Covalent organic frameworks and their composites for rechargeable batteries

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), characterized by well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, good stability, high precision, and flexible design, are a promising material for batteries and have received extensive attention from researchers in recent years. Compared with inorganic materials, COFs can construct elastic frameworks with better structural stability, and their chemical compositions and structures can be precisely adjusted and functionalized at the molecular level, providing an open pathway for the convenient transfer of ions. In this review, the energy storage mechanism and unique superiority of COFs and COF composites as electrodes, separators and electrolytes for rechargeable batteries are discussed in detail. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between the establishment of COF structures and their electrochemical performance in different batteries. Finally, this review summarizes the challenges and prospects of COFs and COF composites in battery equipment.

The Lithium Storage Mechanism of Zero-Strain Anode Materials with Ultralong Cycle Lives

At present, graphite is a widely used anode material in commercial lithium-ion batteries for its low cost, but the large volume expansion (about 10%) after fully lithiated makes the material prone to cracking and even surface stripping in the cycle. Therefore, the development of zero-strain anode materials (volume change <1%) is of great significance. LiAl5O8 is a zero-strain insertion anode material with a high theoretical specific capacity. However, the Li+ storage mechanism remains unclear, and the cycle life as well as fast-charging capability need to be greatly improved to meet the practical requirements. In this study, LiAl5O8 nanorods are prepared by utilizing aluminum ethoxide nanowires as a soft template and doped with the Zr element to further improve the Li+ diffusion coefficient and electronic conductivity, which in turn improves cycle and rate performances. The Zr-doped LiAl5O8 presents a high reversible capacity of 227.2 mAh g-1 after 20,000 cycles under 5 A g-1, which significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art anode materials. In addition, the Li+ storage mechanisms of LiAl5O8 and Zr-doped LiAl5O8 are clearly clarified with a variety of characterization techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance. This work greatly promotes the practical process of zero-strain insertion anode materials.

Pseudocapacitance-Dominated MnNb2 O6 -C Nanofiber Anode for Li-Ion Batteries

MnNb2 O6 anode has attracted much attention owing to its unique properties for holding Li ions. Unluckily, its application as a Li-ion battery anode is restricted by low capacity because of the inferior electronic conductivity and limited electron transfer. Previous studies suggest that structure and component optimization could improve its reversible capacity. This improvement is always companied by capacity increments, however, the reasons have rarely been identified. Herein, MnNb2 O6 -C nanofibers (NFs) with MnNb2 O6 nanoparticles (~15 nm) confined in carbon NFs, and the counterpart MnNb2 O6 NFs consisting of larger nanoparticles (40-100 nm) are prepared by electrospinning for clarifying this phenomenon. The electrochemical evaluations indicate that the capacity achieved by the MnNb2 O6 NF electrode presents an activation process and a degradation in subsequence. Meanwhile, the MnNb2 O6 -C NF electrode delivers high reversible capacity and ultra-stable cycling performance. Further analysis based on electrochemical behaviors and microstructure changes reveals that the partial structure rearrangement should be in charge of the capacity increment, mainly including pseudocapacitance increment. This work suggests that diminishing the dimensions of MnNb2 O6 nanoparticles and further confining them in a matrix could increase the pseudocapacitance-dominated capacity, providing a novel way to improve the reversible capacity of MnNb2 O6 and other intercalation reaction anodes.

Covalent Organic Framework-based Solid-State Electrolytes, Electrode Materials, and Separators for Lithium-ion Batteries

The increasing global energy consumption has led to the rapid development of renewable energy storage technologies. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been extensively studied and utilized for reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy storage. Nevertheless, designing new materials for LIB applications with high capacity and long-term stability is highly desired but remains a challenging task. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as superior candidates for LIB applications due to their high porosity, well-defined pores, highly customizable structure, and tunable functionalities. These merits enable the preparation of tailored COFs with predesigned redox-active moieties and suitable porous channels that can improve the lithium-ion storage and transportation. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of COFs and their composites for a variety of LIB applications, including (quasi) solid-state electrolytes, electrode materials, and separators. Finally, the challenges and potential future directions of employing COFs for LIBs are also briefly discussed, further promoting the foundation of this class of exciting materials for future advances in energy-related applications.

Application of New COF Materials in Secondary Battery Anode Materials

Covalent organic framework materials (COFs), as a new type of organic porous material, not only have the characteristics of flexible structure, abundant resources, environmental friendliness, etc., but also have the characteristics of a regular structure and uniform pore channels, so they have broad application prospects in secondary batteries. Their functional group structure, type, and number of active sites play a crucial role in the performance of different kinds of batteries. Therefore, this article starts from these aspects, summarizes the application and research progress of the COF anode materials used in lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and potassium-ion batteries in recent years, discusses the energy storage mechanism of COF materials, and expounds the application prospects of COF electrodes in the field of energy storage.

Manufacturing Technics for Fabric/Fiber-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators: From Yarns to Micro-Nanofibers

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), as a green energy harvesting technology, has aroused tremendous interest across many fields, such as wearable electronics, implanted electronic devices, and human-machine interfaces. Fabric and fiber-structured materials are excellent candidates for TENG materials due to their inherent flexibility, low cost, and high wearing comfort. Consequently, it is crucial to combine TENG with fabric/fiber materials to simultaneously leverage their mechanical energy harvesting and wearability advantages. In this review, the structure and fundamentals of TENG are briefly explained, followed by the introduction of three distinct methods for preparing fabric/fiber structures: spinning and weaving, wet spinning, and electrospinning. In the meantime, their applications have been discussed, focusing primarily on energy harvesting and wearable self-powered sensors. Finally, we discussed the future and challenges of fabric and fiber-based TENGs.
