A Fiber Sliding-Orientation Based Micromechanics Failure Model for Melt-Blown Nonwovens

The mechanical model of melt-blown nonwovens (MNs) serves as the foundation for performance optimization, which can offer helpful guidance for product material selection, structural design, and cost control. However, it is challenging to describe the micromechanics failure mechanism of MNs using the traditional mechanical model, which aims to match the model curve with the experimental result at the macrolevel. Herein, a micromechanics failure model for MNs based on sliding-orientation competition is developed. Through in situ observations of fiber position changes and the fluctuation of stress-strain curves, fiber sliding and orientation are introduced into the failure process of MNs. Due to fiber bonding and static friction, only orientation happens during the first stage of stretching. In dramatic contrast, the fibers will slide and orient in the second stage of stretching to change their positions in response to the external force. Sliding friction, fiber bonding, and static friction make up the stress of MNs, and the conflict of fiber sliding and orientation causes variations in the stress. The model has been successfully applied to polylactic acid (PLA) MNs, which proves the effectiveness of the model in MNs.

Regulation of polylactic acid using irradiation and preparation of PLA-SiO2-ZnO melt-blown nonwovens for antibacterial and air filtration

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens (MBs) have been widely used in disposable medical surgical masks and medical protective clothing, seriously threatening the environment. As a bio-based biodegradable polymer, polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted great attention in fabricating MBs. However, there are still issues with the undesirable spinnability of PLA and the limited filtration and antibacterial performance of PLA MBs. Herein, a high-efficiency, low-resistance, and antibacterial PLA filter is fabricated by melt-blown spinning and electret postprocessing technology. The irradiation technique is used to tune PLA chain structure, improving its spinnability. Further, silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles are added to enhance the charge storage stability of PLA MBs. With a constant airflow rate of 32 L min^-1, the PLA-based MBs exhibit a high particulate filtration efficiency of 94.8 ± 1.5%, an ultralow pressure drop of 14.1 ± 1.8 Pa, and an adequate bacterial filtration efficiency of 98 ± 1.2%, meeting the medical protective equipment standard. In addition, the zinc oxide (ZnO) masterbatches are doped into the blend and the antibacterial rate of PLA-based MBs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus is higher than 99%. This successful preparation and modification method paves the way for the large-scale production of PLA MBs as promising candidates for high-efficacy and antibacterial filters.

Binary Polyamide-Imide Fibrous Superelastic Aerogels for Fire-Retardant and High-Temperature Air Filtration

Fibrous air filtration materials are highly desirable for particle removal from high-temperature emission sources. However, the existing commercial filter materials suffer from either low filtration efficiency or high pressure drop, due to the difficulty in achieving small fiber diameter and high porosity simultaneously. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate mechanical robust fibrous aerogels by using dual-scale sized PAI/BMI filaments and fibers, which are derived from wet spinning and electrospinning technologies, respectively. The creativity of this design is that PAI/BMI filaments can serve as the enhancing skeleton and PAI/BMI fibers can assemble into high-porosity interconnected networks, enabling the improvement of both mechanical property and air filtration performance. The resultant dual-scale sized PAI/PBMI fibrous aerogels show a compressive stress of 8.36 MPa, a high filtration efficiency of 90.78% (particle diameter of 2.5 μm); for particle diameter over 5 μm, they have 99.99% ultra-high filtration efficiency, a low pressure drop of 20 Pa, and high QF of 0.12 Pa^-1, as well as thermostable and fire-retardant properties (thermal decomposition temperature up to 342.7 °C). The successive fabrication of this material is of great significance for the govern of industrial dust.
