Insights into the sodium storage mechanism of Bi2Te3 nanosheets as superior anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Unveiling the Synergy of Architecture and Anion Vacancy on Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs for Fast and Stable Potassium Ion Storage

Large volume strain and slow kinetics are the main obstacles to the application of high-specific-capacity alloy-type metal tellurides in potassium-ion storage systems. Herein, Bi2Te3-x nanocrystals with abundant Te-vacancies embedded in nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs) are proposed to address these challenges. In particular, a hierarchical porous fiber structure can be achieved by the polyvinylpyrrolidone-etching method and is conducive to increasing the Te-vacancy concentration. The unique porous structure together with defect engineering modulates the potassium storage mechanism of Bi2Te3, suppresses structural distortion, and accelerates K+ diffusion capacity. The meticulously designed Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs electrode exhibits ultrastable cycling stability (over 3500 stable cycles at 1.0 A g-1 with a capacity degradation of only 0.01% per cycle) and outstanding rate capability (109.5 mAh g-1 at 2.0 A g-1). Furthermore, the systematic ex situ characterization confirms that the Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs electrode undergoes an "intercalation-conversion-step alloying" mechanism for potassium storage. Kinetic analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal the excellent pseudocapacitive performance, attractive K+ adsorption, and fast K+ diffusion ability of the Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs electrode, which is essential for fast potassium-ion storage. Impressively, the assembled Bi2Te3-x@NPCNFs//activated-carbon potassium-ion hybrid capacitors achieve considerable energy/power density (energy density up to 112 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 1000 W kg-1) and excellent cycling stability (1600 cycles at 10.0 A g-1), indicating their potential practical applications.

Nanoconfinement of ultra-small Bi2Te3 nanocrystals on reduced graphene oxide: a pathway to high-performance sodium-ion battery anodes

Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention owing to their intriguing physicochemical properties and wide-ranging potential applications arising from their distinctive layered structure and nanoscale size effects. However, synthesizing sub-100 nm ultra-small Bi2Te3 nanocrystals remains a formidable challenge. To date, there has been little investigation on the performance of these ultra-small Bi2Te3 nanocrystals in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). This study presents a general strategy for synthesizing ultra-small Bi2Te3 nanocrystals on reduced graphene oxide (Bi2Te3/rGO) through a nanoconfinement approach. First-principles calculations and electrochemical kinetic studies confirm that the ultra-small Bi2Te3/rGO composite material can effectively mitigate volumetric expansion, preserve electrode integrity, and enhance electron transfer, Na-ion adsorption, and diffusion capacity. As a result, the Bi2Te3/rGO electrode demonstrates a remarkable initial specific capacity of 521 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, showcasing outstanding rate behaviour and long-lasting cycle life exceeding 800 cycles at 1 A g-1 while preserving exceptional rate properties. The function of the battery is indicated by ex situ TEM and XPS findings, which propose a conventional dual mechanism involving conversion and alloying. This work paves the way for rapid advancements in Bi2Te3-based SIB anodes while contributing to our understanding of sodium ion storage mechanisms.

Theoretical prediction and characterization of novel two-dimensional ternary tetradymite compounds La2X2Y (X = I, Br, Cl; Y = Ge, Te) as anode materials for metal-ion batteries

Tetradymite compounds, such as Bi2Te3, crystallizing in rhombohedral structures have triggered tremendous research interest from the scientific community because of their intriguing properties. Herein, using the state-of-the-art first-principles calculations, we identify that La2X2Y (X = I, Br, Cl; Y = Ge, Te) nanosheets exhibit a ternary tetradymite-type structure with extraordinary electrical and electrochemical properties. It is first demonstrated that the layered La2X2Y compounds exhibit weak interlayer coupling with cleavage energies in the range of ∼0.28-0.38 J m-2, allowing the ready separation of monolayers that can be synthesized by mechanical exfoliation from their bulk counterparts. Next, we predict that La2X2Ge nanosheets exhibit a semiconducting nature, and upon physical realistic strain, a Dirac cone can be realized. These findings can be exploited in the transport properties. Furthermore, we comprehensively investigated the electrochemical properties of the predicted systems to evaluate their potential use in metal-ion (Li/Na) batteries. Our detailed analyses reveal that the Li (Na) adatoms are sufficiently mobile on the surface of the studied systems. For instance, the binding energy for the Li (Na) adatom on La2I2Ge is -2.24(-1.79) eV with a diffusion barrier of as small as ∼0.31(0.20) eV. Subsequently, the maximum theoretical specific capacity for Li (Na) reaches as high as 887(1064) mA h g-1, which can be attributed to a much higher storage capacity compared to previously identified 2D anode materials. These findings substantiate that the predicted nanosheets could be synthesized to explore their potential applications in future metal-ion batteries.

Bismuth Telluride Nanoplates Hierarchically Confined by Graphene and N-Doped C as Conversion-Alloying Anode Materials for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have broad application prospects in the field of electric energy storage systems because of its abundant K reserves, and similar "rocking chair" operating principle as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Aiming to the large volume expansion and sluggish dynamic behavior of anode materials for storing large sized K-ion, bismuth telluride (Bi2 Te3 ) nanoplates hierarchically encapsulated by reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) are constructed as anodes for PIBs. The resultant Bi2 Te3 @rGO@NC architecture features robust chemical bond of Bi─O─C, tightly physicochemical confinement effect, typical conductor property, and enhanced K-ion adsorption ability, thereby producing superior electrochemical kinetics and outstanding morphological and structural stability. It is visually elucidated via high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) that conversion-alloying dual-mechanism plays a significant role in K-ion storage, allowing 12 K-ion transport per formular unit employing Bi as redox site. Thus, the high first reversible specific capacity of 322.70 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 , great rate capability and cyclic stability can be achieved for Bi2 Te3 @rGO@NC. This work lays the foundation for an in-depth understanding of conversion-alloying mechanism in potassium-ion storage.

Combustion Activation Induced Solid-State Synthesis for N, B Co-Doped Carbon/Zinc Borate Anode with a Boosting of Sodium Storage Performance

Zinc borates have merits of low voltage polarization and suitable redox potential, but usually suffer from low rate capability and poor cycling life, as an emerging anode candidate for Na⁺ storage. Here, a new intercalator-guided synthesis strategy is reported to simultaneously improve rate capability and stabilize cycling life of N, B co-doped carbon/zinc borates (CBZG). The strategy relies on a uniform dispersion of precursors and simultaneously stimulated combustion activation and solid-state reactions capable of scalable preparation. The Na⁺ storage mechanism of CBZG is studied: 1) ex situ XRD and XPS demonstrate two-step reaction sequence of Na⁺ storage: Zn₆ O(OH)(BO₃ )₃ +Na⁺ +e^- ↔3ZnO+Zn₃ B₂ O₆ +NaBO₂ +0.5H₂ ①, Zn₃ B₂ O₆ +6Na⁺ +6e^- ↔3Zn+3Na₂ O+B₂ O₃ ②; reaction ① is irreversible in ether-based electrolyte while reversible in ester-based electrolyte. 2) Electrochemical kinetics reveal that ether-based electrolyte possesses faster Na⁺ storage than ester-based electrolyte. The composite demonstrates an excellent capacity of 437.4 mAh g^-1 in a half-cell, together with application potential in full cells (discharge capacity of 440.1 mAh g^-1 and stable cycle performance of 2000 cycles at 5 A g^-1 ). These studies will undoubtedly provide an avenue for developing novel synthetic methods of carbon-based borates and give new insights into the mechanism of Na⁺ storage in ether-based electrolyte for the desirable sodium storage.

One-pot facile synthesis of hexagonal Bi2Te3 nanosheets and its novel nanocomposites: Characterization, anticancer, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities

Bismuth Telluride (Bi₂Te₃) layered structure results in extraordinary features in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. However, Bi₂Te₃ synthesis with reliable stability and biocompatibility in biological systems was the major challenge that limited its biological application. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) or graphitic carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets were incorporated into Bi₂Te₃ matrix to improve exfoliation. Bi₂Te₃ nanoparticles (NPs) and its novel nanocomposites (NCs): CN@Bi₂Te₃ and CN-RGO@Bi₂Te₃ were solvothermally synthesized, physiochemically characterized and assessed for their anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. X-ray diffraction depicted Bi₂Te₃ rhombohedral lattice structure. Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectra confirmed NC formation. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed 13 nm thickness and 400-600 nm diameter of hexagonal, binary, and ternary nanosheets of Bi₂Te₃-NPs/NCs. Energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy revealed the presence of Bi, Te, and carbon atoms in the tested NPs with negatively charged surfaces as depicted by zeta sizer. CN-RGO@Bi₂Te₃-NC displayed the smallest nanodiameter (359.7 nm) with the highest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and antiproliferative activity against MCF-7, HepG2 and Caco-2. Bi₂Te₃-NPs had the greatest scavenging activity (96.13 ± 0.4%) compared to the NCs. The NPs inhibitory activity was greater against Gram-negative bacteria than that of Gram-positive bacteria. Integration of RGO and CN with Bi₂Te₃-NPs enhanced their physicochemical properties and therapeutic activities giving rise to their promising capacity for future biomedical applications.

Ga2Te3-Based Composite Anodes for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Recently, metal chalcogenides have received considerable attention as prospective anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high theoretical capacities based on their alloying or conversion reactions. Herein, we demonstrate a gallium(III) telluride (Ga₂Te₃)-based ternary composite (Ga₂Te₃-TiO₂-C) synthesized via a simple high-energy ball mill as a great candidate SIB anode material for the first time. The electrochemical performance, as well as the phase transition mechanism of Ga₂Te₃ during sodiation/desodiation, is investigated. Furthermore, the effect of C content on the performance of Ga₂Te₃-TiO₂-C is studied using various electrochemical analyses. As a result, Ga₂Te₃-TiO₂-C with an optimum carbon content of 10% (Ga₂Te₃-TiO₂-C(10%)) exhibited a specific capacity of 437 mAh·g^-1 after 300 cycles at 100 mA·g^-1 and a high-rate capability (capacity retention of 96% at 10 A·g^-1 relative to 0.1 A·g^-1). The good electrochemical properties of Ga₂Te₃-TiO₂-C(10%) benefited from the presence of the TiO₂-C hybrid buffering matrix, which improved the mechanical integrity and electrical conductivity of the electrode. This research opens a new direction for the improvement of high-performance advanced SIB anodes with a simple synthesis process.
