Biomimicking spider webs for effective fog water harvesting with electrospun polymer fibers

Harnessing the Coil Electrospinning Method for Fabricating Superflexible and Multiscale-Patterned Fibrous Tubular Scaffolds with Topographical Features

The fibrous tubular scaffold (FTS) has potential as a vascular graft; however, its clinical application is hindered by insufficient mechanical properties. Inadequate mechanical properties of vascular grafts can lead to some serious side effects such as intimal hyperplasia, luminal expansion, and blood thrombogenicity. In this study, we developed a novel fibrous tubular scaffold comprising multiscale fibers to ensure superior mechanical properties. Our novel approach involves a one-step manufacturing method that can fabricate the superflexible fibrous tubular scaffold (SF-FTS) with topographical features via a modified electrospinning setup. We investigated the effect of humidity and temperature during the fabrication process on the formation of multiscale fibers. It was demonstrated that the incorporation of multiscale fibers and topographical features significantly enhances the mechanical properties of FTS. The mechanical advantages of SF-FTS were confirmed through the kinking resistance test, compressive test, and in vivo experiments. Additionally, we explored the interaction between the multiscale fibers and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) behavior. Our results suggest a novel strategy for fabricating FTS with advanced mechanical properties, and the designed SF-FTS holds promise as a potential candidate for clinical applications.

Environmentally Friendly and All-Dry Hydrophobic Patterning of Graphene Oxide for Fog Harvesting

This study examines the fog-harvesting ability of graphene oxide surfaces patterned by hydrophobic domains. The samples were prepared from graphene deposited using low pressure chemical vapor deposition, which was later plasma oxidized to obtain hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) surfaces. Hydrophobic domains on GO surfaces were formed by initiated CVD (iCVD) of a low-surface-energy poly(perfluorodecyl alkylate) (PPFDA) polymer. Hence, patterned surfaces with hydrophobic/hydrophilic contrast were produced with ease in an all-dry manner. The structures of the as-deposited graphene and PPFDA films were characterized using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer analyses, respectively. The fog harvesting performance of the samples was measured using the fog generated by a nebulizer, in which the average diameter of the fog droplets is comparable to meteorological fog. According to the fog harvesting experiment results, 100 cm2 of the as-patterned surface can collect fog up to 2.5 L in 10 h in a foggy environment. Hence, hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterned surfaces in this study can be considered as promising fog harvesting materials. Both CVD techniques used in the production of hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterned surfaces can be easily applied to the production of large-scale materials.

Dual-Coating of Fluorinated Polydimethylsiloxane/Fluorinated SiO2 Nanoparticles for Superhydrophobic and High-Efficiency Bacteriostatic Surface

A simple two-step spray method is used to prepare superhydrophobic and bacteriostatic surfaces, involving dual-coating with polydimethylsiloxane-normal-fluorine (PDMS-NF) or branched-fluorine (PDMS-BF) in combination with fluorinated silica nanoparticles (FSiO2 -NPs) using a spray technique. This approach has the potential to create surfaces with both water-repellent and antimicrobial properties, which could be useful in a variety of applications. It is noteworthy that the dual-coating on cotton fabric exhibited an impressive dual-scale roughness and achieved superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 158° and a hysteresis of less than 3°. Additionally, the coating was subjected to an ultra-high concentration of bacteria (109 CFU/mL) and was still able to inhibit more than 80 % of attachment, demonstrating its effectiveness as a bacteriostatic surface.

A review of the methods of harvesting atmospheric moisture

Moisture is an inherent constituent of air present across the world. The relative humidity varies with the change in temperature and climate specific to a region. In some regions of the world, there may be a relatively inadequate number of grains of moisture in the air in comparison with other regions. These factors widen the scope for the deployment of decentralized technology to capture water. The effectiveness in capturing moisture gains significance in these regions. Among the numerous forms of moisture, fog and dew are studied in depth. Over time, flora and fauna in different ecosystems have adapted to capture moisture as well as repel excesses of it according to their requirements. Therefore, bio-inspired studies and tailored engineering strategies have been incorporated in this review. Since efficient technologies are required at moisture-scarce locations, active moisture harvesting has also been studied. The use of innovative materials along with different energy sources to capture water is elaborated. The effects of climate change and environmental contamination on harvested moisture are therefore assessed. Community participation and economical use of harvested fog or dew influence the sustainability of moisture-capture projects. Therefore, this article also provides an insight into the services of decentralized water-harvesting projects run by diverse organizations and researchers across the globe.

Bionic Surfaces for Fog Collection: A Comprehensive Review of Natural Organisms and Bioinspired Strategies

Water scarcity has become a critical global threat, particularly in arid and underdeveloped regions. However, certain insects and plants have evolved the capability to obtain water from fog under these arid conditions. Bionic fog collection, characterized by passive harvesting, minimal energy requirements, and low maintenance costs, has proven to be an efficient method for water harvesting, offering a sustainable water source. This review introduces two superwettable surfaces, namely, superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces, detailing their preparation methods and applications in fog collection. The fog collection mechanisms of three typical natural organisms, Namib Desert beetles, spider silk, and cactus, along with their bionic surfaces for fog collection devices, are discussed. Additionally, other biological surfaces exhibiting fog transport properties are presented. The main challenges regarding the fabrication and application of bionic fog collection are summarized. Furthermore, we firmly believe that environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable fog collection materials or devices hold promising prospects for future applications.

Laser-Textured Hybrid Brass Pattern Array Surface for High-Efficiency Fog Collection

Fog collection holds promise for addressing water shortage. However, the conventional fabrication of fog collection devices, normally chemical methods, suffers many challenges, such as complicated preparation and environmental issues. Herein, we proposed a green fabrication strategy to construct superhydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces on the brass substrate via the combination of laser fabrication and heat treatment. The wettability of brass is directly dictated by the laser process parameters. The different superhydrophobic/hydrophilic hybrid pattern surface with a rectangular/triangular array was designed for an optimal fog collection performance. The maximum water collection efficiency of the prepared surface is measured up to 427.36 mg h-1 cm-2, which is 97% higher than that of the control sample. Furthermore, the surface can be folded into different forms to realize a flexible collector. We envision that our work provides a green fabrication strategy to construct a superwetting surface for highly efficient fog collection.

Femtosecond-laser-patterned origami Janus membrane toward enhanced water fog harvesting

Fog harvesting is an effective way to relieve water shortages in arid regions; thus, improving the efficiency of fog harvesting is urgently needed for both academic research and practical applications. Here, we report an origami patterned Janus (O-P-Janus) membrane using laser-ablated copper foams inspired by origami handcraft and traditional Chinese architecture. Compared to the planar fully ablated Janus membrane, our O-P-Janus membrane, with selectively ablated rectangular areas, exhibits an exceptional water collection rate (WCR) of approximately 267%. The underlying physical mechanism of WCR enhancement is revealed and attributed to the enhanced fog adsorbing capacity on the upper superhydrophobic origami structures and the accelerated removal of accumulated droplets beneath the lower superhydrophilic V-shaped tips. This O-P-Janus membrane with excellent fog collection performance should open up a new avenue for both device designs and potential applications toward structuring-enhanced fog collection and microfluidic control platforms.

Overview of the design of bionic fine hierarchical structures for fog collection

Nature always uses its special wisdom to construct elegant and suitable schemes. Consequently, organisms in the flora and fauna are endowed with fine hierarchical structures (HS) to adapt to the harsh environment due to many years of evolution. Water is one of the most important resources; however, easy access to it is one the biggest challenges faced by human beings. In this case, fog collection (FC) is considered an efficient method to collect water, where bionic HS can be the bridge to efficiently facilitate the process of the FC. In this review, firstly, we discuss the basic principles of FC. Secondly, the role of HS in FC is analyzed in terms of the microstructure of typical examples of plants and animals. Simultaneously, the water-harvesting function of HS in a relatively new organism, fungal filament, is also presented. Thirdly, the HS design in each representative work is analyzed from a biomimetic perspective (single to multiple biomimetic approaches). The role of HS in FC, and then the FC performance of each work are analyzed in order of spatial dimension from a bionic perspective. Finally, the challenges at this stage and the outlook for the future are presented.

Photoresponsive Electrospun Fiber Meshes with Switchable Wettability for Effective Fog Water Harvesting in Variable Humidity Conditions

The global water supply worsens yearly with climate change; therefore, the need for sustainable water resources is growing. One of them is fog water collectors with variable surface wettability, with multifunctional designs for utilization worldwide and to address regions with low humidity levels. Therefore, we created fiber meshes with a photoresponsive switchable surface. This study uses electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) meshes, whose wettability is controlled by adding TiO2. The fog water collection performance is studied at high and low humidity levels. With TiO2-PVDF, the electrospun mesh can be converted from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under UV irradiation and transformed back to a hydrophobic state with heat treatment. The switchable meshes were found to be more effective at water collection after UV irradiation at lower fog rates of 200 mL·h-1. The ability to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties as needed is highly desired in fog collection applications using electrospun meshes, as it can improve overall efficiency after UV irradiation.

Temperature and pH endurable self-assembled camellia-like nanostructure achieved on zinc sheet with superamphiphobicity for fog harvesting

Easy-implement and low-cost fabrication of super-hydrophobic/super-oleophobic materials is of great significance for efficient fog harvesting. Herein, we propose a simple two-step procedure based on Cu/1-octadecanethiol (ODT) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified zinc plates. Interestingly, the whole process mimics the blooming process of flowers in nature: the deposition of copper particle and the subsequent formation of SAM drives the surface undergo gradually stretches and finally blooms to camellia-like nanostructures. The water contact angle (WCA) and oil contact angle (OCA) reach 160 ± 1° and 159 ± 1° respectively, as a result of the formation of layered petal structure that traps air effectively, which is attributed as one of the most important factors for the superamphiphobic effect. In addition to much enhanced facility in fog collection, the materials maintain excellent performance in acid/base environments (1 ≤ pH ≤ 14), broad temperature conditions ranging from -18 °C to 240 °C, and the artificial sea environment, and exhibit capable wear resistance as well as self-cleaning property. The cooperation of all these multiple properties ensures the robustness and stability for efficient fog collection.

3D-printed spider-web structures for highly efficient water collection

Fog and moisture in nature are important freshwater resources, and the collection of these fog water is of great significance to arid regions. Inspired by the unique geometric structure of the spindle knot on spider silk, artificial fibers with periodic structures have been fabricated for water collection, which can effectively alleviate the problem of water shortage in arid areas. Traditional manufacturing methods are difficult to replicate the true shape of the spindle knot, and related research has encountered a bottleneck in improving water collection efficiency. 3D printing technology, which is different from traditional subtractive manufacturing, can directly replicate spider silk with periodic knots, making it possible to study water collection by artificial spider webs of various designs. Here, 3D printing technology is used to fabricate artificial spider webs with different geometric structures for efficient transportation and collection of water. In addition, the artificial spider web is treated with hydrophilic surfaces. In the humid environment for 2 h, the spider web with convex-concave multi-size spindle knots and multi-curvature connections has a maximum water collection capacity of 6.2g, and the mass of water collection is 35% higher than the existing best water collection artificial fibers. This work provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly route for the effective collection of humid air, and has certain reference value for the development of environmentally friendly water collection equipment.

High-Efficient Fog Harvest from a Synergistic Effect of Coupling Hierarchical Structures

Fog harvesting is an important method to solve the water shortage in arid and semi-arid areas by collecting water from air. Improving fog harvesting efficiency is still a big challenge to be overcome. Herein, under the inspiration of natural creatures, a novel harvesting structure that couples a hierarchical microchannel (HMC) needle with the Janus membrane by taking a conical pore as their junction is proposed. Such an HMC-conical pore-Janus membrane system can improve the harvesting efficiency by regulation of liquid behavior in the whole fog harvesting process involving droplet capture from air, high speed transport on the microchannel, and droplet detachment from Janus. The synergistic effects of the hierarchical channel-conical pore-Janus structure are exploited in terms of capture, transport, and detachment capabilities, and their underlying mechanism to enhance fog harvesting efficiency is built. Compared with the traditional harvesting structure, the proposed hierarchical channel-conical-Janus coupling mode was demonstrated to improve fog harvesting efficiency by 90%. Such a coupled system has potential applications in efficient fog harvesting systems, microfluidic devices, and liquid manipulation.

Bio-Inspired Robots and Structures toward Fostering the Modernization of Agriculture

Biomimetics is the interdisciplinary cooperation of biology and technology that offers solutions to practical problems by analyzing biological systems and transferring their principles into applications. This review article focused on biomimetic innovations, including bio-inspired soft robots and swarm robots that could serve multiple functions, including the harvesting of fruits, pest control, and crop management. The research demonstrated commercially available biomimetic innovations, including robot bees by Arugga AI Farming and the Robotriks Traction Unit (RTU) precision farming equipment. Additionally, soft robotic systems have made it possible to mitigate the risk of surface bruises, rupture, the crushing destruction of plant tissue, and plastic deformation in the harvesting of fruits with a soft rind such as apples, cherries, pears, stone fruits, kiwifruit, mandarins, cucumbers, peaches, and pome. Even though the smart farming technologies, which were developed to mimic nature, could help prevent climate change and enhance the intensification of agriculture, there are concerns about long-term ecological impact, cost, and their inability to complement natural processes such as pollination. Despite the problems, the market for bio-inspired technologies with potential agricultural applications to modernize farming and solve the abovementioned challenges has increased exponentially. Future research and development should lead to low-cost FEA robotic grippers and FEA-tendon-driven grippers for crop harvesting. In brief, soft robots and swarm robotics have immense potential in agriculture.

Review on the Development and Application of Directional Water Transport Textile Materials

Moisture (sweat) management in textile products is crucial to regulate human thermo-physiological comfort. Traditional hydrophilic textiles, such as cotton, can absorb sweat, but they retain it, leading to undesired wet adhesion sensation and even excessive cooling. To address such issues, the development of functional textiles with directional water transport (DWT) has garnered great deal of interest. DWT textile materials can realize directional water transport and prevent water penetration in the reverse direction, which is a great application for sweat release in daily life. In this review article, the mechanism of directional water transport is analyzed. Then, three key methods to achieve DWT performance are reviewed, including the design of the fabric structure, surface modification and electrospinning. In addition, the applications of DWT textile materials in functional clothing, electronic textiles, and wound dressing are introduced. Finally, the challenges and future development trends of DWT textile materials in the textile field are discussed.

Multiscale Janus Surface Structure of Trifolium Leaf with Atmospheric Water Harvesting and Dual Wettability Features

Numerous fascinating hierarchical surfaces from nature, including cactus spines, rice leaves, Namib desert beetle, spider silks, and pitcher plants, have been thoroughly investigated to emulate and architect superior surfaces for capturing sustainable, clean, and safe freshwater from the atmosphere. Hitherto, the adaxial side of biological surfaces has been meticulously investigated for wettability and atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) applications. However, the abaxial face has not yet attracted much scientific scrutiny. Here, we revealed the multifunctional Janus surface traits of Trifolium pratense (i.e., red clover) leaf with extrusive atmospheric water fishing ability on both adaxial and abaxial faces. Water harvesting is performed by conical outgrowths (microhairs). The individual hair's intriguing topography comprises asymmetric shape and surface roughness, which plays synergetic roles in water deposition and directional transport. The water collection quantity on the leaf surface is a function of hair density, which varies significantly on two sides. Noticeably, instead of gravitational pull, the hairs perform water reaping competence under the collective impact of surface energy and Laplace pressure gradients. Consequently, both straight-up and upside-down water harvesting are presented. Furthermore, the leaf surface exhibits dual water wettability features. The upper side manifests the water-repelling and water roll-off phenomenon. In contrast, the lower surface displays a water-retaining/or pinning effect. Optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, real-time optical visualization, and contact angle analysis were employed to characterize the natural and template specimens. The dorsiventral asymmetry of the Trifolium leaf examined in this work could be helpful for a plethora of applications, such as scalable AWH, rainwater collection, self-cleaning, and adhesive fixtures.
