Urchin-like hybrid nanostructures of CuOx/Fe2O3 from Cu-mediated pyrolysis of Fe-MOFs for catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

Bifunctional green nanoferrites as catalysts for simultaneous organic pollutants reduction and hydrogen generation: Upcycling strategy

The upcycling strategy is an approach that includes the conversion of waste into new higher value-added products. This study reports on a new methodology for the environmentally friendly synthesis of MFe2O4 spinel nanoferrites (M = Co, Cu, Fe and Mn) to be used as catalysts applied in the upcycling method. Thus, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), methyl orange, and methyl red to commercially valuable compounds was evaluated, as well as the simultaneous generation of hydrogen in a short time. Therefore, an eco-friendly synthesis was proposed, according to the 12 principles of green chemistry and sustainability. Product were obtained with satisfactory properties in terms of crystallinity, magnetic particle size, and magnetization. The materials exhibited excellent performance in catalytic reduction of 4-NP, whose reduction time decreased in the order MnFe2O4 > Fe3O4 > CoFe2O4 > CuFe2O4. This behavior highlighted the CuFe2O4 nanoferrite, which achieved 4-NP reduction in just 10 s. It proved that it could also be reused for 10 consecutive cycles while maintaining its crystalline structure. The catalyst was also effective in the reduction of azo dyes and subsequent production of substituted aromatic compounds suitable for use in chemical processes. Under the optimized conditions, the green CuFe2O4 catalyst was effective in producing hydrogen by hydrolysis. HGR and activation energy (Ea) values were of the order of 19,600 mL g-1 min-1 and 25.5 kJ mol-1, respectively. The results demonstrated the potential of this simple strategy for the environmental pollutant elimination and power generation.

Sphere-rod-like Ag/AgCl@Fe2O3 Z-scheme heterojunction as photocatalysts for efficient degradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Integration of multi-functional components into one is urgent for creating a viable platform to improve photocatalytic efficiency for environmental treatment. Here, MIL-88B-NH2 (Fe) was firstly employed to capture Ag+ cation for the formation of AgCl@MIL-88B-NH2 (Fe), and then turned into the strongly coupled Ag/AgCl@Fe2O3 with sphere-rod-like structure. As prepared Z-scheme Ag/AgCl@Fe2O3 heterojunction exhibited outstanding photocatalytic performance of tetracycline (TC) with a removal efficiency of 94.9% and a reaction kinetics of 0.0272 min-1, superior to single Ag/AgCl or Fe2O3, which attributed to the broad light absorption range and accelerated electron-hole pair separation stemmed from the synergistic effect between surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR) of metal Ag and AgCl/Fe2O3 heterojunction. Meanwhile, Ag/AgCl@Fe2O3 was found to be highly catalytic in the degradation of TC even after consecutive runs. Moreover, active species trapping experiments combined with ESR techniques revealed that superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, electron, and hole all were involved in photodegradation of TC process. Importantly, the degradation intermediate products of TC were revealed in depth by LC-MS, and a possible degradation pathway was further proposed. This work opens up new insights into the integration of functional composites for the construction of advanced photocatalysts applied in environmental purification.

Application of Fe-MOFs in Photodegradation and Removal of Air and Water Pollutants: A Review

Photocatalytic technology has received increasing attention in recent years. A pivotal facet of photocatalytic technology lies in the development of photocatalysts. Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, distinguished by their unique properties and structural characteristics, have emerged as a focal point of research in the field, finding widespread application in the photo-treatment and conversion of various substances. Fe-based MOFs have attained particular prominence. This review explores recent advances in the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous and gaseous substances. Furthermore, it delves into the interaction between the active sites of Fe-MOFs and pollutants, offering deeper insights into their mechanism of action. Fe-MOFs, as photocatalysts, predominantly facilitate pollutant removal through redox processes, interaction with acid sites, the formation of complexes with composite metal elements, binding to unsaturated metal ligands (CUSs), and hydrogen bonding to modulate their respiratory behavior. This review also highlights the focal points of future research, elucidating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in harnessing the characteristics and advantages of Fe-MOF composite catalysts. In essence, this review provides a comprehensive summary of research progress on Fe-MOF-based catalysts, aiming to serve as a guiding reference for other catalytic processes.
