Triptycene-based diiron(II) mesocates: spin-crossover in solution

Triptycene-based diiron(II) and dizinc(II) mesocates were obtained using a novel rigid ligand with two pyridylbenzimidazole chelating units fused into the triptycene scaffold. Studies on the diiron(II) assembly in solution showed that the complex undergoes thermal-induced one-step spin-crossover with T1/2 at 243 K (Evans method).

Ultrafast Removal of Thorium and Uranium from Radioactive Waste and Groundwater Using Highly Efficient and Radiation-Resistant Functionalized Triptycene-Based Porous Organic Polymers

Thorium (Th) and uranium (U) are important strategic resources in nuclear energy-based heavy industries such as energy and defense sectors that also generate significant radioactive waste in the process. The management of nuclear waste is therefore of paramount importance. Contamination of groundwater/surface water by Th/U is increasing at an alarming rate in certain geographical locations. This necessitates the development of strategic adsorbent materials with improved performance for capturing Th/U species from radioactive waste and groundwater. This report describes the design of a unique, robust, and radiation-resistant porous organic polymer (POP: TP-POP-SO3NH4), which demonstrates ultrafast removal of Th(IV) (<30 s)/U(VI) (<60 s) species present in simulated radioactive wastewater/groundwater samples. Thermal, chemical, and radiation stabilities of these POPs were studied in detail. The synthesized ammoniated POP revealed exceptional capture efficiency for trace-level Th (<4 ppb) and U (<3 ppb) metal ions through the cation-exchange mechanism. TP-POP-SO3NH4 shows a significant sorption capacity [Th (787 mg/g) and U (854 mg/g)] with an exceptionally high distribution coefficient (Kd) of 107 mL/g for Th. This work also demonstrates a facile protocol to convert a nonperforming POP, by simple chemical modifications, into a superfast adsorbent for efficient uptake/removal of U/Th.

Homoconjugation and Tautomeric Isomerism in Triptycene-Fused Pyridylbenzimidazoles

The facile, metal-free synthesis and characterization of three new series of triptycene-fused pyridylbenzimidazoles are reported; such compounds possess an imidazole moiety fused within the benzene rings of the trypticene and a pyridine ring installed at position 2 of the imidazole rings. The position of the nitrogen atom of the pyridyl moiety linked to position 2 of the fused benzimidazole scaffold is systematically changed from the ortho to para position. The number of substituted blades bearing the pyridyl-substituted fused benzimidazole scaffolds has been increased from one to three. Such a library of compounds allowed us to evaluate the enhancement of two main effects: tautomeric isomerism and homoconjugation. The characteristic dynamic equilibrium between different isomers induced by prototropic tautomerization was examined by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. By comparison of the photophysical properties of the new compounds with those of classical planar pyridylbenzimidazoles, the presence of the homoconjugation effect between the different triptycene blades was demonstrated. Fine details of the electronic structure of the new derivatives were unraveled by a computational analysis. The novel compounds can be employed for the construction of intriguing self-assembled supramolecular architectures.

Palladium(II)-immobilized Triptycene based Hypercrosslinked Polymers: An Efficient, Green, and Reusable Heterogenous Catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-coupling Reaction

The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMCC) involves the coupling of organohalides and organoboron molecules in the presence of Pd(II)-based catalysts. Often SMCC reactions employ homogenous catalysts. However, such homogenous SMCC reactions are associated with certain limitations which has motivated design of effective and sustainable Pd(II)-based heterogeneous catalytic systems. Herein, we report a systematic development of a Pd(II)-immobilized and triptycene based ionic hyper crosslinked polymer (Pd@TP-iHCP) and explored its application as a heterogeneous catalyst for SMCC reaction. Pd@TP-iHCP has ample N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pendants that anchor Pd(II) centres on the polymeric matrix. Pd@TP-iHCP was characterized satisfactorily using FT-IR, 13 C CP-MAS NMR, BET surface area analysis, SEM, EDX and HRTEM. The performance of Pd@TP-iHCP as a heterogeneous catalyst for SMCC reactions was explored using various combinations of aryl boronic acids and aryl halides. Experimental results show that Pd@TP-iHCP is associated with a moderately high surface area. It is an efficient catalyst for SMCC (in aqueous media) with a modest loading of 0.8 mol % Pd(II)-catalyst since high yields of the expected products were obtained in shorter time intervals. Pd@TP-iHCP also features excellent stability and catalyst recyclability since it could be re-used for several cycles without any significant decrease in catalytic efficiency.

Fusing Triphenylbismuth and PnPh3 (Pn = P-Bi): Synthesis, Isolation, and Characterization of 9-Bisma-10-Pnictatriptycenes

The first series of 9-bisma-10-pnictatriptycenes Bi(C6H4)3Pn (2-Pn, Pn = P-Bi; see graphic) has been synthesized in a two-step procedure via suitable tris(2-bromophenyl)pnictanes 1-Pn and characterized in solution as well as in the solid state. DFT calculations suggest preferential interactions between 2-Pn and soft Lewis acids via the lighter pnictogen donor atom. Experimental studies demonstrate that even the weakest Lewis base in the series of 2-Pn, namely the dibismatriptycene 2-Bi, interacts with Lewis acidic [BiMe2(SbF6)] in solution. Analytical techniques include (VT-)NMR spectroscopy, DOSY NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations.

Activation of Solid-State Emission and Photostability through Molecular Confinement: The Case of Triptycene-Fused Quinacridone Dyes

We report the facile, metal-free convergent synthesis and the characterization of novel quinacridone dyes in which two triptycene units end-cap and sterically confine the quinacridone chromophore. A precise comparison of the confined dyes with their known homologues reveals that the reduction of π-π interactions in triptycene-fused quinacridone dyes compared to classical quinacridone results not only in an increase of solubility and processability but also in an enhancement of fluorescence quantum yield and photostability in the solid state.

Porous Triptycene Network Based on Tröger's Base for CO2 Capture and Iodine Enrichment

A three-dimensional rigid "six-connected" porous triptycene network based on Tröger's base (TB-PTN) was synthesized by using triptycenes as connectors and Tröger's base as linkers. With characteristics of a high surface area of 1528 m² g^-1, nitrogen-enriched groups, and superior thermal stability, TB-PTN displays a high CO₂ uptake of 22.3 wt % (273 K, 1 bar) and excellent iodine vapor adsorption (240 wt %).

Emulsion Assembly of Graphene Oxide/Polymer Composite Membranes

Graphene oxide/polymer composite water filtration membranes were developed via coalescence of graphene oxide (GO) stabilized Pickering emulsions around a porosity-generating polymer. Triptycene poly(ether ether sulfone)-CH₂NH₂:HCl polymer interacts with the GO at the water-oil interface, resulting in stable Pickering emulsions. When they are deposited and dried on polytetrafluoroethylene substrate, the emulsions fuse to form a continuous GO/polymer composite membrane. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that the intersheet spacing and thickness of the membranes increased with increasing polymer concentration, confirming the polymer as the spacer between the GO sheets. The water filtration capability of the composite membranes was tested by removing Rose Bengal from water, mimicking separations of weak black liquor waste. The composite membrane achieved 65% rejection and 2500 g m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1. With high polymer and GO loading, composite membranes give superior rejection and permeance performance when compared with a GO membrane. This methodology for fabrication membranes via GO/polymer Pickering emulsions produces membranes with a homogeneous morphology and robust chemical separation strength.

Rationally Designed Ionic Covalent Organic Networks (iCONs) with Efficient Antimicrobial Activities

Two unique ionic covalent organic networks (iCONs) incorporated with guanidinium motifs were obtained and characterized by various techniques. Upon 8 h of treatment with iCON-HCCP (250 μg/mL), >97% killing of Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata strains was observed. Antimicrobial efficacies against bacteria and fungi were also evident from FE-SEM studies. High antifungal efficacies also correlated well with >60% reduction of ergosterol content, high lipid peroxidation, and membrane damage leading to necrosis.

A three dimensional graphdiyne-like porous triptycene network for gas adsorption and separation

Graphdiyne, an emerging carbon allotrope, has attracted many researchers devoted to the study of its synthesis and application. The utilization of graphdiyne in gas adsorption and separation has been predicted by computer simulation with many examples. In this work, the triangular basic unit of graphdiyne was introduced into a triptycene-based porous organic polymer to obtain a three dimensional graphdiyne-like porous triptycene network named G-PTN. With high surface area and a microporous structure, G-PTN exhibited convincing application potential for the storage of gas molecules, especially for the selective adsorption of acetylene over ethylene. Computational simulation proved the importance of the triptycene units and three dimensional structure to the selectivity, as well as the potential of graphdiyne units as selective binding sites, suggesting that through judicious design, new three-dimensional porous graphdiyne could be acquired with better gas adsorption and separation performance.

Triple-stranded triptycene-based metallo-supramolecular helicate displaying efficient encapsulation of bulky guest molecules

Triple-stranded metallo-supramolecular helicates were readily constructed by achieving a coordination of the gallium(iii) cation by ligands based on 2,7- and 2,6-disubstituted triptycenes. The significance of these building blocks in the construction of helicates with the capability for guest encapsulation was also revealed.
