within electrospun carbon nanofibers to boost hydrogen and oxygen evolution for electrochemical overall water splitting

1D bifunctional RuO2/Ru-CNFs-350 catalyst is fabricated to show high activity and remarkable durability toward both OER and HER due to the formation of a RuO2/Ru heterostructure and the carbon substrate.
