New insights into the key bifunctional role of sulfur in Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts for ORR/OER

Pt nanoparticles anchored by oxygen vacancies in MXenes for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The improvement of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of nanomaterials is associated with the interfacial synergistic interaction and their hydrogen adsorption kinetics. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to accelerate the proton transfer and optimize the HER kinetics by constructing Pt-supported heterostructures based on the hydrogen spillover phenomenon. Herein, oxygen vacancies on the surface of MXene nanosheets were constructed via a high-temperature annealing method, which was employed to anchor/stabilize Pt nanoparticles and fabricate a Pt/MXene heterostructure. EPR and XPS analyses verified the presence of oxygen vacancies, which could enhance the intrinsic HER activity of the MXene. The HER catalytic performance was investigated by taking into account the surface structure of the MXene affected by the annealing temperature, the concentration of Pt and the number of deposition cycles. Electrochemical results showed that Pt/MXene with higher utilization of Pt was obtained at 900 °C and 0.05 mgPt mL-1. The 0.05-Pt/MXene-900 obtained at deposition of 60 cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution exhibited the optimized HER activity. The overpotential was 22 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and the Tafel slope was 42.41 mV dec-1. Furthermore, the accelerated HER kinetics was mainly due to the electron trapping ability of the MXene, small particles of Pt, as well as the enhanced charge transfer between the oxygen vacancies of the MXene and Pt. This strategy for constructing Pt-supported heterostructures based on the vacancy anchoring effects provides new ideas for the design of well-defined electrocatalysts toward the HER.

Volatile guest molecule mediated strategy to convert covalent organic framework into nitrogen, sulfur-doped carbon as metal-free oxygen reduction electrocatalysts

Covalent organic framework (COF) derived metal-free carbon materials have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a volatile guest molecule mediated-pyrolysis strategy was explored on a designed thiophene-rich and imine-linked COF. Through the modulation of guest mediators (iodine and sulfur), the properties of the as-obtained carbon materials can be well regulated. The optimized nitrogen and sulfur dual-doped carbon electrocatalyst demonstrates remarkable ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V and impressive durability, with only an 8% current loss over 21 h. The corresponding assembled zinc-air battery has a comparable power density (60 mW cm-2) to that of the commercial Pt/C. It is proposed that the coexistence of the guest mediators iodine and sulfur in the channels of COFs could prevent the loss of N species. The enhanced N content and N/S ratio are assumed to be responsible for the ORR performance. This study puts forward a novel strategy to prepare COF-derived carbon materials mediated by volatile guest molecules, which may provide new insights into the development of metal-free ORR catalysts.

Zn/N/S Co-doped hierarchical porous carbon as a high-efficiency oxygen reduction catalyst in Zn-air batteries

Zn-N-C catalysts have garnered attention as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their intrinsic limitations, including poor activity and a low density of active sites, continue to hinder their electrocatalytic performance. In this study, we have devised a dual-template strategy for the synthesis of Zn, N, S co-doped nanoporous carbon-based catalysts (Zn-N/S-C(S, Z)) with a substantial specific surface area and a graded pore structure. The introduction of S enhances electron localization around the Zn-Nx active centers, facilitating interactions with oxygen-containing substances. The resulting Zn-N/S-C(S, Z) sample exhibits outstanding performance in an alkaline solution, demonstrating a half-wave potential of 0.89 V. This value surpasses that of commercial Pt/C by 40 mV. Furthermore, when combined with RuO2 (Zn-N/S-C(S, Z) + RuO2), the catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in a Zn-air battery, offering an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.47 V and a peak power density of 290.8 mW cm-2. This study paves the way for the development of highly dispersed and highly active Zn-metal site catalysts, potentially replacing traditional Pt-based catalysts in various electrochemical devices.

Single-atom Zn with nitrogen defects on biomimetic 3D carbon nanotubes for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Single atoms catalysts (SACs) have promising development in electrocatalytic energy conversion. Nevertheless, rational design SACs with reversible oxygen electrocatalysis still remain challenge. Herein, we synthesized atomically dispersed Zn with N defect on three-dimensional (3D) biomimetic carbon nanotubes by secondary pyrolysis (Zn-N-C-2), which possesses excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional catalytic activities. The biomimetic 3D structure and unique "leaf-branch" system are beneficial to fully expose the active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Zn-N3-D can optimize the charge distribution and facilitate electron transfer step of OH*→O*. Zn-N-C-2 exhibits higher ORR activity than commercial Pt/C with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.85 V and OER overpotential of 450 mV at 10 mA cm-2. After being assembled into the air cathode of aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB), it demonstrates superior performances with long-term charge and discharge for more than 200 h. This work not only clarifies the controlled synthesis of N-defects Zn SACs with excellent bifunctional electrocatalyst, but also provide in-depth understanding of structural-performance relationships by regulating local microenvironments.

Constructing N,S and N,P Co-Coordination in Fe Single-Atom Catalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Redox Reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), in which the coordination environment plays a crucial role in activating the intrinsic activity of the central metal. Taking the FeN4 SAC as a probe, this work investigates the effect of introducing S or P atoms into N coordination (FeSx N4-x and FePx N4-x (x=1-4)) on the electronic structure optimization of Fe center and its catalytic performance. Attributing to the optimal Fe 3d orbitals, FePN3 can effectively activate O2 and promote ORR with a low overpotential of 0.29 V, surpassing FeN4 and most reported catalysts. FeSN3 is beneficial to H2 O activation and OER, proceeding with an overpotential of 0.68 V, which is superior to FeN4 . Both FePN3 and FeSN3 exhibit outstanding thermodynamic and electrochemical stability with negative formation energies and positive dissolution potentials. Hence, the N,P and N,S co-coordination might provide better catalytic environment than regular N coordination for SACs in ORR and OER. This work demonstrates FePN3 /FeSN3 as high-performance ORR/OER catalysts and highlights N,P and N,S co-coordination regulation as an effective approach to fine tune high atomically dispersed electrocatalysts.

Bifunctional Single Atom Catalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries: From Dynamic Mechanism to Rational Design

Ever-growing demands for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) call for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Among various electrocatalysts, single atom catalysts (SACs) have received increasing attention due to the merits of high atom utilization, structural tunability, and remarkable activity. Rational design of bifunctional SACs relies heavily on an in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms, especially dynamic evolution under electrochemical conditions. This requires a systematic study in dynamic mechanisms to replace current trial and error modes. Herein, fundamental understanding of dynamic oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction mechanisms for SACs is first presented combining in situ and/or operando characterizations and theoretical calculations. By highlighting structure-performance relationships, rational regulation strategies are particularly proposed to facilitate the design of efficient bifunctional SACs. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges are discussed. This review provides a thorough understanding of dynamic mechanisms and regulation strategies for bifunctional SACs, which are expected to pave the avenue for exploring optimum single atom bifunctional oxygen catalysts and effective ZABs.

Revealing Atomic Configuration and Synergistic Interaction of Single-Atom-Based Zn-Co-Fe Trimetallic Sites for Enhancing Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions

Anchoring single metal atom to carbon supports represents an exceptionally effective strategy to maximize the efficiency of catalysts. Recently, dual-atom catalysts (DACs) emerge as an intriguing candidate for atomic catalysts, which perform better than single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, the clarification of the polynary single-atom structures and their beneficial effects remains a daunting challenge. Here, atomically dispersed triple Zn-Co-Fe sites anchored to nitrogen-doped carbon (ZnCoFe-N-C) prepared by one-step pyrolysis of a designed metal-organic framework precursor are reported. The atomically isolated trimetallic configuration in ZnCoFe-N-C is identified by annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of trimetallic single atoms, nitrogen, and carbon, ZnCoFe-N-C exhibits excellent catalytic performance in bifunctional oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in an alkaline medium, outperforming other SACs and DACs. The ZnCoFe-N-C-based Zn-air battery exhibits a high specific capacity (liquid state: 931.8 Wh kg_Zn ^-1 ), power density (liquid state: 137.8 mW cm^-2 ; all-solid-state: 107.9 mW cm^-2 ), and good cycling stability. Furthermore, density-functional theory calculations rationalize the excellent performance by demonstrating that the ZnCoFe-N-C catalyst has upshifted d-band center that enhances the adsorption of the reaction intermediates.

Improved Electronic Structure from Spin-State Reconstruction of a Heteronuclear Fe-Co Diatomic Pair to Boost the Fenton-like Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are promising candidates for various catalytic reactions, including electrocatalysis, chemical synthesis, and environmental remediation. However, the high-activity origin and mechanism underlying intrinsic activity enhancement remain elusive, especially for the Fenton-like reaction. Herein, we systematically compared the catalytic performance of dual-atom FeCo-N/C with its single-atom counterparts by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for pollutant abatement. The unusual spin-state reconstruction on FeCo-N/C is demonstrated to effectively improve the electronic structure of Fe and Co in the d orbital and enhance the PMS activation efficiency. Accordingly, the dual-atom FeCo-N/C with an intermediate-spin state remarkably boosts the Fenton-like reaction by almost 1 order of magnitude compared with low-spin Co-N/C and high-spin Fe-N/C. Moreover, the established dual-atom-activated PMS system also exhibits excellent stability and robust resistance against harsh conditions. Combined theoretical calculations reveal that unlike unitary Co atom or Fe atom transferring electrons to the PMS molecule, the Fe atom of FeCo-N/C provides extra electrons to the neighboring Co atom and positively shifts the d band of the Co center, thereby optimizing the PMS adsorption and decomposition into a unique high-valent Fe^IV-O-Co^IV species via a low-energy barrier pathway. This work advances a conceptually novel mechanistic understanding of the enhanced catalytic activity of DACs in Fenton-like reactions and helps to expand the application of DACs in various catalytic reactions.

Atomically Dispersed Fe/N4 and Ni/N4 Sites on Separate-Sides of Porous Carbon Nanosheets with Janus Structure for Selective Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Dual single atoms catalysts have promising application in bifunctional electrocatalysis due to their synergistic effect. However, how to balance the competition between rate-limiting steps (RDSs) of reversible oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and fully expose the active centers by reasonable structure design remain enormous challenges. Herein, Fe/N₄ and Ni/N₄ sites separated on different sides of the carbon nanosheets with Janus structure (FeNi_jns /NC) is synthesized by layer-by-layer assembly method. Experiments and calculations reveal that the side of Fe/N₄ is beneficial to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the Ni/N₄ side is preferred to OER. Such Janus structure can take full advantage of two separate-sides of carbon nanosheets and balance the competition of RDSs during ORR and OER. FeNi_jns /NC possesses superior ORR and OER activity with ORR half-wave potential of 0.92 V and OER overpotential of 440 mV at J = 10 mA cm^-2 . Benefiting from the excellent bifunctional activities, FeNi_jns /NC assembled aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) demonstrates better maximum power density, and long-term stability (140 h) than Pt/C+RuO₂ catalyst. It also reveals superior flexibility and stability in solid-state ZAB. This work brings a novel perspective for rational design and understanding of the catalytic mechanisms of dual single atom catalysts.

Unravelling intrinsic descriptors based on a two-stage activity regulation of bimetallic 2D c-MOFs for CO2RR

The bimetallic 2D conductive MOFs of M₁Pc-M₂-O, possessing dual metal sites to realize flexible molecular-level structural modification, are brilliant catalysts for electrochemical CO₂ reduction. However, the bimetallic centers bring about the complex regulatory mechanism of catalytic activity and obscure principles for catalyst design. Herein, systematical theoretical investigation unravels intrinsic descriptors to design favorable M₁Pc-M₂-O catalysts based on the discovered coarse-fine two-stage activity regulation mechanism. The reaction site controls the M-COOH distance of the key intermediate and therefore affects the reaction kinetics for the first stage of coarse regulation. The other metal site influents the d-band center of the reaction site and thus constitutes the second stage of fine regulation. The coarse and fine regulation are related to the valence electrons (V), electronegativity (E), and bond length (L_M-N/O) between the metal and coordination atoms. The intrinsic descriptor ϕ = (4 × V_M1 × (E_M1 + E_N/O)/E_N/O + V_M2 × (E_M2 + E_N/O)/E_N/O) × L_M1-N/O (with a coefficient ratio of 4 : 1) was eventually established and correlated well with the reported experiments. On this basis, the favorable catalysts CoPc-Zn-O and CoPc-Co-O were located. The research results could contribute to the diversity of bimetallic 2D c-MOFs in CO₂RR.

Design strategy for high-performance bifunctional electrode materials with heterogeneous structures formed by hydrothermal sulfur etching

The synthesis of efficient, stable, and green multifunctional electrode materials is a long-standing challenge for modern society in the field of energy storage and conversion. To this end, we successfully synthesized five bimetallic precursor materials with excellent performance by hydrothermal reaction with the assistance of a high concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and then, sulfide etched the lamellar precursor materials among them to obtain the one-dimensional heterostructured samples. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the bimetal and the continuous electron/ion transport structure, the samples displayed excellent bifunctional activity in supercapacitor and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Regarding supercapacitors, the exceptional performance of 2817.2 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 was demonstrated, while the asymmetric supercapacitors made showed an extraordinary energy density of 150.2 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 618.5 W kg^-1 and outstanding cycling performance (94.74% capacity retention after 20,000 cycles at 10 A g^-1). Simultaneously, a wearable flexible electrode that can be wrapped around a finger was coated on a carbon cloth and was found to light up a 0.5-m-long strip of light. Moreover, it exhibited an ultralow oxygen reduction overpotential of 249 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. Hence, our work provides a facile strategy to modulate the synthesis of heterogeneous structured sulfides with a continuous electron/ion transport pathway, which possesses excellent oxygen reduction electrocatalytic performance while meeting superior supercapacitor performance. Such work provides an effective approach for the construction of multifunctional electrochemical energy materials.

Atomic-Level Interface Engineering for Boosting Oxygen Electrocatalysis Performance of Single-Atom Catalysts: From Metal Active Center to the First Coordination Sphere

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the core reactions of a series of advanced modern energy and conversion technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air cells. Among all kinds of oxygen electrocatalysts that have been reported, single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer great development potential because of their nearly 100% atomic utilization, unsaturated coordination environment, and tunable electronic structure. In recent years, numerous SACs with enriched active centers and asymmetric coordination have been successfully constructed by regulating their coordination environment and electronic structure, which has brought the development of atomic catalysts to a new level. This paper reviews the improvement of SACs brought by atom-level interface engineering. It starts with the introduction of advanced techniques for the characterizations of SACs. Subsequently, different design strategies that are applied to adjust the metal active center and first coordination sphere of SACs and then enhance their oxygen electrocatalysis performance are systematically illustrated. Finally, the future development of SACs toward ORR and OER is discussed and prospected.

Emerging single-atom iron catalysts for advanced catalytic systems

Due to the elusive structure-function relationship, traditional nanocatalysts always yield limited catalytic activity and selectivity, making them practically difficult to replace natural enzymes in wide industrial and biomedical applications. Accordingly, single-atom catalysts (SACs), defined as catalysts containing atomically dispersed active sites on a support material, strikingly show the highest atomic utilization and drastically boosted catalytic performances to functionally mimic or even outperform natural enzymes. The molecular characteristics of SACs (e.g., unique metal-support interactions and precisely located metal sites), especially single-atom iron catalysts (Fe-SACs) that have a similar catalytic structure to the catalytically active center of metalloprotease, enable the accurate identification of active centers in catalytic reactions, which afford ample opportunity for unraveling the structure-function relationship of Fe-SACs. In this review, we present an overview of the recent advances of support materials for anchoring an atomic dispersion of Fe. Subsequently, we highlight the structural designability of support materials as two sides of the same coin. Moreover, the applications described herein illustrate the utility of Fe-SACs in a broad scope of industrially and biologically important reactions. Finally, we present an outlook of the major challenges and opportunities remaining for the successful combination of single Fe atoms and catalysts.
